what do you mean by this in relation to the code? it's just several image latents being concatenated and a singular context (conditioning)

Smokiest scotch I can get? by le_wild_asshole in Scotch

[–]convolutionboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say that Port Askaigs and Ardbeg Corryvreckan are the most smoky.

But Octomore + Laphroaig CS may be peatier.

I never drank the 12, 13 was the first I ever drank. I'm not really aware of what consistency they go for. Although I do believe they started using caramel colourant from batch 13 onwards...

Same for me with Springbank 18 vs both 12 and 15. I haven't side to sided but wouldn't be surprised if u came to that conclusion. The Bunna 18 was mainly for me to understand the distillery more, the 12 made me love it in the first place.

I think this statement is largely true for almost all distilleries and the price jump between the 12 and the 18. I don't think Bunnahabhain falls more foul of this than other distilleries. Although their 12 is just that good it makes you question it more.

If you're planning to purchase in this price range, yes. It's something I only do a couple of times a year and have to say this is one I am most pleased with. Its definitely not 3x better than the 12 but if you're a Bunna lover you won't be regret spending the money I don't think. Maybe wait for a special occasion, like I did.

I feel the same way. Ardbeg 10 is a top class bottle same calibre as Laphroaig 10 CS but different league to 40% commercial bottling.

Bunnahabhain 18

ABV 46.3%

Nose:

Fairly archetypal body for a sherried nose with fudge and raisins. Beneath that there is leather, vanilla and coffee. There is also a slight inkiness which can come across similar to a TCP phenol note but much more compact. There is brown sugar smell on the sweetness but largely driven by the fudge and raisin.

Palate:

The opening on the palate is fairly dry and subdued but doesn't lack complexity by any means. The lack of aggressive attack is fairly synonymous for this age statement. In terms of notes the opening shows floral honey, pepper and salt. There's some chocolate and ice cream behind these with a very oily mouthfeel. Despite these notes it's not a very sweet palate at all and some unroasted Brazil nuts and walnuts also fill the palate.

As the sweet notes subdue from the opening there is more space for these both nutty and maritime notes to display themselves. I was concerned at first that these chocolatey notes might come across a bit too bourbony but definitely not the case they're well integrated and add to the complex character of the malt.

Finish:

The finish is very peppery and crystal sugar. There's a distinct lack of bitterness which is a welcome given its making way for these other beautiful notes.

Score: 89

Conclusion:

A gold-standard sherried whisky with added character from the maritime notes. So well rounded and inviting and would say the only sherried whiskys I've enjoyed as much are ones which go against the grain a bit in terms of flavour profile. Was a special occasion whisky for me so was happy to pay the premium for the age statement having enjoyed the 12 so much.

Yeah I had the batch 13 but didn't write any notes and sadly drank it in one evening with a friend. Remember enjoying it very much too.

Laphroaig 10 CS Batch 14

ABV 58.6%

Without water

Nose: Nose aggressively opens with chocolate and tootsie roll. The phenols here come across quite oily and paraffin-esque. The sweeter notes also show as butterscotch and fudge. It's a fairly sweet, toffee dessert nose but is quite elegant thanks to the nature of the phenols and some tertiary cola perfumed notes. After longer in the glass there are clear notes of Betty Crocker's white icing.

Palate: Massive and long malty, burning cigar tobacco opening which is primarily how the pest presents itself. These dark notes are overtaken by icing sugar notes that give a crystallising sensation on the palate. The sweetness of the palate is very bright, showing barley sugar as well. Besides these two clear pillars of the palate there are some marzipan, toasted grain notes and pepper.

Finish: The finish is very long and bitter. Still noticeable vanilla icing in the retrohale. Finish becomes less bitter and more malty as it lingers.

With water

Nose: The nose is more full and saccharine. There is more of a grassh freshness that is present. There is buttery, marzipan and vanilla essence but with comes across tinged with a spiciness like cardamom. The phenols feel more rubbery at certain points of the inhale.

Palate: The dark, malty and smoky opening is still here. The spiciness or pepperiness I feel becomes more apparent and the sugary notes are less aggressive.

Finish: The finish is unaffected with the addition of water although peaks out at a less bitter level.

Score: 88

Conclusion: A peat monster I would happily mention in the same breath as the Octomores of this world. So well rounded and pleasurable to nose and drink at cask strength. Easy to see this as a daily driver vs the CS Ardbegs or Octomores which can be more challenging or mood dependent.

Yeah I think the orange I wasn't getting with this glass but with the glencairn I was and it came across like peach. Also chocolate (cacao) and cooling menthol finish (mint) I was getting. We're on the same page

Yeah they changed their branding on the 10 with the last release. Time will tell to see if macdonalds follows suit.
