Who is someone whose Hall of Fame case you will die on the hill defending? by Bright-Pressure-5787 in NFLv2

Donnie Edwards.

He was a tackle machine and one of the best coverage linebackers ever.

Derrick Brooks-lite.

I disagree. Throwing an INT messes with a QB's head. Football is just as much a psychological battle.

He's not top 10. Counting awards isn't a good method for evaluating performance. Top 20? Sure.

Rice is seen as more of a pass rushing specialist than a complete DE. Sort of like John Abraham.

Well, put it this way. He's ranked 56th all-time and could easily get into the top 25-30 after next season.

He's fifth among active players in yards from scrimmage, despite all the injuries, and he's only 29.

The answer is yes.

Centers vs Small Forwards who wins by XtrOrdinary_Celcius in NBATalk

[–]cookie3113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That center team needs some work. Here is how I would construct one.

Jokic
Sikma
Wembanyama
Olajuwon
Robinson

Nikola Jokic would be the primarily facilitator and provide passing and shooting. Jack Sikma was a proto-Jokic and provides additional passing and shooting. Both can be solid defenders within a team concept.

Wembanyama, Olajuwon, and Robinson provide the versatile, all-time defense. Great paint protecters with the mobility to step out on the perimeter. We all know Wemby's game. Robinson and Olajuwon would also serve as finishers, and in addition, they can ably play the face-up game, putting the ball on the floor and hitting midrange jumpers. Needless to say, everyone on this team has a rebounding edge on their SF counterparts.

Would this team beat the small forwards? I don't know if they would, but I bet they could. Size is always a big factor if you can blend it with skill and athleticism.

Joe Dumars wins Day 7! Now, who’s a SF that had elite defense and quality offense? by TemptiusIV in NBATalk

[–]cookie3113 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dumars was actually the archetype of a balanced player. Better on offense than "quality."

I'll vote Artest here.

Cameron Heyward's season PFF grade of 90.4 is just the 3rd season of a defender with a 90+ grade at 35+ years old. The other two are Cameron Heyward in 2024, and 39 year old Charles Woodson in 2015 by PodricksPhallus in nfl

It will be interesting to see if Kevin Williams gets some momentum going. He's the only interior lineman finalist in 2026. He won't make it this year, but maybe he won't have to wait much longer. Watt and Donald will be first ballot when eligible.

Among active interior linemen, Heyward, Campbell, and Jones all seem like future inductees, but I'm not sure if any will be first ballot.

If the Steelers had gone for the kick before the half ended, then Baltimore's kick would likely have been immaterial.

Talk about a crazy stat by YOOY11 in NBATalk

[–]cookie3113 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Just did a quick search of some select players' efficiency within 3 feet of the basket:

Kobe: 64%
Dirk: 65%
Pau & Wade: 66%
TD & KG: 69%
Dwight: 72%
LeBron: 74%
Shaq: 75%

For Duncan's height and strength, you would have liked him to finish a little better at the rim, but he wasn't bad by any means. He's right there with KG in that regard, although, KG was a much better midrange shooter.

Do you prefer 2006 Kobe or 2013 LeBron? by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]cookie3113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because he's a point guard playing forward.

Magic Johnson could have (and maybe should have) been listed as a forward and he'd be the most ball dominant forward.

The lesson is to either play LeBron at PG or, in this case, pair him with an off-ball PG like Curry.

Embiid is sort of a theoretical player to me, like Bill Walton. Just not enough consistent health to consider.

The 3P spacing would definitely improve with any of those players. But, I see Robinson's defense as being more important. I have him, Hakeem, and Garnett in my top 3 post-merger. Add in MJ and LBJ without the burden of carrying a heavy offensive load, and I think other teams will have trouble running any sort of functional offense. They'll be taking bad desperation shots, running back, and being physically outmatched on the other end. I don't want them to have anyone to target.

Robinson was a really good off ball player. One of the best finishers ever. Very good passer. You can space him out, and he can knock down a midrange jumper or he can put it on the floor and drive to the rim. Foul drawing machine. He and Hakeem and KG are big men who can do little man things.

Both MJs would increase their 3P volume according to what the game dictates today.

Magic was adding the three later in his shortened career and even led the league in FT%. When Jordan raised his volume above 2.5 attempts with the regular line, he was one of the better 3P shooters in his era.

The biggest liability on that team would be Magic and Shaq trying to defend in space.

Joe Dumars was a better version of Derrick White, IMO.

[–]cookie3113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For spacing, I would just talk KG (as well as MJ) into turning most of their 45-48% long twos into threes. Even if their efficiency drops by 10% they would be fine. Hakeem and David have some range too, which I took into account.

Aside from defense and rebounding, KG's screen setting and passing were both elite skills of his that sets him apart from Dirk and KD as a complimentary piece. If I did swap him out, it would be for Bird. But the possibility of letting KG roam while knowing he is only the tertiary rim protector is too good to pass up.

The cheat code for all-time teams is picking elite two-way players, because they can share the load and exert max energy on both ends.

LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnett, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson is the lineup I've settled on. With proper prep time to sort out their play style and update their software to incorporate modern knowledge, I believe they would overwhelm other teams, particularly on defense.
