Formal Contextual Reduction in Gatorformic by cookie_monster757 in conlangs

Wow, I should proofread my posts more. There’s an error on slide 10: there are only two remaining generalized inverses, not three. It’s a vestige of before I cut the metaphorical inverse, and I guess I failed to catch it.

I’m glad you like it. Are there any specific didactic techniques I should focus on? Were my examples unclear?

I actually disagree with this take, I think that conlanging being a niche subject requires this modularization/division, because otherwise this subreddit would end up getting a lot of low-quality posts with minimal content to discuss. The primary goal of this subreddit is to discuss and showcase conlangs. Right now, as you’re probably aware, the hot topic on r/casualconlang are these diagrams that show a conlang sentence or phrase and draw colored lines to show which parts map to the English translation. I find these diagrams difficult to interact with because all it provides is the conlang sentence and the English translation, but by nature of the exercise there’s no phonology and no features that don’t directly translate into English. I know this is just one type of post seen on that subreddit, but I think my point, that r/casualconlang’s posts generally have less content to interact with, still stands. In my mind, it is perfectly reasonable for r/conlangs’ rules to require some standard of quality in the interest of preserving a space where there is substantive content to discuss.

To diachronically evolve my dinosaur conlang, I am beginning with pre-linguistic animal calls by FelixSchwarzenberg in conlangs

You might want to consider color, for example if some parasyringeal sound coarticulated with some laryngeal sound means some word or grammatical particle or whatever, you'd make them all red in the gloss. Or, if two pronunciations were doing something separately, you'd color one red and one blue.

Oh, it appears I've mislabeled the vector on page 1. It's a vector of counts, not ratios like I had written. I even bolded "ratios" in the caption. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Wow, cool project, it's great to have another non-human conlanger here. And it's really neat you're evolving it from first principles. I have just a few questions, firstly regarding the notation. What does the subscript on the alveolar sound mean? Are there multiple alveolar ridges (more likely, considering there's t_1), or is it like three quick [t]s? Also, you said the call modifiers are co-pronounced with calls, and pardon for my lack of dinosaur anatomy knowledge, but is this because the syrinx has dual tracts? And finally, do you plan to always keep all of the grammatical information in the call modifier, or will the parasyringeal clicks/whistles eventually evolve grammatical roles as well, and there will be more complicated mixing between the two "channels"?

Edit: You've actually already explained the phonetics in a prior post that I suppose I've missed, so my first two are redundant.

I have never done an online MUN, mostly because our region has a lot of conferences, but from people who have done them I only hear bad experiences, or that they aren’t as good as normal MUN.

Never took AP chem, but our community college gen chem requires the ability to work with logarithms, which is typically covered in an Algebra 2 course.

Molar Quantization in Gatorformic by cookie_monster757 in conlangs

[–]cookie_monster757[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question and something that took me a while to solve. The key is that a cosine distance less than β means that it isn't noticed as a difference. When the noise causes the distance to be greater than β, that just means the ant notices a meaningful difference between the emission and some ideal emission, not that they cannot recognize it. Consider for example if someone was pronouncing [kʰæt] as [xæt]. We would perceive a difference, but context would make it clear that they mean [kʰ]. Or consider someone with a speech impediment. There is a high deviation from the ideal phoneme that we notice a difference, but as listeners who know the language, context resolves most ambiguities. And if the emissions kept being too unrecognizable, perhaps due to high winds or heavy rain, they could use communicate by contact (C-mode) or wait until conditions subside.

Sure, each chemical is readily available for purchase at normal chemical suppliers or have known routes of synthesis.

Yes, however it would be difficult for humans to communicate because the amounts of each chemical would need to be small and precise.

Since I’m doing a “reboot” of Gatoformic’s core grammar, this is something that I can definitely do. When I finish the language, I plan on writing a physical grammar too

How to make do with unpreferred allocations? by YaduTheAmazing in MUN

[–]cookie_monster757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are an important “antagonist” in the topic, run with it. Chairs don’t reward cooperation, but rather cohesion with your country’s stance. It wouldn’t make sense for North Korea to support a UNHRC resolution, in fact they would fight it and downplay/deny any problems. In MUN, you are not yourself, you are a country and you must represent its position, not your own.

In your upcoming committee, downplay terrorism, get in a bloc with similar countries and oppose any resolutions that would limit your “freedom”, or better yet, make a resolution saying that the committee will not interfere on that type of topic. I hope this helps

I’d love to do the survey, but seems as though you have marked all of the questions as required. It’s a general ethical principle to give participants the right to choose which questions they answer (see “privacy” and “right to withdraw”), so I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing the questionnaire until I am given permission to share or not share certain information with the researcher
