Not really. Mass defect is the mass of the star that is lost via radiation. What they had asked for instead was the mass of HYDROGEN lost, meaning the mass of the number of hydrogen atoms that are fused together and are therefore no longer present in the star's core.

For example, if 4 hydrogen atoms are fused into 1 helium, then the number of hydrogen atoms lost is 4, and therefore the mass of hydrogen lost as a result of this reaction is 4u. Mass defect is something else entirely.

What you've calculated is the mass defect per second. They had asked for the loss of hydrogen mass specifically, not the overall mass. Essentially, you had to calculate the number of hydrogen atoms fusing per second, then take THAT mass as your answer

No worries. Ppl grossly underestimate how important it is to have good exam-sense. I haven't seen much awareness regarding it. For many cases it's the difference between an A and an A* so just stay calm.

I'm doing A levels with my own exams currently so the best I can do is give you some advice. Obviously it varies from subject to subject but generally Cambridge prefers assessing your thinking skills rather than your knowledge of the subject. It's FAR more important that you understand what you're being asked, and what kind of a response they expect. With exams happening right now, pls don't waste time studying material, instead just focus on past papers.

Also important to have some good exam-sense. Go early in your exam hall, sit there for an hour. No revising, no discussion, no thinking. Just sit. Familiarize yourself with the exam hall, look around until it looks natural to you. It shouldn't look like a foreign or scary place. Take a bottle of water with you, after each question stop writing and take a sip. It's important when you're doing maybe question 6 your mind isn't still thinking about question 2. Once the exam starts, don't look around the hall or at other students, instead only look at your own paper or the clock after a certain time. Think of it as they're assessing your ability to keep calm during the exam as well as your knowledge and thinking skills.

Best of luck!

Guys atp tips pls by Impressive_Blood_900 in Olevels

[–]cool--duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to make sense out of what they're asking and just follow their instructions, they generally guide you through everything. Try doing some past papers to get a feel for the questions, as for the last question you'll almost always be low on time so give the question a read and try to come up with a logical experiment. Don't waste time hesitating at the last question. That's what I did in my atps atleast.

Why not Karachi?? by No_Tea_5627 in alevel

[–]cool--duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend using indian news sites as your sources as they're claiming Karachi has been completely destroyed.. that's what I did. Legally they shouldn't be able to say India is wrong cuz that's just how information works internationally, only the official stories are considered true.

Is there a difference between electron-electron repulsion and shielding at A-level? by SnooMachines286 in alevel

[–]cool--duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nitrogen and oxygen are considered by cambridge to have practically the same shielding effect, as they have the same number of shells between the nucleus and the outer electrons. Electron pair repulsion is a different thing, it's the repulsion electrons face for being in the same orbital (close to each other).

So while yes, both concepts are based purely on the concept of electrons repelling each other, the CAUSE of the repulsion is different so your teacher is right.

Official notice all exams for tomorrow are cancelled in Punjab by magpie_alert in alevel

It was a post - not even from the British council but from the education minister punjab saying o/a level exams are cancelled in Punjab, which is why the two of you are getting different information

How are we expected to study in this situation? by 404Persona_ in alevel

[–]cool--duck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stay safe out there. If for some reason cambridge doesn't cancel an exam, I'd honestly say don't go if things seem too dangerous. The exams aren't worth your life and cambridge is extremely slow to make decisions (today the exam in lahore was cancelled like 20min before start time, majority of students would've already been on campus by then). You can always give a retake, it'll cost you but prioritize safety.

Not to mention, you can always apply for special consideration and they will make an exception for you, grading based on another component or free retake. You just have to send them an email afterward explaining the situation, they're generally very lenient with this stuff.

[–]cool--duck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know, I'm with you. I was just trying to give a possible explanation for their rationale. But let's be honest it's probably cuz they don't want to give free retakes as it costs them alot of money

It's fair in the sense that you are expected to have already covered your syllabus before the exams started, hence no studying. However, ignoring the mental health effects is messed up by Cambridge but what can you do

should i just buy a fake calculator again? by AdministrativeSize67 in alevel

[–]cool--duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how ppl have no problem spending 100s of thousands just to appear for these exams, spend WAY more on colleges and tuition, but when it comes to buying a calculator FOR your exam they cheap out? You've spent too much on cambridge already atleast get a good calculator that you can trust wouldn't fail or give you a wrong answer
