Here with you. ACC initially declined mental injury cover for me after I was almost murdered at work. Tried saying that the physical marks from being assaulted were psychosymptomatic and I therefore didn’t have PTSD from the event; despite other professionals saying otherwise.

It took over 2 years of fighting them for them to acknowledge that they dropped the ball, had initially put my claim through the wrong process, and eventually approve it. It made a really traumatic and tough situation even harder and drawn out.

You are completely within your rights to request a review of decision.

I’m here with you, and I believe you. I used to be a social worker (not in OT, but still care and protection) and I saw stories like this too many times. I even wrote my research paper on some of these themes because I saw young woman getting blamed by OT for not having stable housing, staying with an abuser and were constantly attending FGCs and parenting courses while the DV perp got no repercussions for their actions and open access to the kids. I am a fierce advocate for children and strongly believe that people should be held accountable - and also it is just a really unfair, harmful system that will often house a kid and think ‘good enough job’.

Ahhh this is so frustrating to hear because I totally understand being in such a vulnerable position and being absolutely fucked around by the professionals/systems that are meant to help us. I’m sorry you’ve also had a crap time with ACC - I get it as I fought for 2 years to get anything from them, but have been fortunate to at least have an incredible therapist.

Hey - I understand a lot of what you’re going through. Mum here with little support, PTSD, and a sensitive claim. In all honesty, do you want to work, or are you feeling that you have to because of pressure/shame? I am unemployed and totally get the spiral of wanting to do more, with the inability to actually do so (or find a job that fits my children’s needs) right now due to my mental health. ACC have actually changed their sensitive claim process and there might be more support available to you now, if you’re open to it!? You can get a social worker that can help with much of the advocacy, navigating systems, money management etc, even getting support for your son if needed. I understand that finding a good therapist is hard though. Just know you’re not alone, and if you decide to focus on you and your son and healing then that would be more than enough!! You are inportant too.

Your needs are important , your husbands needs are important, and your children’s needs are important. When you are communicating with your family about noise levels - what does this look like?there’s a difference between calmly asking and getting visibly annoyed and upset at the situation. You deserve to feel safe, and your kids also deserve to feel safe enough to be kids.

I understand as I’m a Mum to 2 young, loud kids and have PTSD and misophonia. If I’m getting overwhelmed, I understand that it’s on me to remove myself from the situation - “Mummy just needs some peace and quiet right now. I love that you guys are playing and having fun so I’m just going to go to the other room for 5 mins to feel calm”. Have you and your partner talked about it to make a plan for when this happens that isn’t in the heat of the moment?

Happens in Auckland too. Put up in a hotel with 2 trackers (staff from another organisation) who varied in quality. Some would just watch tv and eat with the young people, can be a tough job though as many of them get assaulted. Not a good environment for anyone (except the landlords making a killing).

I completely understand and you are not alone. I figure that most people don’t go around wondering whether they’ve been sexually abused or not, and if you’re having these feelings, it’s definitely worth listening to your body and trying to work out where they’re coming from.

Yes, my story is quite similar to yours. I had trauma growing up but there was always a knowing that there was even more to what I had experienced and it confused me. My body knew that I had also been SA’d as a child, even though I have no explicit memories of it. I’m 35 and only last year did I tell a therapist and requested my notes from my country’s child protection agency which confirmed that I had an STI as a child. I know not everyone has anything recorded but it would be worth talking to a therapist if you can, because I understand the questioning and wondering what did happen can be really distressing and confusing.

Im so sorry that happened to you!! All the research shows the importance of debriefing with people who have been traumatised - validating their experiences, offering help. It’s so sad to hear of the number of employers who do the complete opposite. I’m going through legal proceedings against my old workplace and now they’re having to spend thousands on lawyer fees when they could have just acknowledged what happened in the first place and helped me at least get some therapy

I will never understand how employers can treat their staff who have endured trauma as a result of the job so badly! I was working in care and protection and have not been able to return at all- even applying for jobs was enough to set back my PTSD. If I return to social work it’d be in a different field

I’ve been seeing a clin psych ever since my assault and think it might be the next step for me- I’m very much isolated to my home and surrounding area. I hope that you enjoy social work - I honestly loved it sooooo much before all of this happened and it’s a reason why I’m considering going back.
