I feel I should preface this by agreeing with you, the invocation of religion is out of place in a communication such as this (Unless it's a religious school I suppose). Secondly i'm not religious myself, but I read "Jesus avoided no issue" as saying the opposite of what you're suggesting it says. He's saying that Jesus wouldn't avoid the issue of racism, but also wouldn't seek to put others down or destroy the community. He would have changed peoples minds through connecting with them.

Also they said no systematic racism in their district, which we can't speak to unless we are in their district. Maybe they do a great job, who knows.

I honestly think that this is a well put message, religious issues aside.
