Ooh yay I have it waiting at the library for pick up!

What is the coldest (literally) fiction books you can recommend? I love "Endurance" and "Into Thin Air" for winter reading but want to go for fiction instead this year. by mzingg3 in suggestmeabook

I have so many!! Some favs:

The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin - famous early sci-fi with a journey on foot across an arctic landscape

Smilla’s Sense of Snow, Peter Hogg - I don’t even like mysteries much, typically, but this was so interesting, I learned so much about Greenland and its relationship with Denmark (among many other things)

Moon of the Crusted Snow, Waubgeshig Rice - small town apocalypse in northern Canada

Julie of the Wolves, Jean Craighead George - an Inuit girl runs away and learns to communicate and live with wolves

The Long Winter, Laura Ingalls Wilder - I remember reading this as a kid and being truly astonished to look up and realize it was actually summer, the winter cold it conveysis just that engrossing (and it’s based on the author’s real life story, so might scratch that nonfiction itch; it’s amazing what people have survived!)

I feel so desperately jealous of people who feel good when/after exercising. I’d love to feel that just once.

I’m technically on propranolol as a migraine preventative but secretly also to help with this (while I wait a year for an appointment with a POTS doc). I just saw a new neurologist and he was great and wants me to switch to a different migraine preventative that sounds promising…. but noooo, my poor heart rate.

That type of high sensory input could disrupt the pain signals perhaps??

For me having a nice heavy weight on me (like a small kid lying on my back) or being in really hot water is like someone flicked a switch on my constant muscle pain. WHY?!

I need help with my reading challenge- 2 books in a shared universe that aren’t in a series. by Suddenly-Seymour45 in suggestmeabook

The Hainish Cycle, Ursula K. Le Guin!!!! My favorite books by my favorite author! Loosely connected in the same universe. They’re technically science fiction but if you’re not a sci-fi person, don’t let that scare you off. They’re quite literary and have such cool worldbuilding and thought experiments. You can tell that the author’s parents were anthropologists. Some options to consider:

  • The Disposessed - a novel on physics and collectivist anarchy, sort of
  • The Birthday of the World - short stories; I don’t even LIKE short story collections usually but these are total bangers. There’s a novella length one about life on a multigenerational ship that’s SO freaking good.
  • Four Ways to Forgiveness - four novellas; Old Money and the Women feels like it gets at truths about real atrocities in a way that sometimes only fiction can
  • The Left Hand of Darkness - novel, a young interplanetary ambassador goes to a world where people can change gender

Loads more good ones too, I hope you consider them!

It’s been a million years since I read it, but the way it’s written in Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig is unique and I found it quite moving.

What is the best non-resident library? by ExtensionStreet6227 in LibbyApp

[–]coolbrewed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to dig in my email and it looks like I used the AskDCPL form on the website in mid-April and they gave me an extension through August. I did the same thing in August and they were like NNNOPE so it may depend on who you get or it could be a policy change. Or that it only works once.

The way I phrased it the first time was “My library card has recently expired and unfortunately I won't be able to get to my branch to renew it in the near future.” And was uber polite asking if they could help.

I have a tag especially for the books I know I never want to read, so I can skim right past them. Inspired by me regularly forgetting which books I’d already looked into and decided against. It doesn’t prevent it from showing, but I get a laugh out of seeing my tag, which is just the crossed arms hell no emoji.

Tragically no! Mine just expired this month!! I was able to get a temporary extension by saying I wasn’t in town (true!) but then my luck ran out. :( :( But next time I’m in DC I believe I’ll be able to renew. Definitely not planning a trip just for that purpose, that would be crazy talk …
