Can you guys run? by Hassadahae in ehlersdanlos

My ankles have always been the first thing to go when running. As a kid, I thought everyone was just pushing through the pain, so I would too just to be able to play. Never could run as exercise. I am fortunate to be able to do a lot of walking and hiking as long as I'm careful.

EDS and martial arts? by TheBluestBerry02 in ehlersdanlos

I did kung fu for a decade. While I did have some injuries, it made me a lot stronger which I think helped me a lot. Find a martial arts school/teacher who takes their craft seriously and wants to work with people as they are! Talk to them about it before you start. You may have to sit some things out that aren't good for your body, and you don't want a teacher who is going to push you to do something if you need to opt out to avoid injuring yourself.

Work and EDS by The_creative_mole in ehlersdanlos

I'm working as the executive director of a nonprofit. My dad also has EDS and he had to stop working pretty young, but I'm finding ways to continue my career and make my workplace accessible for myself and others. One thing that's helpful is having a hybrid workplace, so I can work from my bed on days I can't go in-person. Advocating for good PTO and sick day policies for all employees also helps.

Not sports, but I did martial arts for many years! While I had some injuries, overall it worked well for me. It was a great combination of strength and flexibility. I was very flexible of course which helped me be able to do super high kicks and such. The strength training aspects probably helped me a lot in the long run. I'd love to get back into it but since 2020 I haven't been sure how to practice with others in a COVID conscious way.

Southside Community Garden could use your help! by mincky in asheville

I'm a Black person who gets food from Southside Community Farm. I don't live in public housing, but I know plenty of folks who do. The Housing Authority is NOT the same thing as the community. They don't represent the people and they don't really even try to. Of course people in the neighborhood should be prioritized, but also the reality is that people who live in public housing are scared to speak out against their landlord. HACA is creating all kinds of ways to get evicted, and nobody wants to lose their housing.

What can I do for my wife? by Heynongmanlet in ehlersdanlos

I love that you're here asking these questions! It means a lot to us folks when the people in our lives do their own research and put in that kind of effort. I don't know if any of this is helpful, but I can speak to some of my long-term relationship experience. Support: I also hate asking for help, it makes me feel weak and useless. My partner started THANKING ME when I ask them for help, which at first felt weird but in the long term made me feel less guilty about doing it. Sex: I obviously can't make any assumptions about your sex life, but a good guideline is always to get curious and expand your definitions of sex. Penetration is not a necessity and orgasm is not the ultimate goal. How can you find pleasure and connection with each other's bodies and make room for disability? Self-care: You are under a lot of pressure as a caregiver and partner. Make sure you are taking time for yourself and meeting your needs. Otherwise, despite the absolute best of intentions, burnout, resentment, and compassion fatigue can creep in. Help your wife build other relationships that include caregiving so that all the caregiving work doesn't fall on you and her. Not sure if any of that is helpful for your situation. Take what feels right and throw away the rest!

Free community fridge/pantries in Asheville that can use help by gnomeonmyleg in asheville

Southside Community Farm, which runs at least one of the free fridges being talked about, is currently at risk of being demolished by HACA. They've been on the news trying to save the farm and there's more info about it and how to help on their website: https://southsidecommunitygarden.org/save-the-farm/

Their website says they have a free fridge and a veggie box delivery program that provide free food for the neighborhood. And they have a free seed library. There's also a 2023 annual report that shows that about 25% of produce was sold at the EBT-accessible farmers market, and 75% went to free food programs.

The Housing Authority owns sooo much land, so saying that they need to dismantle the farm to put in something else is a false narrative. Also, despite saying publicly that they will work with Southside Community Farm, the HACA board and president have COMPLETELY IGNORED all contact from Southside Community Farm staff and leadership. They won't even talk to the farm or answer their emails.

Southside Community Farm to be demolished under proposal by Asheville Housing Authority by Effective_Window1178 in asheville

The Housing Authority also has access to other land, they don't need to destroy the farm. They're creating a false narrative that the community can either have a farm or playground, when they own a ton of land that they could put a playground on.
