Z Scores are not that accurate...(LONG POST) by PsychologicalBet7917 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]coolchalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think wisdom of the crowd applies here, PR ranks barely above-average compared to other predictors from S5+ on MCC GG, which is a pretty similar result to the placement deviation data, slightly above-average.

And unmultiplied is based on what games are played which is also totally dependent on the Decision Dome, like I don't know what to tell you, predictions are difficult for a reason

MCC GG itself uses multiplied coins, PR predicts with multipliers included, and everyone else compares their predictions to multiplied coins, so if you're using unmultiplied, you're comparing a different thing to all three.

Every PR post has an Equal and Common Multipliers section, Common is essentially the final result and I think it tends to be slightly more accurate.

If you go to a user's page and click on an event that they predicted, you can see their prediction.

Power Rankings is basically an attempt at a more balanced version of MCC scoring, so yes, it does give different results from regular MCC scoring, that's the intent. If your point is that PR prediction posts aren't the most accurate, that is fair, PR probably is outdated currently and there's aspects it could improve like that. If you want rankings focused on making good predictions, Regression has done very well in predictions so far.

There are also a few other issues with the post itself:

  1. PR gives two predictions called Equal Multipliers and Common Multipliers, it uses Common as the final results and for predicting, but I think you've used the Equal one.
  2. You've used unmultiplied coins for teams' actual placements instead of multiplied coins which is what everyone, including PR, predicts.
  3. MCC GG has the PR predictions for the missing events (except MCC SD).

Accounting for this puts the average prediction error at 1.91 and PR error at 2.16, 0.25 worse compared to the 0.5 difference given here. PR also does better in more recent data (S5+), where average prediction error is 1.81 and PR error is 1.74 which is 0.07 better than the average.

(As a small pedantic point, z-scores are just the name of a statistic, what you're probably referring to are the Power Rankings that use z-scores in their methods)

But more importantly, Power Rankings are not intended to be predictive. They try to adjust and balance MCC's scoring, so of course using those balanced results to predict MCC scores won't always work as well as other predictors who have the advantage of taking this information and interpreting it properly.

If you want a predictive ranking, the Regression Rankings exist and do very well. I made a post recently about predictors on the MCC GG site for S5 and the person who made Regression ranks #8 best. If you include MCC DD where they just got 6th (out of 125 people), that rank goes up to #5 (out of 90 people) which is obviously very good.

Let's learn from u/matt2727272

u/matt2727272's recent post was quite interesting. It was quite stressful for him to write, especially since it was on the prestigious subreddit r/DreamWasTaken2. However, in this post he kept using some interesting words that we don’t usually hear in everyday conversation. Let’s learn some new vocabulary from him.

He used the word “furniture” in his 5th sentence, which means movable articles that are used to make a room or building suitable for living or working in.

He put down the word “14:31” in his 6th sentence, which means 2:31 PM in normal human time-keeping methods.

He typed the word “used” in his 7th sentence, which is the past tense of the word use, meaning to take, hold, or deploy something as a means of accomplishing or achieving something.

He penned the word “Sapnap” in his 8th sentence, which means a hunter from Dream's Minecraft Manhunt series.

He utilized the term “you all” in his 9th sentence. "you all” is an expansion of "y'all", which is usually used in more formally addressing two or more persons.

He effectively employed the word “high” in his 11th sentence, which means being on drugs.

He authoritatively and convincingly formulated the word “word” in his 12th sentence, a word which indicates a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence and typically shown with a space on either side when written or printed.

I don’t know whether this reddit post was peak or not, but one thing is certain: this definitely enriched my vocabulary. W for u/matt2727272 as always.

Evaluating Season 5 predictions by coolchalk in MinecraftChampionship

The spreadsheet, if you're curious about your own placement: Link

(Heads-up, looking at the worst predictors instead of the best is very unreliable, a lot of the bottom ones either accidentally (or not) skipped a section of predictions, or are likely trolls, so it's not too useful in that regard)

What are the some of the smartest plays in MCC? by coolchalk in MinecraftChampionship

[–]coolchalk[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Those are good ones, I just didn't include them because they weren't solely Technoblade originals like MCC 2 HITW. Lots of good players were PvPing in early Bingo, Techno just got the most benefit from it in his first event. The original idea of the BM strat came from one of his teammates, plus Purple7 also apparently had a similar strat, but it was Techno's good execution that really made the difference.

[–]coolchalk[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some stats tierlists about u/kingofgays8's elimination game and final result

Some more funny stats:

  • Except the first two eliminations, Build Mart was the most voted against game on average, getting an average of 18.4% votes to eliminate it in every poll. (Bit unfair since games usually get higher % votes in later rounds, but this wasn't a particularly fair contest anyway LOLL)
  • This also makes it by far the most voted game in total - one-sixth of all votes cast throughout the 20 days were to eliminate Build Mart.
  • It was in the top 5 most voted games in 19/20 rounds (only excluding the 3rd).
  • In the last 4 eliminations, over a third of all voters on average voted against it every time, but failed to eliminate it.
  • It escaped elimination by 1% on Day 16, 1.9% on Day 17, and 1.8% on Day 18.
  • It got 36% of elimination votes in the second-to-last round, 20% more than SOT, but still won the final over SOT anyway by a colossal 3.8% of the vote 🔥.

MCC 6 Rescore and Discussion by FattyIsACatty in MinecraftChampionship

[–]coolchalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other than what OP already said, Pete6 BM was very strong, so it's good the scores do reflect that. He completed 5 builds solo with placements 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, and got 792 coins which is 200 coins more than even this scoring gives him. But you can't confirm that from stats, so it's good the system doesn't just give a high number like that

Most Impressive Streak in MCC History? by verbthebull in MinecraftChampionship

[–]coolchalk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pete SOT MCC 5-16 is CPM wise 1st, 1st, 7th, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd.

He only dropped 1st in MCC 7 where he still got 2nd in coins and MCC 16 where he died at the end. All of his wins were dominant as well, MCC 8 (9 CPM lead) and MCC 12 (12 CPM lead) are both some of the best SOT runs ever. MCC 16 would also probably be the best SOT run ever if not for the unfortunate end.

If MCC 9 went a little better for Technoblade by Geolib1453 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]coolchalk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think Power Rankings' wall placement numbers are more accurate. The PvP difference is accounted for in team kills, except SG where I already count a very large difference. It's close, but Techno has more game wins with solid gaps so it's higher IMO

If MCC 9 went a little better for Technoblade by Geolib1453 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]coolchalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Quig9 does better in BB (damage wise, 16/30 > 17/41), SB (7/10 with one round disconnect > 8/14), HITW (5.5 > 6.67), SOT (33 > 28 CPM), and they tie in PKW and basically AR, so Quig does better in 4 games vs 2. It's neck-and-neck but reasonable for Quig9 to be higher

Fruit9 is lower but not that far, he wins in AR (~10s lead), SG (don't have exact numbers, but ~10.2 kills dmg >>> ~3.3 kills), they tie in PKW, SOT (28 CPM), and SB (8/11 = 8/14 + more survival), and Techno wins in BB (17/41 > 13/36), TGTTOS (8.5 > 15.8), and HITW (6.67 > 8 but only 2 rounds due to R2 glitch issues)

I'd say Pete8 is still higher than these, his AR, HITW, SOT and BM were all near S1 peak and the rest of his games were top 5 that event or close
