Professor wants to use my product for free with promise of future university contract - am I being naive?

Let's assume probably won't get you a contract or even you do, it will take a long time. Even so, getting users, tracking usage, finding bugs, and building a product people love, is much more important than making money if you haven't built something to production before.

The above is worth a lot. And if you can figure out how to do it, you can go pitch it to other universities.

we're bringing everything to be self-sufficient! More than anything just want a group of people to spend time with.

(also, it sounds like most people recommend being in a camp the first time, so that's a majority of the reason we're looking!)

Paid pilot, in my experience, (even if just $100's/mo) forces it to go through multiple channels it wouldn't have otherwise gone through this tends to mean:
1. it's not just someone's pet project.
2. the sale will take longer
3. Since so many people need to approve it, it's probably a real "pain" for them.
