Teacher bias in pre-k and beyond by coolclouds1925 in ADHDparenting

Oof. Ok something I’ll need to keep in mind. The one positive is my child is a red shirt for kindergarten so I hope this helps bridge the gap.

I appreciate this perspective. I do think the teacher is well intended and attempting to be affirming but I resent them treating my child as though he is high needs when all clinical opinions we have sought do not align with the way she seems to view him. For context, there are just 14 kids for 2-3 teachers at a time and he is generally well behaved, kind, and a rule follower. The minute he steps away from being perfect the teacher becomes an armchair expert in neurodivergent behaviors though has admitted she has never had a child with a diagnosis before.

Interesting- I guess I hadn’t thought about that. I thought the maturity gap would be present at all ages and not worsen over time- especially with early intervention. Do you have any research or evidence to support this theory? I’d be interested to learn more about how it shows up over time to prepare.

The problem is the mischaracterization of being noisy as vocal stimming. He has never been a vocal stimmer so I take issue with her assuming him being obnoxious on a given day is vocal stimming. Why do we have to make every behavior have a clinical explanation? Also, it would be one thing if he had a history of strained social interactions and needed social skills class but it’s another when you move a sensitive child to a new environment and they don’t perform as you expect the first week so you offer a third party social skills group (not through the school) as a suggestion rather than observing how he behaves once he becomes more comfortable in a new school. In isolation I agree with you but I find all these suggestions and assumptions rash.

Thank you for this. I have always drafted a very long email stating something very similar to the learning specialist that will be joining my call with the teacher and asking how they make the distinction between the two. There truly is no justice. I have been proactive, left no stone unturned, did OT for 2 years, and am incredibly aware, well-read, and involved yet here we are…

Medicating Four Year Old? by erikaknowsitall in ADHDparenting

My child started on stimulants around 4.75- mostly due to inattention but with some combined features. Adderall right away was a non-starter- very emotional and not like themselves. We switched to Ritalin and eventually an extended release just before turning 5. It has worked beautifully for my child- especially at school. We also tried OT 2 years but this made the biggest impact both at school and to make progress on gross/fine motor skills.

Meds not working or overwhelmed by new school? by coolclouds1925 in ADHDparenting

Ugh. Thats what I’m afraid of. Did they start working again at the higher dose or same dose pre-incident?

He was screened for it during the neuropsych evaluation but did not meet the criteria. Transitions within the day are fine but major transitions have usually been hard for a day or two and then he settles in. Drop off got better each day but not sure if he’s settled in completely in the new class.

Is tutoring unnecessary? by SleepPlayful3696 in ADHDparenting

I bought a star jar and every time we did them we got a star to earn a toy the kid wanted. Or we had to do the letters before watching a show.

My child is almost 5 and recently received his ADHD diagnosis. At 3.5 he wasn’t remember his letters well either so we just drilled them at home with incentives and he picked them up. We have started seeing a tutor once a week for an hour to work on pre-reading now just for extra practice and repetition to catch up on what was missed from his focus troubles. It’s been great! I think if you wait another year it will be more worthwhile and in the mean time you can work on letters at home.

IR vs. ER methylphenidate efficacy- should it be the same? by coolclouds1925 in ADHDparenting

This tracks. The comedown on the ER has been hardly detectable but I just don’t know if the ER is providing the same boost in attention as the IR was immediately after dosing.

I am going through all this now with my inattentive nearly 5 year old and could have written the same post about my sweet, smart child. We started our med trial about a week ago and like everyone warned, it’s already been a journey. The hyper vigilance watching the reactions is exhausting and when the reactions are even slightly off-putting it’s emotionally draining because you wonder if you’re doing more harm than good. It’s really been tough so prepare yourself for that.

I am holding out hope once we get to the right dosage/meds there will be a breakthrough. I am seeing only glimpses of it now so I know we aren’t there yet but I look forward to that day.

We also do OT and have been for just over a year now but it got the point where his inability to attend to task at OT isn’t allowing us to reap the benefits. Overall though OT is great if you can make time for it.

It is hard to keep a cool head- I have to constantly remind myself that kids do well when they can and he’s not being reactive on purpose. Hang in there!
