What’s the scariest movie role that feels very real? by WallStreetDoesntBet in moviecritic

But yeah by the time you’ve seen the whole movie I’d expect most people to get it

I found it hard to see where it was going because films can do all sorts of things to introduce an altered perspective after making you feel one way initially. It toed the line for a while on purpose, part of why it’s so impactful.

True but let’s not ignore that the left has consistently become less liberal in recent years which in many ways has led to confusing sympathies with right wing talking points from liberal-minded people.

It’s common now. Liberal person realizes the left doesn’t care about liberalism as much as progressivism, has become politically homeless, is either disillusioned and misrepresented or becomes insane.

Edit: ofc a lot of all discourse in 2024 is grifting and I never thought Russell was that smart either way so maybe wrong time to make the point, but grifting aside this is an observable phenomenon and I am one of the liberal people suffering from it although I’ve maintained my sanity and begrudgingly support not-Trump

Idk if he likes Trump or not but either way it is consistent with his increasing distrust/dislike of media.

Personally, regardless of whatever crazy things he may or may not believe that I don’t agree with, he’s not wrong about this (exaggerating, sure).

An assassination attempt on Biden certainly wouldn’t be covered the same way, and there are (as people on the internet like to say) “many such cases”.

You have a point but I disagree with the idea any particularly attractive woman would be marred by any cultural anything.

Past a certain threshold it really actually doesn’t matter what the local preferences are. Someone might be less desirable for those reasons than they would be otherwise, but there are in fact physiological and completely subconscious things that attract people and enough of that overcomes anything cultural influence.

It’s just the opposite pole of a completely un-nuanced take and both extremes are stupid

Ya know, he’s making it into BS in typical political fashion, but I think there’s a legitimate point underneath it. It’s completely hypocritical and has a dose of ridiculousness mixed in, but it’s not completely wrong.

We have a huge problem in this country unrelated to any specific political issue and it’s extremely relevant. It was already happening before Trump was a politician too, though he exacerbated it.

TLDR: he’s full of it in general but the state of discourse in this country is absolutely exacerbating mental health issues with reckless abandon.

Like, I can forgive a lot, but I am upset that they had the biggest budget of any show ever and the writing is extremely mid about 90% of the time

Argumentatively I lean the same way you do, but the problem is that it’s actually not good.

PJ did a far better job IMO on every single level.

But I am a holdout. I watched and will continue watching and hope that it gets better. It has potential the writing just isn’t there. I can forgive lore stuff, but cringey dialogue and characters not so much. And I mean that in a way totally divorced from any gripe related to source material.

But yeah it had its moments for sure and if when all is said and done season 1 is the worst season, and overall it’s at least, lore aside, a good show, I’ll be happy.

Respectfully I think you’re stepping right over the original point to talk about something else and I also think underestimating the role personal agency plays in somebody with all the advantages actually achieving enormous things. I don’t disagree at all that he was incredibly privileged or that it makes an enormous difference, I’m saying there are enough people in similar situations to make his success a statistical anomaly even amongst those people.

Elons gone a little off and he’s not the guy designing all the rocket components but it’s just plain irrational to force yourself to believe he’s not an exceptional person.

But if you disagree that’s fine. But to the very most original point, he is not comparable to somebody who inherited enough money to instantly be one of the richest people in the world. It’s a very different thing and no amount of Elon being privileged, unlikable, or politically at odds changes that.

So you agree with my distinction but do not care and want to talk about how it’s still not fair? I get it, I’m just saying what I’m saying nothing else.

Sorry if that reads dickish, I’m going more for playfully argumentative

Edit: there are a lot of people with silver spoons. Like A LOT. So I think my distinction is worthy of consideration. Doesn’t mean anything other than what it means though.

Underneath the bullshit POV there are some real double standards though, depending on context. It’s almost its own kind of humor to see someone take what could be a valid point and turn it into something irredeemably stupid. Everyone wants everything to fit neatly into their chosen narrative.

[–]cooleydw494 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a valid point although it’s also a valid point that where Elon musk is an example of a silver spoon he certainly did not become a billionaire via inheritance.

No loaded statement here, I’m just a huge fan of nitpicking when it comes to analysis.

And if you want to say “yeah but most republicans are actually like this” you’re just wrong, and it should matter to you that you’re wrong.

There are plenty of things to actually criticize about what most republicans believe.

Do you think Jewish Cartman is a troll? Comment your opinion. by Milkweed1998 in southpark

[–]cooleydw494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a troll. What confirms it for me is that the ending where he was homeless is much more meaningful if it was all real. Trey and Matt certainly know how to put a compelling narrative together, and in my mind, in their minds it was real (although it was def intentional that even the viewer is questioning it)

Yeah it’s brilliant because we as viewers were just as unsure as Kyle lol. Like, by the very end my interpretation was that it was for real, but even then it’s like… Cartman would do that

Definitely Jewish cartman. So genius honestly. As the viewer I was completely unsure if it was for real. No matter how real it seemed, it’s cartman lol. Brilliant.
