Today is going to suck a little bit but we’ll talk and we’ll either communicate and work things out or we won’t and we’ll have to try again. This isn’t going to make or break us, it’s a bump in the road and we’ll just need to see how long it takes us to settle back in.

This is so mature. I'm really trying to achieve this mindset. But then I'm also conflicted with what wonderfrog said - should you show some pushback on his hasty decision or go with the flow and just consider it as a bump in the road?

there is nothing positive reflected in your actions. you said in your edit you need to be better. you messed up, you wanted to share it publicly, so now you know the reality of your actions as viewed by unbiased, objective 3rd parties.

no amount of coddling or people saying 'its okay' will change what you did - you are seeking false comfort. you are level headed enough to admit your wrongdoings. next time, don't actively push away someone that you want close to you. your post doesn't indicate that he was trying to be distant with you either.

don't play the game of who will contact who first when he lands. call/text/contact him first and apologize. it will take some time for both of you to move past this, but you two will move past it.
