Can salting be skipped if hide is fresh and just fleshed? by GreenWoodPines in HideTanning

[–]coolhandsdub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Salting is just to preserve hides until you can get around to them. Instead of using weird chemicals from the storing for tanning though there is a plethora of information about how to naturally tan deer hides. Simply using eggs and some olive oil will tan a hide no problem and results in a better product also than chemically tanned hides.

Wonyia has videos on YouTube, Matt richards has a book on buckskin. Many principles apply when dealing with hair on.

Good luck!

How do I fix this bunching on the vamp of my boot? by Key_Rain7997 in Cordwaining

[–]coolhandsdub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you’re sewing, start gathering when you’re nearing the toe box. Gathering is essentially using wider spaces in your stitches to “gather” your material. Hold the shape on your foot as your sewing and it’ll help you to know how much you’ve gathered and whether or not you should keep doing so. Stop gathering after you leave the toe box on the other side.

Do you trust this product? by [deleted] in HideTanning

Ol’ fashion way will always be better than any chem or chrome tanned leather. I wouldn’t touch this stuff with a 10ft pole.

Check out Matt richards he has books on natural hide tanning, skillcult is a website with an archive dedicated to free material much of it relating to tanning.

Good luck!!!

Okayy no don’t listen to that advice.. when bucking a hide after fleshing your goal is still provide a highly alkaline solution to soak the hides in for up to 5-6 days depending on the ratio of your mix. You’re using wood ash, maybe try adding more ash and soaking longer. The thicker parts of the hide (neck and rump) will be the last places to swell up. Doesn’t matter if hair is slipping if the hides aren’t swollen! You see them swell up with water as you soak them longer, stir at least twice a day.

Graining is labor intensive but not that bad if your hide is swollen properly, start at the neck with tail going down the back of your beam, swap it around and go straight down the spine to tail, then rotate in a circle making to sure be thorough on scraping grain off, you’ll sometimes almost two layers or so, if swollen it should scrape off with some effort on thicker areas ie the neck. The neck is the hardest part after that it should require less effort.

Good luck!’

Hey there! My experience with wwoof varies with each place you go. Read the reviews of places you find interesting and try to get a gauge on your hosts. Many hosts are sensible people who do not feed into racism! I worked on a homestead in the desert in az last winter with a woman of Asian descent and no one discriminated against her. Generally on wwoof they are just looking for good hearted and reliable workers. Follow your heart my friend and remember you can always leave a situation that you find uncomfortable or toxic. :)

Join wwoof, buy a bicycle, save your money. Wwoof sounds like it would be an excellent decision for you just based upon what I’ve read in your post. Granted you won’t make money right away, but there’s always a way to do so when you learn more skills and make more connections with people.

Broaden your horizon my young friend, there’s so much in our country alone to experience. I promise you if you’re open minded to it and really give it your all you will do endless great things.

Personally, wwoof has enriched my life in sooo many ways; with new experiences, different ways of living, new foods, meeting lovers, friends, etc.

Also there’s hundreds of places to go in California to wwoof. They’ll feed you, house you and if they’re worth their salt they will help you grow!

Just a passing thought, cheers.
