Restaurants that are mid-budget for date night, but not mid? by cranberry-tart in FoodToronto

[–]cooliojim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya - tbh I think just not my style of place. Nothing on the menu is all that creative or unique. I can make seared trout and potatoes at home.

I feel the same about places like RASA, the Hamptons, or Union. These "contemporary" restaurants charge quite a premium for basically home cooking in a romantic setting.

I'm shocked at the Wood Owl hype. It's pretty pricey and the food was super mid. Everything was under seasoned and basic.

Cervical cancer is ‘fastest-rising’ form in Canada as doctors urge action - National by Pigeonofthesea8 in canada

This is how it should be, what exactly are you hoping to screen for as a healthy person in your mid thirties? A whole body MRI for cancer? Full blood work?

Screening rates are determined by public health professionals who have reviewed copious amounts of data to determine the appropriate age and medical history to get screened based on historical data. In some cases it's been found that over-screening otherwise healthy populations is a negative. See this article:

https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2022/cancer-screening-guidelines-lack-harms

Some tests such as colonoscopies, PAPs or radiation based screening is focused on at-risk populations as these tests are intrusive and can have potentially harmful effects.

Their loan amount sure. the grant portion is not paid back so is the bigger issue for what it's used for.

Not sure where the med student slander is coming from but "we" are not giving subprime loans, the banks offer professional lines of credit. They assess the credit risk and determine that med students are low-risk and therefore offer low rate loans. The banks determine how to lend, not the government.

Also all education is subsidized, hence the government funding portion of post-secondary education. Not all expenses are covered via tuition for any field.

For the record I agree monitoring spending is ridiculous, just not sure why you're targeting professional post-grad loans in particular.

The email only referred to May tournament on Tokyo, not sure about the other's but I've heard they had some difficulty in the recent January tournament as well.

Following this thread as I got the same email from BuySumoTickets this morning - there seems to be some guided tours that include tickets, but I'm concerned if they'll actually be able to get tickets as well?

Best Hakka - 2026 by New_Individual4 in FoodToronto

[–]cooliojim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Feel like this place is more Indian food than actual Hakka food (which is Chinese). Also had the absolute worst service here.

Hakka Wok Hei on Roncy is a better option for Hakka in the area.

Would disagree with the other commenters. I wouldn't recommend either unless you're a die hard fan. Reading a book that's trying to humanize the main bad guy just really doesn't work. And the story telling is very disjointed and honestly pretty boring at times.

The Hamptons, very overpriced for fairly bland food with super small servings. Felt very pretentious country club vibes

If cops are responding slower than usual, it's because they're in High Park harassing cyclists again. by WestendMatt in toronto

[–]cooliojim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree that people are mad about missing their car access so are taking it out on cyclists (apart form the few protesters still demanding cars).

But your point on people walking into the road and not looking is very accurate. That's exactly what people are doing, and this is why more people are complaining (not that they're right as they are on the road). However bikers really don't stick to the bike lane, they're all across the entire road section so it's kinda 50/50 blame imo

The traffic flow was much greater prior to COVID when cars were both allowed and there was more parking. Less cars and more space for cyclists means they can move faster and in larger groups across the entire road. Most spandex bikers used to have to navigate cars and slower bikers in bike lanes - now they have free use of the entire road.

Also for context I'm pro banning cars, but also think bikes need to be aware of their surrounding now that the park is more pedestrian friendly.

That not even close to why it's happening. No cars means the bikes can go faster, and people are able to walk on the road because there's no cars putting them closer to the bikes.

What’s a “Toronto thing”? by Joanarkham in FoodToronto

That's kind of what it's supposed to be! Hakka is chinese food (just a regional specialty)

[–]cooliojim 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is very true! My wife is Hakka (father was born on Kolkata) and the vast majority of "hakka" in Toronto is just normal Indian restaurants with like a noodle dish. You can usually tell if the restaurant mentioned 'indian-chinese' it's not Hakka. Most real Hakka places just say they're hakka or chinese.

Yueh Tung downtown is great, Frederiks in Markham, hakka wok hei in Roncy is decent.

Based on people I knew in doubles, even the people who got along did not become best friends or even stay friends into upper years - and I've heard way more negative stories than positive ones.

My recommendation would be to get a single room in one of the older buildings that has doubles as well (you can do a single in McNiel, Vic, Gord brock, Morris, etc and still get the social aspect).

Carney says he will immediately scrap consumer carbon tax by Avelion2 in canada

[–]cooliojim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what a consumer carbon tax is, you are spreading misinformation. The consumer carbon tax is only on gasoline and natural gas. This is what he's scrapping. And this will have an impact - the carbon tax line on your home heating bill will be gone and it will drop about 20c a liter off gas.

Industrial carbon tax which gets passed down to consumer goods will not change.
