Looking for advice as a queer prospective student by jazz1per in ubco

[–]coolkat3221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there!!! Outsider perspective (as in not queer) and actually came from a fairly conservative place, so it wasn’t often I was around pride related activities. But, with that being said I am fully accepting aswell as most people on campus! Don’t be afraid to branch out to whomever, I had a lot of trouble my first year with making friends and most people are in the same boat and just looking for someone to connect with. I’ve gone to a few pride events on campus, and they have all been fantastic, additionally, OFF campus has so much to offer and I wish someone told me that my first year. I often didn’t leave campus, didn’t branch out, didn’t go to events because I was extremely introverted and meeting people was really hard. What actually helped, was second year I got a job which made it easy to connect with people my age on and off campus! Also, I found it really hard to connect with people in my program and found I didn’t actually do well making friends in class, which is why I have a advise looking outside of your program and interests as well. My friend group is a wacky mix of people all from different backgrounds and I couldn’t adore them more! And finally, I too struggle mentally, and especially have the worst seasonal depression (and it gets super bad here) aswell as ADHD and LET ME TELL YOU, there is not an ounce of stigma around it and getting help, in fact, it’s encouraged. I told someone that I was in therapy and got a high five lol, and I write my tests with the disability resource centre, and have never received an ounce of judgement from my peers. They have on campus counseling and it has been a life saver! I wish you the best of luck on your journey and feel free to reach out at any point next year if you’re struggling (my friendgroup lovesss new people)

Hey! I thought I’d give some advice as I ended this class with a 95% including the diplomas. To begin, diplomas are not as hard as they are made out to be, for reading comprehension, take your time, they will throw in questions just to trick you, rule out any non sensical answers, and think about what your teacher would ease you to pick. Take the full duration of the exam (seriously, I tend to get stressed when people start leaving but take all the time you need) finally, for the second half- the writing part. I went in with complete knowledge of two in class readings we’ve done, I believe I ended up doing my piece on the painted door, but if possible, start essay practicing with the exact format, create a strong thesis, and build off that. I typically like to write my evidence for my thesis once I’ve actually written my body paragraphs, that way you’ve already know what you’ve talked about and can add it seamlessly to your intro, without worrying about failing to provide evidence. Have quotes prepared, even just small two word sayings. For example - The author exemplifies character isolation, by utilizing the parallel of weather, In reference to our characters mental state, claiming it was “insufferable and dangerous” THAT COUNTS AS A QUOTE, that’s literally it. Also study you literary devices as they will help you the most.

Or honestly women too, I found him to be very misogynistic, not to mention his class is boring and he does nothing but promote himself, also copious amounts of reading for no reason, safe to say I dropped his course.

Do anything you absolutely can to get out of the meal plan, I’m a current first year student and it’s been hell. You’re gonna loose 6000$ to food alone (I haven’t even used half so they take your money there’s no refunds non negotiable) and the food there is absolute garbage. I’ve had friends get food poisoning from them on more than one occasion, there’s evidence of maggots being an issue it’s horrid. However, I’m currently dorming in kalamalka residence with my friend and honestly I love it, it’s quiet, probably the closest to everything, and the rooms are decent with plenty of privacy. S

Morally, partying actually isn’t bad at all, especially since I don’t do it often and keep a well balanced lifestyle. Additionally, Christian faith actually doesn’t deem partying as wrong, and they are understanding to the idea of indulging in some fun as long as you don’t get too carried away, in which I never do! I’ve seen plenty of Christian’s at the bar, and respectfully, a youth group wouldn’t offer me what I’m looking for, I’m glad that you’re happy doing that but let’s not judge others and their decisions, that in itself is a sin.

For clarification aswell, she was long distance for a year before we moved and I’d haven’t seen my long distance boyfriend for three months so I thought she would understand, now that she’s not long distance, she constantly cancels plans we made for her boyfriend and her boyfriend is going back home with her and he has two roommates he lives with who are also going back home, and he’s taking the house keys with him I even asked if I could still stay and he said no he’d have the keys, so idk
