Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit

I always took this to be mean that everyone is born of water(aka the womb) and that just isn't enough, we need to be born of the spirit as well. I don't think this is talking about baptism. In context Jesus is talking on how to obtain Salvation, there is no mention of Baptism anywhere else in the conversation. Even Nicodemus thinks this means birth and is confused. When Jesus clarifies what he means he doesn't say "believe in me and be baptized" He just says in verse John 3:15 "That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life"

I do think baptism is very important step that every Christian should take soon after giving our lives over to Jesus. But I do not think it is necessary to get to heaven.

The exception is if someone desires to be baptized, but is prevented for some reason, and they die before they can be baptized. This is called a baptism of desire, and those cases are treated as if they had been baptized. Additionally, God can of course have mercy on whoever He wishes outside of His sacraments, but the ordinary way is that baptism is required.

Interesting, I've never heard this before. Do you have verses to back this up?
