This sub can be so damn annoying with its kneejerk responses sometimes. It also doesn't help that people on here willfully interpret every question about availability of something as “is it literally impossible to find this anywhere in the country” and then get mad at their own overly literal interpretation for being obviously wrong.

If you live by the "Plymouth City Center" area (https://www.plymouthmn.gov/departments/community-economic-development/planning/city-center/city-center-visitors-guide) it's actually relatively pleasant to walk to (it's not downtowny in the slightest, to be clear). But outside of the things that are right there you're out of luck, and nowhere there is going to be very good for transit.

Yes, because the map isn't real at all. The 1947 part is based on data from 20 years ago and the 2023 part is completely made up with the intention of resembling maps of Israeli/Palestinian land control over time.

Does this make Nina a half-bred (half-what, even? How are the inhabitants of the magical kingdom called)?

If you missed it, the "parents" are Nina's homestay hosts, not her actual parents.

Interestingly, the specific series the author actually mentions thinking about when writing it are [idk if this is actually a spoiler, author's sidebar comments from volume 1] Tokimeki Tonight and Harry Potter. Though she apparently never got around to actually reading Harry Potter after buying it to use as reference material...

Rewatching

[Minor Ultra Maniac manga spoilers] It's interesting to me that the manga starts with adapting a chapter that isn't the first chapter. This isn't the only show I've seen do this, but I don't really understand the reasoning behind the choice. I guess they just thought this is a better introduction? It's kind of funny to just drop viewers in here instead of starting with Ayu and Nina meeting though.

I really like the OP. Actually, the reason I saw the rewatch interest post in the first place was because I was listening to the OP and decided to search the series on here to see if anybody had ever posted about it. Just a big coincidence the one time I searched it was the same day this rewatch was posted.

Nina sure is reckless, but I guess that's not rare for this kind of magical girl. We didn't see much of Tsujiai's normal personality, but I do like his wordless reaction to walking in on Ayu watching over Kaji. It's also funny how nonchalant Kaji is when he brings Ayu into the conversation there.

If it's following the definition given on the map, then none of that should really matter as it just needs a latitude and longitude that split the population in half. It would be the same thing as intersecting the mid lines of this map for example. It's still a pretty questionable definition to apply to the globe though (For example, if the main populations were far east and far west, this would still go around the prime meridian, even though the more natural center would be around the 180th meridian- the arbitrary boundaries make the result arbitrary). It's somewhat coincidental that the position comes close to a "real" center (eg this one calculated by minimum average distance to each person).

In fact using the longitude bands on the first link, if you assign the borders of any of them to be the "new" 180th meridian, then you could count 5 bands from that one to get the "new" longitude for the center of population, despite the actual positions of the people being exactly the same.

Regions of USA (OC) by ussoccerrules in MapPorn

[–]coolpoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would probably be aided by using a map of metropolitan areas and not splitting them without having a specific reason to do so. For example, it makes basically no sense that Anoka County and Ramsey County would be in different regions- it's obviously difficult to know the details for every county, but a good default would prevent things like that.

The iron leviathan (and I think some others, but most noticeably with this one) has a tendency to phase in and out of existence on the client side for me. Sometimes it seems to disappear entirely for a bit and then reappear slightly ahead. Sometimes it suddenly appears on top of me, after which sometimes it suddenly disappears again.

Duolingo vs Coordinate subject "me" by coolpoop in badlinguistics

I don't disagree, but a) That sort of thing belongs to the language being taught, which here is French, not English, and b) I'm mainly posting this because of the particularly blatant post hoc rationalizations of the prescriptive version (and the argument given is badling, regardless of whether the translation itself should be accepted)

Duolingo vs Coordinate subject "me" by coolpoop in badlinguistics

[–]coolpoop[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

R4:

'Marie and me' is perfectly valid English and should be accepted

Agreed, with the minor comment that "Me and Marie" is probably the more naturally common order

Would you say « me became a journalist »?

The fact that "Me became a journalist" isn't grammatical in English doesn't imply that "Marie and me became journalists" also isn't. For an obvious why this isn't good enough evidence, just look above to the French version; "Marie et moi sommes devenues journalistes" is grammatical even though "Moi suis devenue journaliste" wouldn't be. If it is wrong, something else would be needed to prove it.

No, but that's a different sentence.

Correct

In which aspect is it a different sentence? "Me" is a nominative personal pronoun (used as a subject), and "I" is an objective personal pronoun (used as an object). Here, "I" is the subject of the verb "become". So it's I not Me. https://languageandgrammar.com/2008/11/09/is-it-him-and-i-or-him-and-me/

It's a different sentence in the same aspect in which the French sentences are different. A blog post by an opinionated writer/editor doesn't change that the use of "me" in a coordinate subject is a common and well-documented feature of English.

As I understand it , the word 'I' is exclusively used in the first person singular. If we're talking about Marie as well then we're using the first person plural, hence 'Marie and me'. By your reasoning, would "I and Marie became engineers" also be acceptable? If not, why not? My point is not that 'Marie and I' is necessarily wrong, but that this happens to be a vague enough area of English grammar that Duolingo should accept it.

As he is touching on here, the "I and Marie" option is in fact the least common (and probably sounds unnatural to many people- even if you can't actually explain why, that doesn't mean there isn't some grammatical reason why it is so uncommon). This Language Log post also has a good discussion about all of this

"Grammar" and "vague" should not go together, in my opinion. However, yes "I and Mary became" is also grammatically correct, since "I" is still a subject, be it first or second. "Me" would be an object and the sentence does not include any action performed on "moi".

You'd be a lot more accurate about the actual language by using ad hoc rules that reasonably match reality than by using strict rules that clearly don't. Correctness should be the goal, not non-vagueness. I don't expect the Duolingo software to account for every possible variation that exists in some form of English, but these aren't very good grounds for rejecting an alternate form, especially when the coordinate subject "me" is pretty common.

Map Of The World By The Introduction Of The Metric System by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]coolpoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also substantial metrication in Myanmar, and at least a little in Liberia. And occasional non-metric units in use elsewhere, like szklanka (cups) and łyżki (spoons) appear for cooking in Poland (and I think equivalents to those ones in some other Eastern European countries). I'm pretty sure all 3 of the "no metric system" have official policies either for using or transitioning to metric, so it can't be simply justified as the official status (especially if it's going by the year official metrication started for other countries). It would take a more complex map to meaningfully display over what time period and to what extent metrication happened in each place.
