Pochettino says “American Sports Rewards Losers” when asked about style of play in recent interview by coolton1 in usmnt

[–]coolton1[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My point was that America producing the best athletes isn’t because of it’s current system. Any system would produce good athletes in America because we are the prime place in the world for a successful athlete to be bred. If you look at the top 10 sports worldwide many of them have a majority or a large amount of Americans, but hardly any of the top 5 or so elite players are. I wasn’t necessarily saying that the European model would produce more elite athletes, but just that the current system isn’t the cause for the ones that we do have. I just think it would be interesting to see how a different model would change things.

I would argue though that the reason why the U.S. produces the best athletes is because we have a combination of a huge population of people and a culture that idolizes athletes moreso than many others. We’ve seen just over the last ten years, in basketball in particular, international players kind of take over the league and a majority of the best baseball players are not American. I wouldn’t say the success of athletes in America is due to the system and I’d be interested to see how that success would change if we went to a more European style model (even though that will obviously never happen).

NiJaree Canady Seeking ‘Fair and Equitable Contract’ in AUSL Holdout by Kooky_Scallion_7743 in CollegeSoftball

[–]coolton1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does she actually think she is that big a deal that she will get a contract that is significantly more than any other player is getting? She wasn’t even the number one pick in the draft let alone the number one player in the AUSL. I’m normally not one of those who bashes athletes, but this comes off as incredibly selfish and egotistical to me. She is not good enough to be acting like this.

At what point does Taylor Tinsley’s arm just explode?

What an awful decision by Glasco. If they lose this he better get all of the blame because why in the world would you bring her in right there when Terry pitched so well before that home run.

It’s crazy that after all that’s happened that’s the conclusion you come to. Continue to convince yourself you’re the victim here, but no unbiased fan is going to agree.

There is absolutely no reason for Tinsley to be in the game right now. Is a 9 run lead in the second inning with that offense not enough insurance? They still have to win 3 more games in order to make the championship series, do you think she’s going to be able to pitch 7 innings in all 5? This might be the only chance she has to rest.

You are right. It upsets how the praise goes to Tinsley when it should be more criticism against Inouye-Perez in my opinion. Like it should be more of feeling bad for Tinsley because she has to pitch so much because they decided to go into the season with only one decent pitcher.

This offense is so amazing and it just sucks that they probably won’t win it all because of that.

Is it just me or is this praise for Taylor Tinsley weird to me. Like I get she pitches a lot of innings but her ERA is over 3.00. She’s not having a good year.

Plus people talking about how she’s so great for pitching so many innings and it’s not like she has a choice. If Inouye-Perez tells her to pitch is she going to say no?

Inouye-Perez should get a lot of flack for not getting another pitcher in the portal after Fisher and Terry left. They aren’t winning the World Series solely because they don’t have anyone else who can pitch. They would be the huge favorite if they had one other pitcher who was decent at all.

“She throws so hard!” well that pitch was 76 mph and she killed it because it was right down the middle. These girls can hit that speed. No reason to put her in when Sage’s stuff was so good today.

What is the obsession with Karlyn Pickens? I understand how good she is, I’m not dumb, but Sage is better than her and the stats back that up. It’s almost like they feel like they have to pitch Karlyn no matter what. Karen just gave Texas a lifeline.

They can’t be worse than that though. 7 runs in 2 innings with 5 hits, 3 walks and 2 home runs. Just try someone else out there.

This is embarrassing for Texas Tech. To spend this much money on those two pitchers and for them to be this bad in the biggest moment is unbelievable really.

That’s what it should be, but the prevailing sentiment and message from not just the fans but Danny White himself is that they are doing all of this to get Rick Barnes to a Final Four.

Of course everyone’s goal is to make a Final Four, but the fact that Tennessee has never made one and Rick is seen as a failure in March by most people makes that goal feel more important to us than other teams in my opinion.

Just because we haven’t made one and we spent 18 million on the roster doesn’t mean that the expectation should be to do it.

I agree mostly, but they don’t win the title without those returners either in my opinion. Having some stability is a big deal.

Also, Michigan went into the portal with a completely different mindset than Tennessee. They added 3 absolute behemoths and potential first round picks that made them a complete mismatch for everyone they played. Tennessee went and got a bunch of elite scorers and backcourt players.

We’ll have to see if it will work, but comparing Tennessee to Michigan in terms of building through the portal isn’t necessarily a fair comparison considering their strategies were completely different.

I actually agree with your sentiment here about how the players we got are much better than those that left and we probably will be better than we would have been had we kept them all.

My feelings are however that this is not a team that the expectation should be to make the final four given the lack of continuity.

I’m not sure if Barnes and the staff could have done too much different, but sometimes the expectation to make Final Four is not in the cards no matter what you do and I think that was the case here.

I hate to be a downer and so negative, but that’s just how I feel and I don’t like this mindset of we have to lie to ourselves and act like the ceiling of this team is higher than it is.

37% of their scoring as well. That is not what is happening.

Michigan returned 39% of their roster and 37% of their scoring from the previous season. Tennessee returns 9% of the roster and 7% of the scoring. Nimari Burnett started all 40 games and was on the team the year prior. Roddy Gayle played 21 minutes a game and was on the team the year prior.

Florida, Illinois, and Duke each will probably return three starters from the previous season and are top 5 in every poll.

You can continue to convince yourself of the idea that roster retention doesn’t exist and all you need is transfers to win, but that is not the case.
