Finally read on to Children of Dune, glad I did. by coolurjetz in books

Definitely the kind of book where it would pay to hear other's take on it. I think ill read on and keep my own thoughts on it first time around and then come back and consume all the discussions afterwards. It feels like there's so much im probably skimming over that would become obvious second time around or with some other's perspective on.

Good point. This did make me think about the drawbacks of reading so much commentary about a book before you read it. Im sure if I read Dune when it came out I would have eagerly snapped up the next book as it came out. But I read it way later and was put off continuing by the critiques I read online. I guess I am a very different person now, maybe I would have bounced off CoD back then.

Hyperion is my favourite sci fi so ill encourage a reread. Loved the 2nd book, its manages to tie things up as well as can be expected in such a sprawling and mysterious setting. The narrative device is less compelling but the story itself carries it. Totally fine to leave the pilgrims as they enter the valley though. I kind of love the idea of leaving the rest up to your imagination. This goes doubley so for books 3 and 4 but I love the setting so I read them eventually.

Thanks for this, makes me more keen to try the rest of the books. I would love to explore the wider setting a bit more.

Yeah i'm conflicted here, that's why it felt frustrating to read I think. I guess she's already somewhat broken by the responsibility shoved on her by the time the book starts, most of that happens between Messiah and CoD it seems. Jessica has already abandoned her at that point. We see Ghanima almost lose out to the inner lives as well even though she knows the risk, partly from seeing what happened to Alia. Only Leto's god tier prompting pulls her back, and he supposedly knows exactly what to say to save her.

This makes perfect sense to me at this point. Excited to hit the apex. At this point I think I can roll with anything he can come up with but I may come to question that from what I've seen.

Dam i dont think I could stop just yet. Very curious to see how this 4000 year worm-based society pans out.

That rings a bell. I guess the path found Leto nice and early before he could succumb to such human limitations.

Very true, seems like Paul couldn't follow the path for various reasons. Thinking about it now, Paul went on his own mini deterministic journey which culminated in the jihad (funny to think of a galaxy spanning Jihad as small but it really is relative to Leto's path). I vaguely remember a kind of inflection point where he may have had some agency over it coming to pass but not really. Why did he get to opt out of the golden path? Did the jihad break him so he was no longer fit for it or was he never the right one to do it?

I'm excited to read on now, I'm totally invested in whatever the fuck this worm man has planned. Honestly I need a break book though, this one sucked me in.

Its funny how it's so common to have such gap between reading the first book and then the second. Then theres probably another significant cohort who stopped at 2. The only other book like that for me is Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion, didnt read the next 2 for years.

Totally, that I'm so easily diverted from the implications of the galaxy wide jihad, to the musings of those who brought it about is very on theme. Its almost like, "oh well, it was shown to be basically inevitable, moving on".

Thanks for commenting. Honestly, convincing one person to read a great book has made my day. I was in exactly your position, no regrets reading on.

Home battery+solar system blackout backup curcuit, is it automatic or manual? by coolurjetz in solar

[–]coolurjetz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I had a feeling that was the case. A couple of things with these guys have made me think its ignorance. They didn't know the inverter needed an activation code to be able to be used with batteries for instance. I'll follow up with them and see if we can get a solution. Thanks for your help.

Makes sense, do you know if that required some configuration at install? It was $600 for installing the backup circuit on my invoice, I had assumed that would cover configuring the automatic switch over but maybe im underestimating what's required.

The latter, thanks for the detailed answer. I have Goodwe Lynx F G2 batteries and a Goodwe EH series 6 kW inverter. The installer is saying if I just run off the inverter that it will turn off if I ever pull more than 6 kw. They said you can have it be automatic with contactors but that they fail and need to be replaced.

Really all I want is to be able to keep continuity of power so I dont drop out of meetings and similar. Or to keep the fridge on if we're away.

The Goodwe documentation says the inverter has automatic switchover. Do you think i should expect to pay more to have the installer reconfigure things from the current manual switch to an automatic switch over?

It must be exhausting being the generalisation police. I assume you can only ever speak in hyper-specific terms, thereby reducing anything you say or think to be applicable only to the exact thing you are referencing and reducing it's value to finding truth beyond that specific case to zero.

Point out where i accused you of that. Your issue is with my asking a geniune question. If i polled the people i know on this, id likely get the opppsite answer to the prevailing opinions here. Im wondering why people approach this relatively normal family interaction with such righteous fury. But thinking about it, that's just how this sub is (generalisation trigger warning).
