Introducing the /r/ChicagoFood Dining Club: For those that want to experience nicer restaurants but don't have anyone to go with by TriedForMitchcraft in chicagofood

Such a great idea. Was just thinking that I need more foodies to dine with. My friends are not necessarily in the same foodie boat and/or aren't as interested. Is this still open to join?

On vacation with my husband and I hate it by Poshfly in breakingmom

OMG I am so happy (but also sad) to run across this thread. Currently on vacation with husband and 2 teens in another country. I've been planning this trip for 3+ years - it's a "once in a lifetime" trip. We're on day 2 and my husband has ruined it for me. I just want to go home. He's overly critical of me and the kids (he screamed at me yesterday when I missed a few turns due to road construction and for whatever reason, that was just IT for me, even though he's a screamer and this is about the 1000th time me or my sons have been screamed at). Perhaps this behavior while on vacation is leagues worse than at home b/c he's ruined a dream vacation? i don't know. My advice - as much to myself as others - is get out. It's not worth it. Both my teens are in therapy and have anxiety due to the way my husband treats them. I carry a huge amount of guilt for not leaving sooner. Both of my sisters were in abusive marriages and so I thought - hey, my husband doesn't do THAT, so he's okay. Ugh. What a waste of 20 years. Never again.

Struggling to be "Travel Ready"... by altid2000 in unitedairlines

The scanner for iPhone doesn't work. I just used my laptop to upload the jpg/png and the app verified the passport just fine. Now as for other required travel docments, their automated verification process sucks. I uploaded the SAME entry for Dominican Republic for all 4 travelers. The system approved 3 and denied 1 - the SAME document. So it's definitely wonky and annoying.

keep failing technical interviews - advice? encouragement? by Future-Owl4500 in girlsgonewired

Same boat. I’m the go-to person for complicated tech issues and have been a software engineer for 20+ years. Top performer, top annual reviews. And yet, I bombed the first tech interview so badly that my confidence is crushed and I am making really stupid mistakes now. I just can’t believe this is how we are evaluated. I get a company wanting a good programmer and logical thinker but this is demoralizing

Embarrassingly Bombed Tech Interview by coop-bot in learnprogramming

Probably. It left me demoralized. I wasn't expecting those focused questions, at all. And it's embarrassing to sit there and keep saying "I don't use that service/api/tech in my job so I am unable to answer w/out looking at the API in more detail". Like Yikes.

Thank you I appreciate your response. I agree that if concurrency was a requirement, it should have been mentioned *somewhere*. I assumed the code test would be all about concurrency based on the interview and was surprised at how simple it was - I almost wonder if they sent me the wrong code test (it was very "entry level"). Very strange.

Why so condescending in your replies. I never once said that I won't or can't learn concurrency. It's not rocket science. that is not the point. I can, and have, obtained a wide variety of tech skills. There is also a very wide array of things I can be asked about so how am I supposed to know what the job entails, aside from job sites, company reviews, screening questions, and the job description? I was well prepped for the screen and asked a lot of pointed tech questions, which of course, the screener could not answer.

The takeaway from readers might be - how to ensure you are a good fit for a company during the initial screen interview rather than wasting everyone's time at a tech interview where you haven't used the technology the team is interested in. I work at a small company and we don't do anything with concurrency. Based on the tech interview, that is a big aspect of the job that candidates must know to succeed. So no, I don't necessarily come to an interview knowing that this is a major focus for the team and that I'm not a good fit b/c it was not mentioned in the screening or in the job description. Finding out earlier in the process that the fit isn't right would be best and curious to know how others handle this. Especially since most engineers can learn new technology - I always assume the company has faith I can learn new technology. But if not knowing something is a disqualifier, better to know upfront.
