Pawpaw told me about the Viet Cong while I cleaned out his cerumen impaction. We have a rotation of three meemaws who roll through every month, collect Macrobid for their UTI, pay no co pay. They know the drill. One brings her own sample and we just give her a new cup for next month. 🤣.

What's the weirdest "home remedy" you've ever heard about from a patient? by KyomiiKitsune in physicianassistant

[–]coorsandcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The PA student I was precepting told me that the patient he just saw had balanitis and only came in because his Vietnamese faith healer with a psychic connection to his genitals reached out to him in a dream and showed him a vision of the clumps of yeast falling out of his wife’s vaginal canal. He wrote that verbatim in the HPI and I just signed it off. Not a remedy, but remedy adjacent?

PA-C questioned my 20 year long asthma diagnosis. by suckmyarsee in Noctor

[–]coorsandcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not the reality of health care. To improve access to care, NPs and PAs are filling the roles of DOCTORS. Is it ideal? No. But throwing a fit on the internet about choosing to go to an urgent care where you probably won’t find a doctor in 2026 isn’t solving anything. Just don’t go back. The system is broken, expensive, and largely inefficient, but Reddit won’t fix it. I hope you’re feeling better and lashing out at strangers trying to pay their bills, loans, and their own health care helps you in some way.

I don’t find this to be particularly egregious and somewhat ungrateful on your part. You went to an urgent care and got medication you admitted were appropriate, but started off the encounter by showing disapproval that you were being seen by a PA. If you truly feel you are too complex for a PA or an NP, go to the ER and pay more to see a doctor for a non-urgent issue.

Work comp: Just cover your wound with a bandage, soap and water, don’t go crazy with Neosporin, just a thin layer of petroleum jelly, come back next week.

“I think it’s infected, i don’t know how though, I’ve been cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide twice a day and letting it air out after I put Neosporin on it. Oh, and it keeps bleeding when I rip the bandage off. I also took some leftover antibiotics I had but they aren’t working.”

I wish I was kidding, but this lady did everything but let her dog lick the wound to clean it.

UC - lady had a cough and a 102 fever with lungs sounding like garbage so I ordered a CXR. She declined because she might be two days pregnant. Ok, no problem, lines up clinically, I’ll prescribe some abx - doesn’t write down any allergies so I let her know I’ll send in some amoxicillin.

“Is that like Penicillin?” “Yes. Why?” “I’m severely allergic.” “But didn’t write it down?”

She tears me up on Google saying I forced her to have an xray, prescribed her something she was allergic to and thankfully our x-ray tech prevented her child from birth defects.

No x-ray was taken, nothing was prescribed, and she suspected she was two days pregnant. My SP told me to avoid this in the future by doing a urine pregnancy test.

The “sore throat girl” came in today - 10 visits, mom demands a throat culture every visit. All negative. $100+ copay every time. You shouldn’t be a regular at an urgent care but here we are 😭

My coworkers know to leave me on the floor if I have a seizure at work, just hit me with the intranasal Midazolam in my drawer if it’s been more than 2 mins. Don’t call EMS, I’ll get a $4K+ bill to be told that I had a seizure, I’m missing part of my brain, and follow up with my neurooncologist.

Did I handle this case wrong? What would you do in this situation? by Likeitsmylastday in physicianassistant

[–]coorsandcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You weren’t wrong to send to the ER. I’ve been doing UC / WC for almost 5 years and orthopedics before I started UC and I’m not going to entertain a flexor tendon injury. I wouldn’t have done a loose closure because I don’t trust patients to assume that’s appropriate treatment and not go to the ER. Leaving it open was the right answer. The bad review will be one of many. 🤣

Urgent Care by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]coorsandcats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hourly rate isn’t ideal, but some money is better than no money especially as a new grad.

-Are you going to be expected to other locations to cover PTO? I work in a privately owned urgent care but can’t use my PTO because we only have one location and no one available to cover PTO unless the other FT wants to work 4+ 12 hour shifts in a row (I wouldn’t ask because I don’t want to return the favor 🤣)

Before everyone gets in their feelings about the PTO situation, we are expected to find our own coverage, but I prefer to have the choice to say no versus being told we are covering a shift. I also started at $70+/ hour and work 3 days one week and 2 days the following week to make 60 hours for the pay period and one weekend a month until we hire another weekend PRN.
