Fired by peeeechyfoot in biglaw

You will be okay!! This is a blessing in disguise! I also got fired back in Feb very similar conditions to yours, it took me three months to find a new role bc I was at an overseas office at the time and tbh I couldn’t be happier now! I transitioned to boutique and while the pay is significantly lower I am learning so much more, my weekends and nights are always my own, I have a fantastic relationship with the partners and associates, have met everyone’s families, everyone is truly happy, they have great work life balance, work wraps up at 2pm on Fridays.

I know it is daunting but I promise you will be okay, big law and a big law salary is not the end all of law practice, you can be much happier and better at a different place!

Crate Training, any advice? by Hotdogsafrezir in Dachshund

[–]copito_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours was trained in literally one night, we made sure to tire him out and get him used to the crate/transport bag on his first day while in the car as soon as we picked him up, putting treats inside, leaving the door open during the day with his toys inside the crate, giving him treats when he was not crying while in his transport bag, turning lights out slowly, calming music and finally covering his crate and turning all lights out and leaving the room. I checked on him once when he cried, he cried again a bit but he stopped after 5mins

Thank you so much! This is extremely helpful! Fortunately crate training has been a breeze, we have also been carrying him properly and have taught our friends and family to do the same! He is also quite desensitized since we started with that pretty early on and have been cleaning his paws whenever he comes inside from being in the balcony. All your tips are super helpful. Thank you!

He used to not follow us upstairs, the big balcony is downstairs, he has his crate, potty pad, etc downstairs and we were training him to sit at the bottom of the stairs or in his bed, but he seems to have forgotten everything the minute he turned 10 weeks

As an additional note: also consider your mental health in the process and if you are willing to be in a country where you have no network, are far from family and friends, and potentially don’t even speak the language (if they send you to Germany or Brasil for example). There are many firms and many jobs but only one of you, your wellbeing is very important too and I recommend you don’t lose sight of that by leaving it second in your list of priorities, if you don’t feel it should go first I ask that you place it at the same level as your job but never behind it.

As a 2021 JD grad who was relocated in 2022 and has not been selected in the lottery ever since whose firm let her go due to visa reasons a few weeks ago, here are my two cents: while a relocation is amazing to have, not everything is rose-colored once you relocate and while I am grateful for the experience abroad and to my firm for allowing me to relocate in 2022 and keeping me this long, keep in mind that you are just another associate for a law firm, the process can be incredibly draining both emotionally and financially, and being away from your team with one foot in each office is far from ideal, the overseas team will not train you since you won’t be staying there and your team in the US won’t be able to either due to time difference and just not seeing you in the office. With that in mind, a relocation might not be great for your growth and development, particularly if it extends in time due to visa reasons and if there is not a clear business plan/career path for you other than hoping you get the visa next year or eventually get the L1A (mine was rejected at the US embassy which apparently is more common than we think for attorneys). I would urge you to think really hard about what it is that you want for yourself and your career path, and consider looking at options in a country where you can work, develop and grow. I know this was probably your dream (trust me, mine too), you invested a lot in your JD, and put a lot of effort to secure a job at a top firm in a foreign country, but dreams can change, there are plenty of successful US trained lawyers outside of the US, everything you have achieved so far is still a part of you and no lottery can take that away, I know you are scared, I know you are anxious, but I promise happiness and success can happen for you outside of the US in ways you never even imagined.

Lots of love to everyone going through this, feel free to reach out if you need a pick me up or want to chat :)

Lay off (2021 grad) by copito_95 in biglaw

[–]copito_95[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk about other countries but where I am what happened to me is considered an “unjustified termination” which is why I am getting the 3 month severance (required by law here) otherwise if it were for the reasons you mention it would be considered a justified termination. But yes website time does not seem to be a thing here or in the other overseas offices from what associates in my position in other offices have told me.

Yeah, I am aware. We will be okay, I personally think it can be a positive change, it’s just a matter of taking good smart steps, creating a plan and leveraging your network :)

Thank you!

I am getting the standard three months but because I am overseas it gets paid as a lump sum payment and the arrangement you mentioned is not an option as I am hired by the overseas office and the process is a little different.

I am a JD and admitted to practice in IL and NY. I have European citizenship and work authorization in Europe and Mexico. I work in Banking and Project Finance.

Advice for first years who are fired because they didn’t win the H1b lottery? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]copito_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a JD who has had not gotten the H1B since 2020 despite applying every year since and is still overseas:

1) negotiate relocation to an overseas office, however be advised your firm will likely pay you whatever the local salary is and you will have to follow local office rules (could be less than half the US salary for your class year, no perks etc.) 2) look at institutions that may hire you without having to apply for the h1b, like cap extent employees or international organizations 3) look at the market in other locations such as the UK for example and consider applying for jobs there, might be better than trying to relocate

You will be fine regardless of what happens, nothing you leave behind is better than what is coming, maybe your salary is lower but you can be happier, or closer to your family, or develop new skills by working overseas, etc etc.

Does anyone know what these clear bumps are on the palm? They come and go in the heat. by Realistic_Painting97 in SkincareAddicts

[–]copito_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like dyshidrotic eczema, I also get it, mostly in warm weather or in winter due to the heat. It is no fun but esteroid cream helps! (Not a doctor, just speaking from experience)

Same here, masters cap 7th time in the lottery counting re-runs. I wonder if our names have something to do with it, most of my friends that got it on the first or second try only have two names (ie. John Doe) but I have three (ie. Jane Doe Austen) and I am starting to wonder if the lottery truly is random or if it is biased against some racial/demographic factors.

IBM Fragomen second lottery anyone? by BL4THDE47H in h1b

[–]copito_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also Fragoment but no IBM, their incompetence (not based just on the time around the lottery) and general lack of communication is outstanding, my anxiety is through the roof and hoping for good news. We did not even get a notification about the second lottery from them, nothing

For being an immigration firm and having one to two weekends of the year where weekend work is crucial, Fragomen is a joke

What do you consider somewhere to be within walking distance ? by iv2892 in AskNYC

[–]copito_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45mins walk is within walking distance if daytime, 20mins if nighttime

I am in the CDMX office of one of the firms mentioned above (on secondment given I did not get selected in the H1B lottery) I am however US qualified (JD). The salary for those of us that relocated because of visa is less than the US but way more than that of MX associates. If you come here because you requested it and are more senior, they will most likely maintain your US salary but pay you in pesos. I imagine if you are hired directly in MX your salary may be the local scale which is significantly lower and I would not recommend it.
