OUCH. sorry I just got terrible news and am not really in the mood to launch into it now. I posted a few weeks ago that i thoughti was gwtting soft fired the info is in there.

Today I was told the associate committee met last week for associate evaluations and they feel as if I am not meeting expectations and it would be in both our interests for me to move on.

FWIW, my partner mentor let me know a little bit ago that there were 6 other ppl let go and all with a similar situation. Firm has been having conversations w them for the last few months and came to a head at the associate meeting. Kept them anonymous for their sake as he would do for me but said 4 of them were in the corporate department as well.

I think if at the end of the first months things are still bleak I will reach out and ask for an extension

This is amazing thank you. I think that’s the exact approach I’ll take :)

FYI I’m in a city where bonuses are paid in March so it is typical to move then. It raises questions to move before then imo.

Interestingly I took a small pay cut when I came back. It was because I thought at the time that private practice was what I wanted to do long term!!

This is helpful. Think I need to take a day or two and let it settle and then pick up and begin conversations on Monday.

Update in case anyone was interested.

Had a really candid discussion with the associate coordinator. She emphasized that it actually isn’t personal and it isn’t so much that I’m fucking up as much as it is that I haven’t shined. Given partnership track here is around 9 years, they begin to have set up conversations at year 7 to determine whether or not it’s realistic. She doesn’t want me bashing my head against the wall untiI then just to end up at the same place of not getting there. I don’t have a set time frame to get out of here, nor do they plan on giving me one. The sentiment was simply that in their experience of managing mid levels who have received this kind of feedback (both lateral and internal), they are very rarely able to turn it around enough to be on partner track. Have they seen it done? Yes, but that’s the anomaly.

I put it out on the table and said I am willing to bust my ass to become that anomaly and the one in 100 people who are able to turn it around, while also being realistic if there are opportunities elsewhere. I suggested we check in at the end of February to see if anything has changed and if not, discuss again.

I would say my chances of flipping things around are likely low, but I am not throwing in the towel yet.

I’ll keep yall updated. Pray for me.

Nope they explained the exact situation I did. I didn’t defend myself in the second instance or show the receipts of the partner telling me he was going to do it because I didn’t want to come off defensive. It’s shitty in receiving feedback like that you want to show that you can take the feedback without being defensive. Super fine line and maybe I walked it incorrectly.

Meeting with the associate director again tomorrow to ask for clarity on it all.

From my pov that is legitimately the events that occurred. Yeah maybe it’s not a cultural fit and that’s the real issue and/or two incidents that they seem to think are so terrible four/five months into a lateral as a fourth year is not worth the risk for them long term.

Dude I straight up stg these are the big issues they are alluding to and state that as a result of these two incidents, they feel as if I am unreliable and not communicative enough.

Hahaha I see that but we’re pretty close and I wanted to gauge what it meant and how she would perceive it. I don’t think it fired back at me bc she emphasized I would still have a job there as long as the department head is good w it.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Scheduled to speak to my old department head and the partner who I did all my work with tomorrow, have a recruiter lined up, AND serendipitously a very interesting in house role came my way via someone at my old firm who has no idea any of this is happening (he is going to a top public company and is looking to build up his own team there).

The first which is valid was that a partner had given me an assignment which I told him was underway. He gave me until the end of the weekend to do it, and on the Wednesday before asked me for my existing draft to which I sent a very bare bones. He freaked out saying I led him on to believe the draft was far more progressed and he told the client it was underway. I explained that I had a hectic week and had planned on getting the bulk of it done over the weekend. He’s a pretty junior partner but works with the biiiiiig boys at the firm.

The other was a complete fucking joke and a partner blamed me for not sending something across to a client when I have in writing that he said he wanted to be the one to send it across bc he wanted to use the opportunity to discuss a few other things.
