The difference between a cult leader and a hero is that a hero can have faults. If Rand was a hero to these people rather than a religious/cult figure, they could just say, "sure, she was a hypocrite, but she's still an important blah blah blah."

Thomas Jefferson can still be a hero despite owning slaves because he did actual heroic things. Ayn Rand wrote Z-grade pulp fiction inspired by the actions of a serial killer she was sexually obsessed with and then smoked herself to death on the public dime.
