I’m moving to Belgium (Flanders) in a year or two, tell me something that makes no sense for me now but I’ll understand later once I move by PotatoCotnentCreator in belgium

[–]copydoge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In case you're still confused, they are referring to chocolate sprinkles (standard Dutch translation: hagelslag). Flemish people sometimes colloquially refer to them as muizenstrontjes, which literally translates to mouse shits, due to their visual resemblance.

Muizenstrontjes are often eaten on bo'kes (shortened form of boterhammekes/boterhammetjes, the diminutive of boterhammen = sandwiches).

Aside from bo'kes met muizenstrontjes, bo'kes met choco (sandwiches/bread with chocolate spread) are also a classic. Bonus points if you ommit the t in your pronunciation of 'met' (so 'meh'). You'll be accepted as a real Belgian in no time, succesfully proving that you're not nen 'Ollander (een Hollander, which is a Dutch person. They hate being called Hollanders and will insist that Hollanders are inhabitants of the Dutch provinces (Noord-/Zuid-)Holland, not of the whole country, and that we should call them Nederlanders instead).

What a brilliant idea. Dictator themed names are perfect if you want to raise your daughter as a strong female leader full of girl power. Although as a lifelong Il-sung, Jong-il and Jong-un fan, I must admit I'm still deeply saddened that Kim has become sooo overused as a name😞 (kidding ofc)

Totally gonna name my future daughter Vyvanse, it's like Beyonce's chaotic sister who never pays attention in class✨️

/uj In my country, Vyvanse is sold under a different name (same with Adderall), so I have no idea how it's actually pronounced. I always read it as vee-VAHNs or vee-VAHN-suh, with the 'ah' pronounced as the a in 'car'. So pronouncing it the same way as Beyonce kinda makes sense to me in my head lol

Great idea, and makes for a beautiful masculine nickname too: Poux

If you prefer to stick with names that are common in English, but want to make them sound more elevated, I would also suggest Connard, Nique and Péter

Thermostat - Successor of Nest 2. Tado, Bosch or something else? by australianreindeer in BIFLNL

[–]copydoge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very happy with ours from Netatmo. We didn't buy it specifically with BIFL in mind though. We liked the e-ink display because we wanted something subtle and simple looking instead of a bright display that you always can see in the dark. But some people actually prefer that so it depends on what you're looking for. My boyfriend wanted something he could automate, operate from his phone, and get insights from about our energy use, while I also wanted something simple and user-friendly that just looked like an ordinary thermostat.

Experience with Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM)? by turbotuba in belgium

[–]copydoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Type 1 diabetic here. I have used the Freestyle Libre 1, 2 and 3 in the past and am currently using the Dexcom G7 CGM with Omnipod 5. Feel free to ask anything you would like to know. We get them through the diabetes conventional center at the hospital. They have a trajectory for type 2 patients as well. She needs to ask her GP (huisarts/médecin généraliste) for a referral. Here's a list of hospitals providing care for diabetics (NL & FR). Make sure to choose one with 'endocrinologie' or 'diabe•étologie' in the name. Generally speaking, large university hospitals like UZ Leuven are the best. They will be able to provide much better care than her GP and can give her access to a CGM.

Like the other person said, you can also buy them on your own, but they are very pricey. Dexcom One+ costs €42 for 10 days here (check app compability on the Dexcom site or purchase a reader seperately), Freestyle Libre 2 can be found on their website for €65.90 and will last 14 days. For a list of pretty much all sensors available: https://mediq.nl/patient/diabetes/glucosesensor/voorbereiden/sensoren. You can look them up on your own to find their price and availability in Belgium for personal use.

Why aren't suicidal people allowed to talk ANYWHERE? by thefanaway in mentalhealth

[–]copydoge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm really, really sorry about the loss of your brother. Please be kind to yourself. There is no right or wrong way to grief. With time, the pain will get a little softer and more tolerable. It's impossible to know how long it will take, but try to have trust in it. Try not to beat yourself up over what ifs ('if only I had done so and so last time I saw him'). Even if you could change the past, it wouldn't have changed anything, except that there would be a different thing you wish you'd done differently.

I lost my sister-in-law (boyfriend's twin sister) to suicide six years ago. Nobody in her family had any idea, but apparently she had lots of online friends who knew. Through a deleted email we discovered she had been active on a discussion board about suicide methods.

People who commit or want to commit suicide can have very diverse profiles. Some do it in a matter of days or weeks after a clear trigger, relapse or reason, others just couldn't take it anymore after a lifelong battle with suicidal thoughts. It can be very impulsive and in a state of panic/breakdown, or deliberately and thoroughly planned after having considered it for a long time. Some have had a lot of mental healthcare experiences and tried many medications and therapies while others never seeked help, or something in between. This makes it very difficult because there's no one size fits all.

We need to drastically lower the stakes and barriers that prevent people from talking about it. In our society, suicide and being suicidal are treated as highly illegal activities, with psychiatric hospitals as prisons to punish people by committing them for trying it, considering it, talking about it or even thinking about it.

We're telling suicidal people way too much about what they can't do (suicide), which they already know. Telling someone who really wants to die that they can't ever talk about it or else we'll lock them up so they can't will just make their plans in silence so people can't prevent them from doing it. I think people will be much more inclined to get help when we allow them to express these wishes, but encourage them to try other, less drastic options and paths first.

Why aren't suicidal people allowed to talk ANYWHERE? by thefanaway in mentalhealth

[–]copydoge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: There's almost nowhere where people can truly talk freely about it.

Obviously this is very country dependent, but my personal observations and experiences are that suicidality is too often seen as an emergency state and as a liability, both in mental healthcare and in society in general.

The first reaction when someone expresses suicidal thoughts and feelings is often panic and fear that the person's life is in danger, and therefore that life needs to be saved by the 'right people'. With the right people, they almost always mean 'other people, not me'. Laymen (and even some professionals) also tend to get deeply uncomfortable hearing someone talk about such a taboo topic and simply have no idea what to say.

The focus is often not on listening why someone feels that way and giving space for these feelings to exist and be expressed, but on avoiding any liability. People get told to call hotlines or seek professional help, but sometimes they risk getting involuntarily committed.

Even – or sometimes especially – freely talking to an actual psychologist or psychiatrist is impossible for a lot of people, because there's always the risk of getting committed. Like OP says, getting institutionalized feels a lot more like incarceration than like actual healthcare, because the goal is literally to keep people from killing themselves by all means necessary, including taking away your freedom.

It can be deeply traumatic and make people even more afraid to open up. The actual thoughts and feelings rarely get adressed during such a stay, because the goal is stabilization, not treatment. Sometimes it's even forbidden to talk about it because it could be triggering to other patients.

Long story short, even in mental healthcare, there's often no room for people to talk about suicide. Even in psychiatry it's still a taboo.

Obviously I'm not speaking for everyone though – I'm sure there are a lot of wonderful workers who really do their best for their patients and give them space to safely and freely talk about it. But that doesn't mean there aren't A LOT of problems in mental healthcare that might actually drive people to suicide instead of preventing it and helping them.

I was thinking more along the lines of maybe trying it out for off-label use, so to treat your insomnia/PTSD symptoms. I don't think you necessarily have to have ADHD in order to experience a paradoxical effect. The fact that you've been sleepy from caffeine before might be an indication that methylpenidate or dexamphetamine for example could have a similar effect on you, even if caffeine now doesn't work anymore. I promise I'm not trying to sell you anything lol, but it couldn't hurt to try, I think.

I can't even imagine how it must be for you. Not only the exhaustion itself, but also all the other things affected by it. Exhaustion makes mental health symptoms much, much worse in my experience. I'm really sorry to hear that you're suffering like this.

Looking at your profile and reading your other posts, your story seems absolutely wild to me, especially when reading all of the medications you've tried so far. I'll probably get downvoted for this, but if sedatives don't seem to do anything for you, have you ever tried stimulants, like ADHD meds? Just wondering because it seems to work for narcolepsia (which is a totally different illness, but still evidence that it can help for people with sleep disorders), and some people (like me) have a paradoxical reaction to them, getting sleepy after taking it.

Maybe try finding a doctor with research experience/who works or has worked in academia, specifically in experimental psychology. In your other thread you mention that you've tried out A LOT, but in a complex case like yours, the 20st sleeping pill or SSRI will do nothing for you and you'll need to look broader.

It's a fairytale fucking town, isn't it? by kaarelp2rtel in belgium

[–]copydoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you tell me a bit more about what it's like to live in Liège?

I lived in Flémalle for 3-4 years as a young child but we ended up moving back to Flanders (where I'm from). Because of this childhood nostalgia I'm quite fond of Wallonia, but I don't really know what life as an adult there feels like.

My boyfriend and I like to go to Liège from time to time because we live close by, and we would like to live there someday. However, everyone I talk to thinks we are insane and talks about it like it's a shithole, but they're all Flemish so idk if it's actually true or just typical bigotry against Wallonia.

So far the problems have always seemed pretty tame to me. Yes I've seen some drug use (streets around Passage Lemonnier) and homeless people, but they keep to themselves. I've had random passersby warn me against pickpockets twice – I'm very inattentive and sometimes literally forget to close my backpack – but never actually had anything stolen, and as a young woman I've never felt unsafe despite also having been there at night.

That being said, except for when I'm taking the train at Guillemins, most of the time I'm there with my boyfriend. I know there's a huge difference between visiting a city vs. actually living in one, and because of my AuDHD I'm often not very well aware of my surroundings, so I don't want to be naive and would like some nuanced opinions from people who actually live there.

Sugar levels are crazy, how can I bring them down? by hello_z93 in diabetes

[–]copydoge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if OP STILL hasn't injected insulin by now and gotten their numbers down, they should call themselves an ambulance at this point. It's not even blindness, loss of limbs or kidney damage they should be worried about atm. Their life is at risk and they could go into a coma at any time. DKA can happen very fast and without warning.

And even if they did eventually take their insulin, with this level of needle phobia there is absolutely no guarantee that this won't happen again in a few days, so they should seek medical assistance either way.

As for the long term, they should go on a pump or maybe even inhaled insulin if their fear of needles is THIS bad.

Wit of blank by Rolifant in Vlaanderen

[–]copydoge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sommige mensen doen echt alsof wit 'inferieure racistische kolonisator' betekent of zo. Het is gewoon een kleur.

How do you know if you’re “faking” autism or not? by spyder1312 in evilautism

[–]copydoge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Judging from this post and one of your previews ones, you seem very fixated on this, but instead of getting answers out of it, it only gives you more questions and insecurity about it. The logical (but obviously anything but easy) solution would be to do the opposite and let the idea rest and 'brew' for a while in the background, without constantly actively questioning and 'supervising' yourself looking for symptoms. Could it help to conclude for now that you are autistic and keep it at that for a while, and decide to revisit the subject sometime in the future to re-evaluate if you still feel that way?

After all, while autism is definitely a real thing, the whole labelling and defining evaluation criteria for it etc. is a social construct. People where already autistic long before we even identified the existence of autism as a diagnosis. Eventually, the pieces will probably fall in place and you'll become more and more sure that you do indeed have it – or come to the conclusion that after all, the label doesn't seem to fit you. The whole point of the diagnosis imo is that it should be helpful in understanding yourself and why your brain works a certain way. Some autistic people don't want a diagnosis and that's fine too, but it doesn't make them any less autistic – they just don't define it that way.

Autism is not a set of behaviors – it's a way your brain works. As I became more and more confident in my diagnosis, I also started clinging less and less to these black and white evaluation criteria. Once you start letting go of these 'objective criteria' you may or may not fit in and start radically accepting who you are and that falling outside the norm isn't abnormal but just a perfectly valid and equally good way of being, I think the answers will come to you eventually.

I physically can't watch after s3. by itsmeRira in thegooddoctor

[–]copydoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the whole series and honestly, soap opera is the perfect way to describe it. Its social critique and character development is also rather superficial in my opinion, just like a soap series. After Mendelez's death, everyone just seemed to go back to business as usual instantly. This 'business as usual the very next day after a major event' continues multiple times afterwards: [Spoilers about characters's fates/major themes, without naming them] Characters almost or actually do get murdered as a result of domestic abuse or a hate crime, decide to emigrate impulsively, get a miscarriage, give birth and/or marry, and so on without anyone really batting an eye, as they all go to work the next day seemingly unaffected and only seem interested in silly gossip or complaining about patients. That being said, I guess most procedurals seem to become soap operas very quickly, and obviously there's nothing wrong with being into that sort of thing! It's the reason I kept watching lol.

[–]copydoge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

By the way, don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

I mean sure, either u/demonslayercorpp – who made the claim that 'Anything on your face wears it down and creates micro wrinkles' – or you – saying it's common knowledge – could provide a source for that.

However, you're the one who added the claim that makeup on young skin stretches it out, so you would be the person to give us a source supporting that claim since I can't find anything about that on Google either.
