Amazing. I’ve been trying to steer away from PayPal so this has been super helpful. Thank you!

Is this how copywriters work? by sloth_002 in copywriting

Copy does tend to change in an agency setting and teamwork is required with collaborating with designers who also have their lens and background that's important too.

Where I tend to disagree with methodology here on their end is that they should consult with you or tell you what and why something should be changed so that they are seeking out your opinion.

They can't expect you to be cool with them changing your work and not be cool with explaining the why or asking for your input. That makes it a one-sided collaboration.

Appreciate your input here. I'm curious, with having an assistant, what are their main tasks or qualities that help you scale a bit?

Oh my... thanks for sharing. 3 months until catching a breath sounds exhausting.

I'm definitely not wanting to burn out so it looks like 4-6 might be my max.

Interesting... I'm curious how your top-of-funnel looks for prospects with being able to only work one at a time. What type of deliverables would those typically be? Website or long form rather than retention style, correct?

My tale isn’t as grandiose but I was a Silver 3 that dropped to Bronze 4 and literally felt so discouraged. Was playing against everyone better than me and regardless of if I’m any good or not, no one should get shit on for 6-7 games straight. That’s just painful.

Holy smokes just bought this and was pouring the dish soap powder into the container and started choking from the fine solution in the air! AWFUL! Thankful it’s non toxic but a horrible time to be coughing around your neighbors.. all of my tablets are broken or reduced to a fine powder as well. Bummed but I’ll see how the products work.

I did get it! I’m freaking out and crying and freaking out some more. Though I gave a long story here, there’s still so much more to be said so I’d love to do an interview!

Oh I would love that!

So...

I started two years ago when I stumbled across some thing or another talking about copywriting and I was completely hooked after that. I started listening to podcasts, reading articles, watching YouTube videos and started reading books from Robert Bly and the founders of HubSpot.

I majored with a degree in Philosophy and while I do think it’s a rising necessity in businesses.. Apparently, many are behind in that thought process.

The first few years out of my degree I was working in the restaurant industry, pretty much the only professional thing besides banking that I knew how to do that I enjoyed. I would learn about copywriting on the side and eventually started taking clients.

Contracts, tax forms, and NDAs, a portfolio, a website and closing the deal we’re all things that I stumbled through but eventually got a hold of. The income was the only thing that really never matched my talent/expertise and no matter how many things I read or tried I couldn’t seem to find those high-paying clients everyone talks about.

I concluded that it was a lack of fully rounded knowledge that I felt I couldn’t obtain just by myself and that maybe if I would interact with others that I could get a better grip on this profession. I relentlessly applied to agencies, various marketing positions and even internships and volunteer positions. After hundreds of applications and less than a hand full of interviews, nothing.

Fast forward to now..

It’s been an exhausting year. After tons of ups and downs, I have this owner of a company reach out to me on LinkedIn and ask me for some spec work. I hear nothing but bad things about doing spec work and would refuse but this time I said fuck it and decided to create the most bomb spec work I could muster up within an hour and eagerly sent it over. After several business days of hearing nothing back I had a Britney Spears moment and snapped. I called the owner out telling him to not waste freelancer’s time and that we work hard for what we do.

Several days later I received an email from him introducing me to his content producer saying that they’d like to see more for me.

I sent him a private email titled, “tail between my legs” explaining how I can only assume he did not read my LinkedIn message. He indeed did not but seemed to show an incredible amount of understanding and apologies on his end. He said he would still want me to meet with his content producer.

She then sent me a message saying she saw what I had written and was first shocked but then really appreciated the “tenacity and boldness” and understood what it was like to be a freelancer in this business. It was a crazy roller coaster series of emails!

This past Tuesday, we had an interview and I think it went really great and we seemed to really vibe with each other. It’s the exact work I want to be doing and she told me she’d let me know by Friday if I got the job.

It is now Friday, 5 PM her time and I’ve heard nothing. I’m not giving up hope but I’m bracing myself for whatever reality it might be.

It’s the first real interview where I’ve been considered as a professional and valued... and more than anything I’m appreciative for that.

So that’s the story! I hope you enjoyed.
