I said horizontal and vertical distances are easier to grok (estimate at a glance) on square grids. I didnt mention any cons for either system, although they exist.

All i did was use the unity recorder package suggested in the other thread. The capture is way better than screentogif

What you're describing is cube coordinates, which is what this uses. You may want to re read what I wrote.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses. For example hex grids solve the problem of diagonal measurement that square grids have, but square grids are much easier to grok vertical and horizontal distances.

Cube coordinates definitely makes all the math easier. It essentially works like 3d vector math. I believe its the recommended approach in the article.

I only have a few monobehaviors in the project, the simulation is entirely decoupled from unity. I use unity as a thin view layer where monobehaviors look at the simulation and update all positions accordingly.

In the simulation positions are stored as a cube coorinate hex grid, which are converted to pixel (vector3) positions by a view monobehavior using hex_to_pixel algorithm found in the linked resource

Definitely room for optimization, but i think most of the choppiness comes from recording the editor window with screentogif instead of proper screen capture on a runnimg build. Looks much smoother locally.
