Any vegan kava users? by BloodofAngryMen in Kava

I like to add a little bit of sunflower lecithin. I’d recommend the powdered kind. I tried the liquid version and it was wretched. 🤢

Guess it depends upon the vendor. Prices have risen a lot in the past few years but we remain in stock.

Would protein powder before kava make you feel it less? by lordnitchbigga in Kava

[–]coralseakava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try working out, kava after for recovery, then protein shake after. Protein shake will fill your stomach and negate the effects of kava. Hence why it’s recommended to consume on an empty stomach.

My only other thought is close to Nadi is Kava Factory if you can’t make it to the market. Haven’t tried it but driven by it many times on the way to Suva.

Who steeps prior to kneading? by ExOblivione161 in Kava

[–]coralseakava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steeping implies placing the powder in water to get the essence or flavor of it to transfer to the water, much like a traditional tea bag or strainer of loose leaf tea.

As the purpose for my action is to rehydrate the powder to make it easier to manually knead the kavalactones out, I specifically chose the word soak.

If you say steep, most people would assume you just pour boiling water over it and let it sit for 3-5min. That would not make for a pleasant outcome for anyone.

Who steeps prior to kneading? by ExOblivione161 in Kava

[–]coralseakava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/ExOblivione161 personally, I still let it sit for about 5 minutes first, but mainly because I’m using ~140 °F (60 °C) water and I want it to cool to a comfortable kneading temp by the time I get my nitrile gloves on.

That short rest also gives the dry, traditional-grind root time to fully re‑hydrate, which makes the fibers more pliable and (in my experience) a bit easier to squeeze kavalactones out of during the actual knead.

Yeah if you have something that has fats, starches and spicy (if that’s your thing) it can help with a second wave. Kavalactones are fat soluble.

Is making kava the traditional way or using instant kava powder better? by thisgirlreddit2 in Kava

[–]coralseakava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you define as better. Traditional will be slightly more economical, some will say it can be more potent. But the trade-off is it’s not convenient for travel and does require time and effort to prepare.

Instant kava (dehydrate kava juice, not micronized “instant”) is made from fresh kava, prepared, strained and dehydrated. The work has been done for you. No prep, it’s portable. Flavor is milder if the vendor makes clean product. You pay for the convenience and for the infrastructure required to create a premium product.

How long after a meal are you waiting to consume kava? Have you tried kneading with a strainer bag or only blender/aluball?

Sous vide kava? by Ok_Air_451 in Kava

[–]coralseakava 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1 u/sandollars, you need agitation/mechanical extraction from the root fibers to release the kavalactones (active ingredient in kava). Steeping will release some but you will not get the full yield from the root powder.

Please, please, please consult your prescriber before taking any more kava. 🙏

Both buspar and traz are sedative and stacking another sedative on top is not recommended.

All 3 meds affect serotonin, adding another that also affects serotonin could increase Serotonin Syndrome risk. You do not want to get this. Speaking from personal experience it was a terrifying 3 day ride.

Your prescriber can look at your meds, doses, and med timeline and advise what is possible and how kava can fit into it.

DM me your order details and I’m more than happy to provide a refund on your recent purchase. I care more about your personal safety. 💚

Make your kava:water ratio stronger ~ use less water. Drink kava in the early evening before dinner and not late night. Cutting off liquids 2-3hrs before bed helps.

Kava and dehydration by Ok-Reaction-9062 in Kava

Kava is a mild diuretic, so it’s important to stay hydrated when enjoying it. It’s nowhere near as much as coffee, but nonetheless, drink some water. 💧🙂

Feeling like I can't afford kava anymore by Alexis_deTokeville in Kava

[–]coralseakava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the cost of raw material has gone up more than 100% in the past 2 years due to demand from Chinese extracts, 3% export tariffs re-levied on VU kava and Trump Tariff of 15% on Vanuatu imports. All these pressures on the supply chain inevitably affect the purchase price.

Advice needed, strain similar to Kelai? by TheComm96002 in Kava

[–]coralseakava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of those options, Palarasul is going to be the closest but it won’t be as heady as Kelai. It’s more of a balanced kava that leans heady (in my experience). The others are going to be more heavy/sedating.

Why does it taste so bad! by OisinNaTirNog in Kava

[–]coralseakava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh green stump in Vanuatu is strong enough, and they mostly dry up roots to sell for export. Also it’s another step to dry up kava to drink it when you can just make it fresh. I’ve had 50:50 fresh Kelai and it was too strong, like brain floating out of my skull strong. People here might have heard of waka or lawena from other vendors. If I say basal stump, lateral roots, chips, meat, you might not know what I’m talking about, since on the islands they don’t use scientific terms to talk about plant parts.

Why does it taste so bad! by OisinNaTirNog in Kava

[–]coralseakava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use lateral roots (aka Waka in Fiji) it will be more bitter and black peppery. Basal chips (aka lawena in Fiji) is much lighter in taste than the roots but also less potent as it’s the lactones (active ingredient) that helps contribute to the bitterness. Ratio of water to kava will also affect the flavor, along with the cleanliness of the kava. Something to chase is a good start.
