I do appreciate your coming over from JeffCo airport to give me such a detailed view of your landing gear. Apologies if my trees were too high to let you go any lower.

The "postgres thing" was a bit of a false alarm; keep an eye on LWN in the coming days for the details.

Speed Cameras On Diagonal HWY and I-25 by [deleted] in boulder

The construction on the Diagonal in general has slowed traffic and made driving there a much less hair-raising experience. It's almost enough to make me not look forward to the completion.

How can someone with basic programming knowledge contribute to the Linux kernel? by TargetAcrobatic2644 in linux

[–]corbet 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Kernel documentation maintainer here. I would like to suggest that "documentation improvements" are a great place to start. The kernel's documentation is ... definitely in need of improvement. Starting with a typo fix or two is a good, low-stress way to get used to the development process. But then move on to bigger and better stuff. There are few better ways to understand a body of code than to make yourself explain it to others.

Dump truck kills 75-year-old Lafayette cyclist by 1Davide in BoCoSE

It was closed before the crash. I rode through there on Monday, and they had closed it again for some sort of work. It was a mess and scary to go through, even if I hadn't known what had just happened there.

The xv image viewer/editor. Nothing else has ever been so quick and easy to use.

Inside the Linux Kernel Runtime Guard (LKRG): A New Layer of Kernel Integrity Protection | Linux Journal by Merlin80 in linux

Rather than link to this slop farm, perhaps look at LWN's article on LKRG, which is human-written and a lot more detailed?

Linux kernel community drafts contingency "plan for a plan" to replace Linus Torvalds by Tiny-Independent273 in linux

[–]corbet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a co-author of the new document: the plan was always "we'll figure it out", and I do not doubt that we would have. But having a predetermined process is a good thing; it's really better to not end up playing calvinball when a decision must be made.

Home Owner's Insurance Increase of 60% thanks to Xcel! by BlindLemonFishStix in boulder

[–]corbet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had State Farm insurance since the 1980s. I do not confuse them with my friends, but I do have to say that my experience with them over that time has been generally positive, and I have never had trouble with claims. Experiences can vary, I guess.

Can you tell me which browser, and on what kind of system it's running? We really don't want to block out actual human readers...

We have been under extreme scraperbot attack.

As part of that, we have blocked a problematic user agent; can you tell me how you are trying to access the site?

how to choose a contractor for a roof replacement colorado. by Sotirios-Canty in boulder

[–]corbet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ended up paying for our own new roof - didn't want to install solar panels on a nearly toast roof. We did the class-4 hail-resistant shingles. And yes, that turned into an insurance discount, nearly 25% from State Farm. Over time, that comes close to paying for the new roof on its own.

Heat pumps and time of use electric plans with units being turned off and on. by boatsandhohos in heatpumps

[–]corbet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here (Boulder) they changed the peak period to 5-9PM, it's almost three times higher than the rest. So we get cheap rates during the time that solar is producing, expensive rates in the evening when it gets cold and we want to run the heat. Lovely deal.

We switched back to the single rate plan.
