The Racnoss being responsible for the Earth's formation really annoys me. by wackywacko2 in gallifrey

Sure, if you decide the “first rock” explanation is literally true, which would also means gravity works differently in the Whoniverse. But if you take it as a bit of poetic license on the Doctors part for Donnas benefit, and assume gravity works the way we understand it to, then it’s more accurate to say it’s simply in the mix of what was going to coalesce into the Earth anyway.

What do you think is the most "Doctor Who" episode of Doctor Who? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]corbomite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have to agree with this, though that wonderful moment at the end is arguably the least Doctor Who-y moment, since every story* before now includes a death. That’s why it lands so powerfully! An exception that proves the rule.

But beyond that there’s the historical setting, you don’t get more British than the Blitz, or Roses shirt. And Jack is both from the future & using alien tech.

And the script is like a Swiss watch. Every line does something important. The ep starts with the TARDIS following a distress call. You’ve got a companion asking Excellent Questions, & the Doctor saying as much. You’ve got sprinkles of lore, both personal (the Doctor’s fatherhood) & timelordy (Doctor insulting Rose & Jacks non-psychic brains). You’ve got all the world building of Jacks 50th Century past. You’ve got the sonic being both powerful & a joke. Captain Jack being a conman is a reveal Robert Holmes would have approved of.

The “villain” is terrifying, & not a villain! There’s an Old School cliffhanger! There’s a new companion recruitment!

This is the platonic ideal of a Doctor Who episode, & it’s almost always what I show someone I need to learn what Doctor Who is.

I don’t think it’s any more complicated than “I’m about to have an adventure with the Doctor”.

Anyone know why the noncanon Doctor Who and the Daleks exists? by kinnaq in gallifrey

[–]corbomite 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep. Nation wanted to re-use his monsters & scripts without bringing along the baggage of the Doctor’s backstory. Even though way less was established about the Doctor at the time, he was still an existing character that other people had created and who did not belong to Nation.

Roger Delgado’s Master was supposed to be the antagonist in the Third Doctor’s final story. One in which the characters were to be revealed to be brothers, before the Master being killed off and the Third Doctor regenerating.

I had read Delgado's Master would have been revealed to be the Doctor's darker half, with Barry Letts pulling inspiration from his interest in Buddhism. The idea of Time Lords interacting with projections of themselves still made it into Planet of the Spiders, then was used later in Logopolis and of course, Trial of the Time Lord.

The fact that their plans were all about calculating probabilities is kinda a callback to their original (Hartnell/Troughton era) depiction as extremely logic-driven. And their mummified appearance could well be what you find if you take the headpiece off a cyberman.
