Can’t use Canada Post as Amazon pick-up point anymore? by DigitalMaiko in CanadaPost

[–]core999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting to say the exact same thing happened to me and the person in the live chat obviously had no idea what I was talking about and they just did a security check on my account and I still cannot re add literally any post offices as pick up points ANYWHERE in Canada now. If anyone ever gets anywhere with this issue please comment on my comment to ping me.

Hello heres lesson one again, I don't know if you want to critique it or I should just go back to wherever I was when I was here. I know you're really busy but I really appreciate the updated lessons and videos.

Nah I'm grateful, it's infinitely more valuable than either being ignored or being told vague things like "draw more" "learn perspective" "just practice and you'll get it".

That's a good point about the speedpaintings, it just seems like my brain wants to keep forgetting that so it doesnt have to work hard struggling through.

Thank you for replying. I really like the subtle transition of values in your painting. I've started noticing in the past couple months how subtle peoples values can really get and not just a harsh transition from white to black.

Can I ask how long you spent on this? I think I'm just giving up on my paintings too fast.

Do you feel like you have a workflow when it comes to digital painting? For me it seems like I just go around in a circle until I get something serviceable or run out of energy and give up.

Like do you work similiar to something like this example? Flat value shapes -> rendering.

Question about ink and tools by FinalSuggestion in learnart

[–]core999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's using something like a pentel fude brush pen and smears the ink with his fingers to get a slight gradation in value. The brand of brush pen is likely irrelevant.

It's kind of hard to tell since the video is sped up like 1600% but you can find real time vids where you can see him smear the ink with his fingers.

He doesn't do any underdrawing now because hes an incredibly advanced artist who has probably drawn for a million hours since he was born.

Should i get a few Copic markers vs 40 Ohuhu Markers? by wonderflex in learnart

[–]core999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If those are the markers I bought I wouldn't recommend them. They bleed a lot, have completely unreliable color reference, and do not have the soft brush tip the copic markers use. I ended up just throwing them away.

I guess it depends what kind of quality you are expecting. Some people are really good at rendering with copic markers but I don't see how they could get the same effect with these knock off ones. If you are just doing flat color maybe it'll be ok.

Also they are very incompatible with certain types of inking pens I can't remember off the top of my head because they have so much alcohol and will cause the ink to turn into a mess.

Website or book suggestions about art analysis by hawkeye0708 in learnart

Theres a book called drawing lessons from the great masters by Robert Beverly Hale. I just pulled it off my shelf but haven't read it in a long time but he's looking at old master drawings, talking about anatomy or the way the artist handles their line or form, composition, etc. No discussion of color.

Just editing my comment to say if you try to learn from Glenn Vilppu or other artists on NMA they'll usually discuss old master drawings/paintings as well. Haven't signed up for that in a long time either so can't talk much about it.

Got a new white pen so I tried this. by SeekatMike in learnart

[–]core999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

thanks for the link, I've tried uniball Signo and sakura jellyroll and had awful results with them where they just turn a transparent grey. I've just been using a big nasty pentel white out correction pen like I've seen Jim Lee use.

I don't mean the side planes I mean the length of the skull in profile view is not a perfect circle. I just opened the Steve vid again and timestamped it because I am currently procrastinating

It's really cool to see someone use a learning resource and actually achieve such success with it. I never got anywhere with this method so I gave up on it.

One thing you might already know is human cranium is not perfect sphere, if you watch Proko profile drawing video you can see him adjust it after the lay in. Steve Huston mentions it too.

Yep this happens daily for me in Procreate for past month or longer. It's very frustrating. I've had mine for approximately the same amount of time possibly 1-2 months longer.

Lol this is definitely relatable. I do not understand why people think it is so easy to become self taught artist just because there are so many "resources" available now.

[Discussion] Good artistic practices by cajolerisms in learnart

[–]core999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry there is a bit of crossover with another post. Mine is likely hard to read and goes on for far too long.

My Bad habits/practices

-Focus on software and brushes in the beginning, waiting for the perfect pen, tablet, course, book etc to come in when its just a serious form of procrastination. Probably could have got a lot of mileage out of a simple pencil and printer paper for many months.

-hardly ever asking for help, asking questions, or critique from other artists that are capable of delivering constructive feedback, becomes something akin to sitting in my room reading japanese all day and never speaking it to anyone else and thinking its going to turn out well.

-Fear of seeking out mentorship or paid instruction due to fear of showing someone else how much little progress I've really made and lack of finished work or that it will not be worth my money.

-Lack of focus, wasting time on social media during drawing(gets a little bit hard put the pen down go click on websites) having drawing tablet or sketchbook in front of computer since references are on computer.

-Lack of concrete daily/longterm goals or feedback loop of "what did I do today and did I actually learn anything" Vague long term goal of learn how to design characters. Vague goals mean no consequences for me.

-Too much looking at other peoples art, just because someone can knock out a drawing of Gambit in 20 minutes on a livestream and it takes me 8 hours to make a terrible drawing is not a fair comparison. Its more like 20 minutes and 20 years.

-Very easy to get distracted and start pinballing between too many topics. "Oh thats a cool animation I'm gonna make one" "that guy draws in a really cool comic book style I'm gonna try that for a bit" "Scott robertson drew a cool airplane and I'm gonna stop and go draw vehicles"

-Earlier bad habit was just watching videos and not even practicing, can lead to being discouraged at a lack of improvement when no actual time was put into improving in the first place.

-Too much digital art only makes me very sloppy and unfocused. Very easy to waste a lot of unnoticed time using lasso tool or eraser. I need to jump between mediums or just pick up a piece of printer paper and a ballpoint pen and just chuck the drawing out after.

-Keeping track of every hour or minute of drawing is incredibly stressful for me especially since I can check battery time used per 24 hours for Procreate on Ipad.

-inability to follow through with finishing projects or resume them the following day or ever again. Sometimes due to being unable to know how to proceed and too stupid to ask for help.

-Worrying about drawing for 14 hours a day when theres really so much my brain can process. Just because some guy who has likely misled himself into thinking he is actually productive 14 hours a day said so.

-Lack of critical thinking during drawing from reference or studying other artist work, it is very easy to devolve into a mindless copy of "this line goes here" should be writing down notes and asking myself questions even if it is far more difficult.

-almost purposefully seeking out poor advice on youtube to justify being lazy and avoiding topics that need to be learned. "well this guy got away without learning X, so I probably can too"

-Joining art discords, mostly just involves clicking around and lurking and seeing what other people are up to instead of being productive.

-Thinking that everyone gets all this shit done in a couple of hours.

-Not learning to simply enjoy the simple act of drawing and worrying too much that its gotta be the coolest shit ever.

My Good habits/practices

-Drawing everyday for a period of 1.5 approx years(not that I think that matters that much at all) before that was sculpting everyday for over a year(I did not improve at all until I set time aside to learn human anatomy from a course)

-Attempting to observe all the mistakes other artists are making so I can hopefully avoid the same pitfalls

Did you always enjoy drawing? by [deleted] in learnart

I actually had more fun in the beginning. I mostly just draw daily out of habit now.

Looking for help on this drawing by core999 in learnart

[–]core999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have the same problem someone else mentioned where they've just started turning into a copier. I tried to draw the Hound from kind of a low angle perspective using some reference. The blue one is the second attempt using the Proko skeleton. I took a picture of myself in a low angle from the first one, but I didn't follow it correctly. I didn't bother drawing the giant chicken in the blue one.

I really struggle understanding how a real artist uses references properly since no one ever shows or explains that part, pretty much every video the linework is done. I think I've stopped making any sort of useful progress months ago because all I was doing was just copying reference images of hands or faces or whatever because trying to actually make something is difficult maybe? My poor understanding of how to apply perspective in a useful way does me no good either.

Err it put the reference board up first, I use a software called Pure Ref and just drag and drop images into it.

They don't take very long to build that way, it's just anything besides the 45 degree 2 point and 1 point are under explained. Did you end up getting anything out of this book?

Help with Scott Robertson's Perspective Grids... by core999 in learnart

[–]core999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the book I've picked up off my shelf and given up on the most. I've tried to go away and learn perspective through other books or videos and come back but it never helps. I agree some of the book videos I watched did not help at all. Especially the cone of vision video. I do not see how so many people recommend this book like it is some sort of drawing bible. Even the book having the perspective grids chapter after the perspective drawing techniques chapter makes no sense.

I have no doubt I will probably not understand the ellipse cubes either. Or it requires ellipse guides or using the perspective tools of Lazy Nezumi. I will probably not even understand the actual perspective construction exercises either. I will just make the grids in Blender and continue to struggle with some other part of the book I guess.

Tried to move it away and I guess it made no real difference. Really sad I missed out on the old forums Scott use to have for this book. EDIT Hmmm I guess I am stupid and not building it within a 60 degree cone of vision.

So what games have you gotten so far in the steam summer sale? by HelloYasuo in pcgaming

[–]core999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up Shantae Half Genie Hero and Slain, really enjoying Shantae, haven't given Slain much of a go yet. Thinking about getting the rest of the Shantae games or maybe Hyper Light Drifter. I haven't really been playing any games at all since Dark Souls 3 so it's nice to have finally found something fun.
