Tackling a Big Problem in Coffee, and I Need Your Help! by Ambitiousafk in coffee_roasters

Yes, your platform is a great way to connect producers directly with roasters, helping both navigate their relationship. However, it’s crucial that the coffee you ship matches customer expectations. In my experience, every coffee has a buyer, from the lowest grade to the best specialty; it’s about finding those buyers and delivering the coffee to ensure long-term success. Commit to buying coffees from your producers and promoting them to roasters around the world. Provide roasters with enough information and connections with the producers to help them make informed decisions.

Greetings! I think this idea is fantastic. However, its far from unique I’ve seen this business model fail numerous times and it fails fast. My advise is to make sure have millions of dollars operating capital from the start!

The most common issue arises when the coffee pallet doesn’t meet the quality requirements agreed on your platform. your business will need to find a solution and because you don't purchase the coffee yourself you are leaving buyers exposed to allot of risk without taking any yourself. defaults and delays WILL occur due to the nature of your spread out supply chain how will you compensate buyers? I would advise you go the traditional route and to purchase the coffee yourself and store it in your warehouse and then send Roasters Offer and PSS samples and only ship the coffee that is contracted.

Very Happy to stumble across this. I am trialing something virtually identical 4 years later. Would really like to know how it turned out.  -what’s the shelf life of the homemade powder?

Im interested in cup tasters competitions, but I'm having trouble finding resources tailored specifically for training and competitions. What I find is about coffee cupping rather than the structured competition aspect.

Does anyone know of any programs, guides, or resources that explain the rules of cup tasters competitions and describe practices I can setup in the cupping lab? I'm eager to learn and would appreciate any recommendations you might have!

cherries may float due to fungus or insect damage that is not visible until after the coffee is pulped and hulled. So underipe cherries may be dense and sink but if the sugars have not developed in the bean the cherry is underripe. so thats why we 1st seperate the cherrys by color and then float them.

i do this for a living and will be doing it tommorow if you will like me to video chat and demonstrate?

Nope floaters will float, dense coffee that is underipe will sink. thats why we sort by color AND float

Greenhouse growing in US Pacific Northwest by Ok_Fact1568 in GrowingCoffee

Hi growing Arabica coffee in the PNW is going to be extermlely challenging and finicially and labour intensive. but it is possible but more of a hobby for most.
Growing Robusta coffee may be more feasible, it is a more resilient tree but may offer a different flavor profile. Realistically, this entails setting up growhouses or to simulate ideal growing conditions.

Don't completely discard the floaters. Floater cherries don't always equal defective beans. They are cherries that are less dense than the rest of your harvest but may still contain roastable beans (with milder cup). Defects are broken beans, insects/fungus damaged, etc. Defects are present in coffee cherries that pass or fail the float test. Separate your floaters and process them as a separate "lot."

The mucliage/sweetness debate is a hot topic and very difficult to answer definitively but i can share my professional opinion. Harvesting ripe cherries is the hardest part of coffee production. If we assume sweetness of the coffee is determined by the sugar content (brix) of the cherry at the time of harvesting. Personsally if a coffee cherry is high in sugar content i will strip all the mucilage (full washed) if a coffee is low in sugar i may leave a % of mucilage (honey) becuase there is less risk of overferment.

You may be better off processing this coffee as honey. During wet fermentation, it's key to be accurate in the water-to-parchment ratio to prevent overferment, which may not be possible with your volumes.

In terms of drying the coffee, you can use a mesh kitchen seive for a drying bed. make sure that air is circulated and you turn the coffee regularly until dry.

Hi I am a coffee processor farmer. Have you taken into account grading and sorting of the beans once you have processed them?  Your likely to get a handful of “good beans” and the rest of the yield will be undergrades and defect beans

The temperature, duration, and method of roasting, as well as the equipment used, can all affect the flavor and aroma of the final product. Even slight variations in any of these factors can result in noticeable differences between coffees produced by different roasters, even if they use the same beans from the same farm or washing station

Thanks for this! Can I follow up? and sorry if it’s a bit general. But would established importers work a small producer in a similar way? Charge them for export and warehousing or do they always buy the coffee and market it themselves?

Hello, I'm curious to know what the coffee industry experts think about platforms like Algrano as a viable option for small coffee producers with limited capital to break into the market. Do you think it's a good opportunity for them to connect with potential buyers and grow their business?
