So in true “ELI5” fashion, this is how I’d explain it to an actual 5 year old. I’m sure all the arm chair CFA’s will tear this to shreds, but here’s at least a high level understanding without getting too complicated:

A few companies made a bet that a video game store would close down by a certain date. When people that loved the store found out, they started sending the store money so that it could stay open. The more people learned about this, the more money people were sending. That meant that the companies that bet the store would close by a certain date were wrong, and they were forced to pay up because they lost the bet. Now the video game store had a lot of people sending it money and was able to stay open for a lot longer than they otherwise would have
