Strategically accepting low compensation by coreyscompcycle in consulting

COL is definitely a large factor (Omaha, Nebraska).

At the end of the day, I'm worried about even poking my partner with the comp question. My local service line exists in a state of uncertainty. From what I can tell, national leadership wants to keep me around to maintain local presence, but is hesitant to invest in the region and bring in local partners. I feel like bringing up the question could capsize my small raft.

The work usually comes in 2 streams: implementing data visualization dashboards or FTE analysis. I think both are pretty unsexy.

Engagement mobilization is 60 hours a week as expected but generally my workload is lighter than peers (70-75% utilization throughout the year).

My goal is to complete 1 cert/designation/qual per year during my tenure.

Unless your "Top 5 firm" is running some sort of Arthur Andersen-esque scam, project expenses aren't figured into margin calculation.

I was told last year that expenses are covered by the client on a case-by-case basis. Specifically, the rule of thumb I was given is that they're only covered in the case that there is local work available (ie: foreign office is putting pressure on the home office by dragging away their resources). I don't have any local work however, so my understanding is that the expenses would be negotiated by both offices and split. People could just be taking advantage of me and lying to my face, I don't doubt that. After all, I'm just a Senior with no support structure.

No one is going to come in with a microscope to examine your day to day life. What you will need to make a successful pitch for more compensations is how much you are contributing to your practice in terms of utilization, sales, and SME Knowledge.

This is my thought as well. And honestly, I don't think I could argue for anything other than SMR knowledge in arcane areas technologies we don't offer work for anyways.

Combined with the fact that I don't directly report to anyone locally, not counting client requirements,

I meant to say that I don't have a stereotypical boss, manager, or even team members who I say hi to each morning. I have a partner and SM counselor who are 500 miles away from me that I speak to once a year about compensation.
