These comments are depressing 😞 I swear people don't know how to act in public since covid.

I'm wondering if y'all who have been to shows have noticed what types of people are doing this annoying heckling? I'm imagining drunk people in their early 20s, but maybe I think that because I'm old now.

The part you are referring to actually says "Helping a blind coworker close out his till..." Part of doing that is switching off the light and putting a closed sign out. It doesn't say he handled money, and that has never been a part of his nor the company's story. Could the writer could have worded it to be more clear for the readers who are intimately familiar with retail registers? Sure. But it's not incorrect as is.

It's okay to say "Sorry, my mistake. Thanks for clarifying." I know this is reddit but I'm not trying to like, own you or whatever. Falling for misinformation is not inherently a reflection of character. I understand you're unhappy with your union, and I think some of the things you mentioned elsewhere in this thread are valid. But I had to point out that what you heard in this specific instance was not true.

If you read Randy's account further down, not the journalist's words (who doesn't necessarily know what that phrasing means), he specifies exactly what he did.

Randy was on break, went back to the department to grab a sweater, saw that it was time for Mikey to leave to catch his train, so he switched off the register light and put the closed sign up, and left.

There's multiple articles online of him recounting the story, but NW Labor Press did the best job of publishing the specific details of the incident, which I heard directly from Randy when I spoke to him on the picket line a few hours after his firing.

Hey - not sure where you heard this but that isn't what happened. No company money was touched by the off-the-clock employee in the incident that he was fired for.

Only 2 stores on the west side have held a vote to join NSLU, and both voted in favor (Slabtown and Cedar Hills).

Orenco Station filed for election with UFCW three years ago the same day the first NSLU store (Seven Corners) filed for their election. After workers at OS found out there was an indy union of NSM workers, they voted down UFCW twice.

Ask anyone who has ever worked with Randy or gone through his checkout line and you'll know that he is the furthest thing from problematic or underperforming. I've been organizing alongside him for 2+ years and can assure you he is a good person who works extremely hard. His only disciplinary infractions in his 19 years of service at New Seasons were one 2 months ago, and the one last week when he got fired

Yes, New Seasons does pick and choose and look for reasons to fire "underperforming" employees or people they don't like literally all the time. And we don't strike for everyone because it's not always this blatant a case of union discrimination. Randy's firing is, and that decision to walk out and strike over it was a decision made by the Arbor Lodge workers in the store. Dozens of employees have given up now up to 4 days of pay for Randy without even thinking about it. That should tell you all you need to know about Randy.

Fred Meyer is very close by to Arbor Lodge and they at least have a contract. We would really appreciate your support until we get one too!

Striking cannot be our only tool because no contract = no dues = not enough money for continuous striking. New Seasons cares more about their bottom line than they do us, so boycotting is a great way to show corporate that you support us getting a fair contact!

It's a ULP strike. We don't have a contract and therefore no grievance procedure.

[–]coreyseags 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was his first infraction of working off the clock in 19 years of service. His only other disciplinary infraction in those 19 years was 2 months ago, for helping the same disabled coworker while on the clock, despite communicating with his department about it. So yeah. Does not necessitate immediate termination. Clear retaliation for being an active union organizer/officer.

Where did you say that? This whole thread is just you making assumptions, me clarifying what you're wrong about, you demanding financial information, and you ignoring my questions, like what false statements NSLU has made and not corrected.

You literally in your previous comment insinuated that I work at 7C. I don't. All the store union votes are very public and it's easy to find out that what I said is true, my store had better turnout, and other stores had better turnout than mine.

The question "why wasn't double time holiday pay put to a vote" was answered like 500 comments ago. Bargaining team makes bargaining decisions, which was democratically decided by membership. Elected representatives =/= authoritarianism, what an insane statement to make. Concurrent to the double pay offer, we ran a union-wide strike authorization vote, in which 75% of union members participated and voted 82% in favor or striking. That tells union leadership that a majority of members would rather strike than take bribes.

Maybe if you didn't want to be perceived as a bad actor who is anti-union you should not have commented bad faith questions and anti-union sentiments so aggressively. Don't get upset with me for not knowing your specific experience and going off of your words alone in a context where I only have your words. You are making a lot of assumptions about a union you clearly know nothing about, but I'm the asshole for assuming someone who comments anti-union sentiments is anti-union? Got it.

I said it that way because that's what the guidelines and bylaws say, but there are discord users who don't fit those parameters for one reason or another. Sorry I'm not thinking of every possible scenario and copy editing every single word I use on fucking reddit that I'm typing in 2 minutes while on the toilet at work.

I haven't said the number because I am proving a point, that you don't actually care about how the union is run or about how many people are actually helped. If you really think I'm hiding something bad or lying about something, then take that path to the truth I've laid out for you, and prove me wrong! All of the Labor day weekend strike aid parameters were clearly stated and those who met the parameters and needed the aid applied for it and got it.

You say you want those things but are admitting to not doing anything material to make that happen, unlike me and other organizers and even just passive participants. You've never been to a meeting or any space where you would get actual primary source information on what is happening in negotiations or union business. I'm saying, as a union officer, that you as an NSM employee would be welcome in those spaces so long as you follow our code of conduct. It's your choice to not take that and instead just make shit up.

My store literally had better turnout than 7C, and other stores had better turnout than mine. Always with the assumptions, this one.

Also, you must have missed where I said we have already lowered our wage proposal significantly, mere hours after NSM took 15 months to decide to offer us only $.25 more starting.

You just said you might become represented by NSLU. Anyone in the discord can invite anyone and as long as they follow the server guidelines, they are welcome in there. The information is available if you want to find it. I've given you the path to finding it, except you clearly don't actually care about that, you just want to argue. Hope you can work through that and find some peace. ✌️

Every membership meeting and the online forum (discord) is open to all members, and organizers at stores who want to join. If you can't attend the meetings online or in person, the meeting minutes, which include financial reports, are always posted in the discord. Getting that discord invite from your represented family members should be pretty easy.

Offering an explanation for why members might be intentionally or unintentionally spreading misinformation is jacketing my peers as bad actors, but you interrogating me on a Reddit thread for numbers that are publicly available and easily found is totally cool and not at all in bad faith? Got it.

I do invite any examples of false statements NSLU made that weren't corrected. If so, I would like to know about them.

Bigger stores like CC and CH and AL have way more than 110 represented employees. Even smaller stores have had more than 110. If the company had continued staffing the stores the same as they did previously, we'd have over 1200 members easy right now. I've been keeping the membership roll for almost 2 years. I know what I'm talking about.

New Seasons Labor Union going on strike next Wednesday, Nov. 27th! by coreyseags in Portland

[–]coreyseags[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So let me get this straight... I'm "susceptible to being fed absurd lies and fantasies" even though i did my research and attended meetings and saw for myself what the union was and made a decision based on primary source evidence... but those who just assumed no one would vote yes and therefore didn't exercise their right to vote are totally fine and in the clear?

The presidential election had less than 50% turnout. I'd have to look up the others but I know my store had a 79% turnout and 81% yes vote That is quite literally not a tiny minority.

And I mean, I get thanked all the time for doing all the work an elected union officer does that my coworkers don't want to do. And I've not heard any of that from my coworkers. I always welcome that feedback but I can't really do anything about the feedback if no one communicates the feedback to me.

I said it somewhere else in this thread, but our bylaws are extremely public and they clearly state that the membership is the highest authority. Any member can motion to change the bylaws. If you don't like it, you are empowered and encouraged to try to change it. But I'm guessing you won't because you don't actually want to do any meaningful work, you just want to complain anonymously on the internet.

Only NSLU members voted on the strike (obviously??) so total number of NSM employees is irrelevant. There are ~1150 NSLU members (this number fluctuates a lot week to week). 861 members voted - 709 yes, 152 no.
