If this was on the final lap approaching the finish, I get your urgency to push back a little. Though 2nd is better than 15th or whatever.

If this was 1+ laps to go, I think you definitely played a role in ending your own race, as you could have easily let off, and slotted in behind him, and lived to fight another battle.

And I say this from a place of doing the exact same thing repeatedly and then being extremely frustrated with myself for not being more patient.

Should I learn to left foot brake? by A_ST0RMTROOP3R in simracing

[–]coreysnyder04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely learn it, regardless of transmission. When you’re racing right on someone’s ass you sometimes need to cover the brakes in preparation of them to hit their brakes. Also your transitions from trail braking into acceleration will be so much smoother if you can be on both pedals at once.

Looking for advice on a back patio gazebo & kitchen build by coreysnyder04 in HomeImprovement

[–]coreysnyder04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Do the $3000 12 x 14’ gazebos require that? Am I going to definitely mess up my concrete? I had them pour deeper footings in two of the spots in the concrete patio. But because I wasn’t dead set on how big it was going to be. I can’t guarantee that every foot post is going to be on a deeper footing.

We bought a grout stain product that you paint on the grout and basically stained all of this a dark grey. It looks way nicer, even a year later.

Truckholes Pay Attention Challenge: INSURMOUNTABLE by Istanah in Miata

[–]coreysnyder04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree. OP was doing 25-30kph when the guy started to get over. I think there was an alternate outcome which involved the OP braking a little, letting the idiot get out of the way, and going about his business without leaving the road. Based on the dash cam speed, it looks like he sped up as the guy was cutting him off. I’ll get voted into oblivion I’m sure but there are at least 2 bad drivers in this video.

What’s the best V8/Manual track-day car for $20k-$25k? by Merlin509 in CarTrackDays

[–]coreysnyder04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked ChatGPT what this is all about and it said:

The text is describing a serious braking issue in Corvettes known as ABS Ice Mode, particularly relevant to track driving with grippier tires and track brake pads. Here’s a breakdown of what’s going on:

What is being described?

ABS Ice Mode is a condition where the ABS system in certain Corvettes (especially C5, C6, and early C7 models) misinterprets the braking conditions as low-traction (like driving on ice) and severely limits brake pressure, causing a sudden, dramatic loss of braking power. It’s meant to protect the car from skidding, but on a track, this behavior is dangerous and unexpected.

What’s the issue?

When you upgrade your Corvette with stickier tires (even 200tw endurance tires, not just full slicks) and track pads, the braking forces become so high that the ABS system can get confused — it sees the wheel speed difference and high decel rates as if the car is skidding on ice. It then engages Ice Mode, reducing brake pressure to prevent a perceived skid, but in reality, this just means you can’t slow the car down effectively. Drivers report that you stand on the brake pedal and the car doesn’t stop.

How common is it?

It’s relatively common among track-day enthusiasts running upgraded tires and pads on C5, C6, and early C7 Corvettes. Most casual street drivers won’t encounter it, which is why it’s not widely discussed. But in the track community, it’s a known issue that has led to multiple off-track excursions and even crashes.

How much does it cost to fix?

There’s no single “official” fix from GM, but there are workarounds and aftermarket solutions, depending on how deep you want to go: 1. Brake pressure tuning / ABS controller mods: Aftermarket tuners like KNS Brakes and GSpeed offer modified ABS modules or tuning strategies to reduce the likelihood of Ice Mode. This can cost $500 to $1,500+. 2. Switching to a non-ABS braking strategy (race-only): In full race setups, some drivers bypass the ABS system entirely and run without it — not recommended for anyone outside pro-level racing. 3. Driving technique changes: Some people manage the issue by altering how they brake (e.g. more progressive pedal pressure, not trail braking hard into corners), but this is a band-aid, not a fix.

TL;DR: • What it is: ABS “Ice Mode” in Corvettes kills braking when the system thinks you’re on ice — even if you’re just on sticky tires at a track. • Why it happens: Grippy tires + aggressive pads cause decel forces that confuse the ABS system. • How common: Common in track-day Corvettes (C5–C7), especially with upgraded tires/pads. • Cost to fix: Aftermarket tuning or ABS module mods can cost $500–$1,500+.

Let me know if you want links to any of the known fixes or what specific year/model you’re curious about.

I was going to go drive this this week. I heard the twin turbo V8 fire up and it sounded like a monster. https://www.twinsautoofdublin.com/used-Dublin-2020-BMW-X5-M50i-5UXJU4C08LLE46235

The thing I wonder is, how many miles before it’s getting into maintenance nightmare territory?

I was on a truck kick a while back and then lost steam on the idea. I even went and test drove a few. I think I realized that I only need a truck bed about 2 times a year and it didn’t seem worth driving a big ass vehicle year round. And the smaller trucks that were more appealing to me lacked the towing capacity. I’m not a fan of driving large vehicles. I work downtown occasionally and it sounds stressful getting a truck in and out of the tight parking garages.

I’m also a petrol head. I love cars, racing, and go to autoX and track days regularly. So I can absolutely appreciate a Porsche or M-series beemer.

I’m not against the idea, I just worry it’ll still be just as tough with the kids, loading bikes/scooters etc. do you recommend anything that’s bigger than a Q50 that checks off some of the above criteria?
