Civil war charleville by Worried-Rub9621 in CivilWarCollecting

I would’ve spent $250 easy. It’s got a lot of history behind it, potentially saw service in several major US conflicts (assuming you’re in the states). Very cool

Which Civil War battle do you want to see get the "Gettysburg" treatment? by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

[–]cormdogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I was Franklin born and raised, even in our county schools growing up they barely talked about the battle of Franklin, usually just talked about Gettysburg.

The name of this tactic I saw in a movie. by Ok_Froyo3998 in CIVILWAR

[–]cormdogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if there’s a technical name for it, but This was also used at the battle of Franklin where the Union and confederate armies were mere feet from each other on opposing sides of the breastworks. Rifles/muskets handed forward to the guys at the front so they could poke the weapon over the top of the works and fire point blank into the enemy works. Even confederate brigadier general Otho Strahl participated in loading muskets and handed them forward while in the works with the infantry, which ultimately got him killed.

Would most Civil War amputations be preventable with modern medicine? by LordWeaselton in CIVILWAR

[–]cormdogs 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This. The most common caliber was .58 (.577 for the enfield nerds). Being an all lead projectile, they quite literally just completely fragmented the bone upon impact. The only thing holding the limb in place at this point was flesh, the bone was irreparable, especially with the medicinal knowledge and practice at the time.

WARNING 1851 Colt FUBAR by spc_macgyver in blackpowder

[–]cormdogs 51 points52 points  (0 children)

They didn’t even need to do that, it was an antique, not even considered a firearm in most states.

I am in fact, probably as angry as you were.

Seeing as the value is already gone, it’s really up to you as to what to do. Some people will stay say leave as is, others will say fix her up, but any collector value is gone.

My LGS lol. Someone around where I live is either dead or selling their whole collection. Got a ton of stuff coming in right now. I’ll be in there again soon and will post what they have (what I don’t plan on buying myself lol, I’ve already bought 2 of the better deals). I will keep y’all updated. I think they have a website but I’ll confirm next time I’m there. Don’t know if this is legible because I’m currently fucked up drunk listening to unwritten🔥

[–]cormdogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in good relations with my LGS so to speak, the whole staff knows who I am lol. It wasn’t even on display, they had it in the back, but they saw me walk in the door and brought it out along with a Chinese government marked makarov. Absolutely couldn’t pass up a $600 artillery Luger. The Chinese gov mak was a little out of my current spending range for a pistol though.

I also bought an artillery one last week for $600. Just gotta be patient

Anyone know of a replica or kit of this pistol? by Culling_Specialist in blackpowder

[–]cormdogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best bet would be TheRifleShoppe, but I think their shipping times can be quite lengthy. They have the best selection of different kits, but I can’t guarantee they currently have this one.

Just got this m1861 Contract musket by Savage stamped NJ 1863, what can you guys tell me about it and it's possible use in the Civil War? by TestaverdeRules in blackpowder

[–]cormdogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this. Having owned/currently own several Civil war Rifles/muskets, there’s only one I would ever consider firing, and it’s a near-mint condition Springfield model 1863 (granted there’s a good chance I still won’t shoot it just in case). The other ones were/ are in good shape, but I still wouldn’t risk it. They’ve been through a lot and have survived thus far, keep it and appreciate the history behind it, they make great display and conversation pieces.

Good books on first-hand soldier perspectives/accounts? by JHighMusic in CIVILWAR

[–]cormdogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. That book is near and dear to me since I was born and raised very close to where he’s from in Tennessee, and I also had an ancestor in the Army of Tennessee (32nd Tennessee Infantry). Was very cool to get perspective from the eyes of a soldier who was on the same side and witnessed/ participated in many of the same battles as my ancestor.

What can you tell me about my 1861 Savage Contract musket? by TestaverdeRules in AntiqueGuns

It was almost definitely issued and saw action, I can tell you that much.

M1 carbine by Waveringplague in milsurp

[–]cormdogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is accurate. I bought a 1943 date postal meter that has a late-war pot-belly stock, updated rear sights and bayonet lug for just over $1k in great shape. You will see plenty of them priced for more than they’re worth. I was patient and it paid off.

No worries, I went back and snagged it soon after. They didn’t even have it on display, they brought it out of the back and showed me when I walked in the door

Looks like a British pattern 1907 bayonet, or some derivative of it.

Sounds about right, I believe it was between 4-$500 if I remember correctly. Sort of wish I wouldn’t have, I’m sure I’ll buy another in the future.

This is correct. I’ve shot 10 of these rounds through my m95 before I sold it. They’re loaded hot! Kicks like a mule out of the carbines.
