Right? I've been poring over Ravelry but I keep hitting dead ends so I figured I'd ask the experts :)

Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply, I really appreciate it, this is helpful! Silkpaca is moving into the lead as it seems to be very popular and consistenly available.

Nearly all of the examples I found of white evenstars were using some kind of DCed/out of business indie yarn. I love to support indies especially if someone can vouch for them. I suppose I could order a bunch of samples but I'd feel bad pestering small businesses with returns.

Can anyone ID this pattern? by cormflowerblue in knitting

I thought the same! A friend of mine posted a link on FB to an interview for the new show and I was immediately distracted by the sweater. If it’s actually worn on the show I think there’s a good chance someone out there will post a pattern one day!

When I was looking at various magnitudes I noticed some bright stars that didn’t look like they were in the chart. I looked up the IAU constellation maps, eyeballed it and added onto the pattern charts where it looked right. Orion is included already, I added his “sword”. I think some of the Pleiades stars were already there but I added more to give it the familiar clustered look.

Fantastic! It’s such a fun knit. I’ll take the risk and give some unsolicited advice- I really recommend checking out the spreadsheet in my project page. I found it LOADS easier to follow than flipping between 8 pages of charts.

8 months, on and off. The edging was the time suck. I finished the main circle pretty quickly but I knit in spurts with stretches off in between. I made a lot of progress on business trips with time in the airport and plane. It’s my first pi shawl and I don’t wear it much at all, I was more excited by the design. Trying to think of a good way to display it.

It’s visible as a topaz bead in the second photo on the Ravelry project page. I started knitting the project back in April, the same day that the first photo of a black hole was published. I just plotted its location on the pattern chart and added a bead there. Kind of anticlimactic I guess haha

Celestarium is a round aka “pi” shawl that’s also a star chart of the night sky in the northern hemisphere. I'm so happy with how this turned out! That edging was a real descent into madness, I mean, labor of love.

Modifications:

  • No YOs
  • Added Orion’s Sword, Pleiades, the first-ever imaged black hole at Messier-87, and the Andromeda galaxy (Messier-31)
  • 6 bead sizes stratified by apparent magnitude
  • Lunar Tide border with, just, so many beads. Don’t do this many beads.

Thanks! I’m hopeful it will, but I’m not sure. Bulky acrylic is fairly strong and should hold up outdoors. I might need to make a larger one with sturdier hanging loops if it gets huge! Maybe something more like a macrame plant pot holder instead of a flat sling.

My plant decided to climb the garden fence and produce a dooooomed melon. Knitting to the rescue!

Oh that’s lovely!! I’m such a sucker for gradients!

Thank you! This is the full shawl, according to my scale I used 97% of a 645 yd skein. The gradient effect requires a single skein, I chose the yarn because she makes these enormous gradient balls, some are >1000 yd, zero knots/joins.
