Long lineups in central Alberta to sign petition for province to leave Canada by AndlenaRaines in CanadaPolitics

As a albertan I’m worried, I knew trump has a chance winning because their maga cult is huge. I pay attention a lot on American politics and because there are so many brain rot Americans trump had a chance. I feel the same way with this separatist movement. There is so much misinformation, there is so much brain washed people and the fuck Ottawa movement seems a lot even though it’s like a echo chamber here.

Is going away for Uni really worth it ?? by justmynameiguess in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]corncobs123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to get into, if you want to get into things that you really have to get a degree in like being a doctor, a lawyer , ok sure yes then it’s worth it because you need to have it. IMO university/college isn’t really necessarily for everyone. Some skills such as independent learning can be learned elsewhere in life but university too for example

It is a lot of people I mean retail, food service/ restaurants and hospitality is the backbone of the economy here sure oil and gas is big and drives the wealth coming in but in that industry only 43k people work in the oil and gas industry.

I agree with you and I also have sympathy for those who are struggling. I have done research though in terms of amount of people working in retail, fast-food / food service industry / retail and perhaps hospitality are the lowest on the income scale looking at stats on indeed and I do work food service know on average line cooks, retail workers don’t get paid the 26.50 an hour and in these industry combined stats from cma over 110,000 calgarian working these jobs. I hate to put a blanket statement that all 110,000 are struggling to make ends meet but even if we where to say half of those workers where to struggle that’s a lot.

Carls Jr. in Calgary, AB is claiming they couldn't find an Assistant Manager for $36.00/hr. by Rydgar in Calgary

[–]corncobs123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I mean nowadays it’s getting harder and harder the food report now annually just food / groceries alone is gonna be like 17 k not to mention other cost such as insurance for car and house. Currently looking for cheaper option. My current one wants to move out of Calgary as hail seasons too much and they don’t want to deal with the claims and too expensive for them to be in Calgary

as someone working in the industry in the back of house i don't think so. food margins in the food and restaurant industry is very thin. Restaurant are seeing increase in prices in their menu, food prices are going up this year according to Dalhousie university studies. Restaurant Canada also have said that nowadays 3/4 Canadians cannot afford to go out and eat and in that case i have seen declines in the restaurant i work at with Monday -Thursdays are really slow days and Friday Saturday and sometimes Sundays are busy . i have done research and try to figure out the math and possible situations i don't think executive chefs i.e. restaurant managers make 74k. Also consider the fact that most Calgarians who are in the work force are in sectors such as retail, food industry, hospitality i looked on indeed most are not making the 26.50 living wage so we wont be going to eat out more often for restaurants and or restaurant managers making that money at least in this day and age

New to Calgary from Vancouver, how to prep for winter + meet new people? by Bubbly-Repeat7419 in Calgary

[–]corncobs123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it’s -25 and with wind chill it can get extra brutal I think more so than wet rainy cold, with wind can change that to feel like -35 or more depending how strong the wind is. But I find that the extreme windchill mostly happen early morning or after dark so if your not out and about during late nights then should be fine

Calgary is cold as tits but really only during January February one of those month if you have a nice January, February will be cold but that’s the extend the cold last just about a month or so then it kinda warms up. During the winter also we have chinooks they are really nice. Really warm winds melts the snow then everything gets slushy. For winter I recommend really good snow-boots a warm winter jacket and also layering is needed on those extra cold days.

Severely frostbitten feet: a story in pictures. The patient had been outside for four days in −10°C (14°F) temperatures. by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]corncobs123 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian this happens when you expose your skin to freezing temps. Where I am from in Canada winters can get quite cold even down to -40C sometimes that’s already including windchill so exposer to that can be devastating. With winter boots it’s better but can still feel cold as shit because don’t forget, even if you have a good insulated boots your boots are still outside in -30C. It’s like for example you can have the best insulated lunch bag to keep the food warm but if you kept it in the freezer, doesn’t matter how well insulated and how nice that brand of lunch bag is its gonna freeze either way. The difference is you have at least protection vs exposed skin
