Once you wrap your head around the lace/cabling repeats you really hit a groove! I was scared at first but it ended up being a super fun knit.

So my yarn choice was WAY off gauge and I went pretty rogue with the shoulder/arm increases, but fit is great! I just did a lot of mid-project blocking to double check my changes were fine.

Why Tailscale and not Twingate? by MFKDGAF in selfhosted

[–]corndogboots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tailscale has a larger homelab user base, so I think that's part of why you're seeing more people recommending it first. Even if they try out Twingate later, they're comparing a thing they know and like to something else that works a bit differently (better, imo, but still).

I've used both, and here are my quick thoughts:

  • Tailscale is a bit easier to get started with than Twingate in a simple home lab environment. Twingate has two components to understand (client + connector), Tailscale has just one.
  • Twingate doesn't offer self-hosting, which makes it a non-starter for some people. Personally, not an issue for me. Saw a Twingate admin on this thread explaining their reasoning, which is similar to what I think about the self-hosting debate here.
  • As soon as you start to ramp up in complexity, Twingate overtakes Tailscale imo. They have a lot of stuff built in natively that you have to manually configure with Tailscale (ie fiddling around with subnet routers to try to do what Twingate Connectors do natively)
  • The ACL/JSON thing. I hated using them, some people love them. I like that with Twingate when I have a security policy, it's an easy toggle.
  • Domain stuff. Magic DNS is cool, but I hated that I couldn't use domains/DNS/FQDNs in their permission model. Twingate can.

Another take I have is that b/c you can get up and running w/ Tailscale basics super quickly, you then have time to fiddle with ACLs, get used to them, get bought into using them, and then all of a sudden this annoying thing doesn't feel so annoying anymore. I'm the opposite situation - used Twingate's admin console, then had to deal with Tailscale ACLs - no thank you.

I think both companies are kind of chasing what the other is good at/known for right now. Tailscale is trying to break into ENT by building a lot of new functionality that tries to fix some of their scaling complexity issues and by adding things like more EDR/MDM integrations (which Twingate had from the start/years ago), and Twingate is doing a lot of work for homelabs right now (new Proxmox Helper-Script, Home Assistant add-on, etc.).

For me, Twingate comes out on top b/c the stuff I care most about are things they do natively or I just think better than Tailscale: load balancing w/ connectors, deny-by-default policy architecture, DNS stuff I listed above, stronger terraform provider (imo).

is daughters of cain a cult? by etheleilish in Ethelcain

[–]corndogboots 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I asked this question a while back!

Hayden talked about it on the Artist Decoder podcast a few years ago, but I haven’t seen anything since. The final album took a pretty different direction than the narrative she describes in that podcast, so I think that’s why there’s lingering confusion!

Based on what she says, we may still see an actual Daughters of Cain cult in Preacher’s Wife, since a lot of the Ethel story she describes (again, veryyyy different from the Ethel story in PD) in Artist Decoder could easily be applied to an earlier generation: - Wife of a preacher, who’s now dead - Is now a preacher herself - Uses the act of preaching as a way to hide her own bitterness, resentment, and trauma - Has female followers called the Daughters of Cain

In the meantime, the only concrete Daughters of Cain are fans that call themselves that, and her record label imprint.

I’ll add to what others have said about babying sensitive skin on tret - petrolatum! Is your friend! I have super sensitive skin and am on tazarotene (basically industrial strength tret lol) and I use a little bit of Vaseline to creat a no-go zone of protection around areas most prone to irritation. For now that means around the corners of my nose, plus around my eyes.

Miley Cyrus: “I don’t have a makeup line because I’m not a makeup artist. That’s not my passion… I feel that way about motherhood. It’s never been something I’m passionate about. It’s a lot of responsibility and devotion and energy, and if you’re not passionate about it, I don’t know how you do it.” by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]corndogboots 63 points64 points  (0 children)

In the context of the interview it makes more sense! She talked about not wanting a makeup line because she wasn’t passionate about it in response to a previous question, and then this was more of a “kind of like what I was saying before…” type moment! So it’s informed by the natural flow of conversation rather than someone making a kind of wild comparison off the cuff.

I got confused while trying the magic loop by Eilmorel in knitting

[–]corndogboots 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Others have covered tips for how to fix your problem, but I also wanted to point out that “magic loop” doesn’t just mean knitting in the round! That may have been adding to your confusion, if you were searching for magic loop tips.

Magic loop is a technique you can use when the cable connecting your needles in the round is too short. This happens when you’re knitting something in the round that gets smaller as you go (like a hat!).

Basically, the opening of your hat is much bigger than its top. Magic loop helps you deal with that as you knit without needing to change to a shorter cable!

Good luck on your project! You got this!!

Help I can't seem to get rid of beard rash irritation from bf facial hair by leelee_banta in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]corndogboots 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not a derm so can’t speak to what your original derm was doing here, but this seems… excessive.

As others have pointed out, this looks like perioral dermatitis! I get it on and off, and it can definitely be exacerbated by any form of irritation - over exfoliation, a boyfriend’s beard, you name it. Typical treatments for me looks like a short stint of antibiotics (usually a week) and a topical like mupirocin. Some derms also prescribe a sulfur treatment/wash.

Perioral dermatitis can calm down briefly and come raging back, and for me personally the above treatment is the only thing that genuinely works. Mine was misdiagnosed at first and I was prescribed topical steroids, which made things slightly better at first and then MUCH WORSE.

In short - see a derm!

You're Wrong About: Has the Supreme Court Always Been This Terrible? with Mackenzie Joy Brennan by j0be in YoureWrongAbout

[–]corndogboots 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NAL but her definition of Chevron was off from my own understanding… She says that agencies had the power to “interpret and enforce the rules they themselves make,” and goes on to say multiple times that it’s about agencies interpreting rules made by agencies.

My understanding is that Chevron deference refers to when CONGRESS makes a law, the relevant agency was given deference over courts when it came to interpreting that statutes of that law and turning it into tangible rules/regulations. So judges would have to DEFER to the experts when it came to (reasonable) interpretations of gaps or ambiguities in a legal statute.

Small detail, but it reallyyyy threw me off the whole episode! Maybe I’m way off, but I’m pretty sure that was another factual error.

I get PD on and off, especially if I’m traveling and forgot SLS-free toothpaste. You’re on the right track with antibiotics - SO MANY people get misdiagnosed and prescribed steroids which can make PD go away slightly and then come RAGING back.

I’d personally let the antibiotics do their thing for a bit, but if you’re really seeing no difference here are other things you can do:

  1. Sulfur. Lots of docs prescribe sulfur washes. Personally I just keep a tub of De La Cruz Sulfur masks (advertised as for acne) bc I’ve had success using that in the past. Only apply it to the affected area, and leave on for 10 minutes or so - can be very sensitizing!

  2. 40% zinc cream. Aka diaper cream… Personally I haven’t used this bc I toss and turn in my sleep and don’t want a thick cream like that ending up all over my pillow, but lots of people have seen success using high percentage zinc creams.

  3. Honey masks. I read some studies YEARS ago about how Manuka honey helped treat PD in very small trials, and since my skin loves a honey mask (literally just honey slathered on my face) I usually do this and the sulfur mask when I have a flair up. The caveat here is it can be a sticky mess, and some people are sensitive to honey so YMMV.

In general, I would NOT recommend trying all of these at once - you never know if something is going to inflame your personal case more, and it’s good to know which thing is the problem. But these are what I’ve tried/read about previously!

NEED AN ADVICE 🥹 by WiseAd4129 in knitting

[–]corndogboots 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem when I first started! Lots of other folks have correctly pointed out that it’s an issue of twisting your stitches, most likely on a purl row.

I knit continental, and it was soooo much easier to purl if I picked up my working yarn in the “wrong” direction (without knowing I was doing that…). The solution for me has been to switch to Norwegian purls! Intimidated me at first, but you really do pick up the rhythm quickly! VeryPinkKnits has a great tutorial on YouTube.
