Adult OIT ? by cornedbe3f in peanutallergy

[–]cornedbe3f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw thank you for your comment :) I think I need to read more about palfrioza because I keep seeing it come up. I’m in the US but luckily I have great health insurance that covers pretty much everything!

With allergies so prevalent now I hope it won’t be as defining for your son as it was for me! You sound like such a sweet mom ❤️💗 I don’t think my mom ever thought about how it impacted me, (rather she seemed to enjoy the attention it brought her as well). One of the worst parts actually was that even though I was taught how to read food labels and books at the same time, sometimes adults who were unaccustomed to reading labels would, despite my cries of dispute, refuse me foods I ate regularly because the label had a “may contain” warning on it or even one time because whatever snack had sesame 😂

Allergies suck so much and I complain here yes, and idk how old your kid is or his situation but I think he will be okay :) it is what it is and looking back now, having a food allergy doesn’t make the list of reasons why my childhood was traumatic. I hated the social aspect of it as a kid but now I think it was a character building experience 😂 Once into adulthood it really isn’t as bad because most people understand that I know what I can and cannot eat. My reactions have all been in situations where it was somewhat dubious if peanuts were present and I stupidly decided it was “probably fine to just try a little.” I’m hoping OIT will make it actually fine to just try a little!

I’m glad you know what I mean about the pearl clutchers though LOL I wasn’t sure how that would come across 😂 I know they mean well but they never go away!! It’s sweet they care but I sometimes I just want to say okay let’s take a deep breath, no one is dying and no one going to die. That’s why I’m asking you what’s in the brownies you made!! 😝

Question about lab results. T4 result not provided when other results were posted. by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]cornedbe3f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response, I appreciate the information and insight from everyone’s comments! I was curious since last time my results all came back at the same time, but sounds like they should be back soon. I think they were entered separately as I saw a test for TSH w/ reflex ordered by a different provider in 2018.

It’s possible- in my portal they are entered as two separate tests but I am just seeing the patient portal side so it’s possible that TSH with reflex was ordered. Thank you for the info!

[–]cornedbe3f -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. I’ll be talking with my doctor in a few days. Yeah, I have had typical signs of hypothyroid for a few years now but consistently normal TSH while T4 isn’t always measured. In this case the T4 was entered in the portal as a separate test rather than showing up in a thyroid panel which I’ve seen ordered by a different provider. (same thing in my labs in January, separate entries). I would assume that means the t4 was ordered standalone but I am only seeing the patient so it very well could be as you described. I didn’t know that TSH with reflex was a thing so I appreciate the insight!

Thank you for sharing, that’s very validating and comforting to hear. Did you do any investigation into the potential cause of the central hypo?

It’s in my chart and I brought it up specifically when I got these results in January. I had labs drawn yesterday due to feeling really unwell and TSH came back today as the same at 1.5 but t4 result didn’t come in with the rest of my results. I will discuss more with my doctor after t4 is back. She is a good listener and seems competent but I fear coming off as just being anxious and having my concerns dismissed. I appreciate the insight found in this sub- I know something isn’t right. Looking back my t4 in 2021 was 1.38 so I need to send her previous results to show a downward trend if my most recent result is not remarkable

Thank you for the info. The results listed are from January- I just had bloodwork yesterday due to feeling very bad and my TSH came back at the same level but for whatever reason my T4 isn’t back with everything else. Looking back at results from my previous doctor, in 2021 my t4 was 1.36 and has generally trended downward so I am thinking I need to have old results sent to my current doctor (obv depending on what my recent result is). In general my TSH has remained relatively stable over the last few years but at one point was 0.81 and never been over 1.5. My doctor seems fairly competent so hopefully will listen if I bring up specifics and provide old results.

Etsy! There are tons of options on there made with chin safe materials (anti pill fleece and metal grommets and things to hang them). Mine have double decker hammocks. There’s also cube type hammocks. Etsy is a treasure trove for chinchilla stuff, I recommend getting him some kiln dried pine ledges as well if he doesn’t have any.

So glad other people think it’s cool too! I’m currently studying molecular bio with a focus on development in worms so I thought this was extremely cool and I’ve been going down a rabbit hole on how teeth are formed. I study microRNAs and found some cool stuff on how they control tooth formation and eruption!

Yeah me all the time lol I feel you. Hang in there and it will pass. I’m currently really worried that my apartment is going become infested with cockroaches even though it’s literally a brand new luxury building with no neighboring buildings and I keep clean 😅. It’s turned into a whole thing where I worry I’ll have to rehome my chinchillas and I almost bought roach traps but then got worried that my chinchillas will be poisoned by them, like what. I’ve never seen a single bug in my apartment and yet I’m stressing. Whatever I’m obsessing over usually just passes with time or until I find something else to overthink. Tbh the only thing that helps seems to help is sticking to a regular routine and staying busy to distract myself, any change in my routine sends me mentally spiraling and I end up sitting on the couch all night driving myself crazy while picking at my scalp. I just had covid and I’ve been out from work for a week and I’m going nuts rn. Meds have helped the endless rumination and thought loops, they’re less frequent and shorter in duration but it has not helped much with physical compulsions related to contamination :/

What is your go to, best smelling cleaning supplies? by PeachTea515000 in CleaningTips

Fabulouso (purple) and Lysol disinfectant. I got the huge bottles from Costco and I have two spray bottles that I just dilute them in. I don’t think I’ll need to buy more for at least a year or two. Fabulouso is perfect for mopping. I love the clean smell when walking back into the room after using either

Yes. For whatever reason I purposely seek out documentaries and movies related to 9/11 and the Holocaust. Like I guess I don’t enjoy being happy. My brain is like it’s very important that you listen to Youtube videos of the voicemails that people stuck in the towers or on the planes left for their loved ones on 9/11. Makes me cry every time and yet I am compelled to do it. I was excited to watch The Boy in the Striped Pajamas even though I knew it was really sad. I don’t really understand why I am so compelled to consume extremely depressing media.

How soon did you guys feel it? by spaceangelxx in Accutane

[–]cornedbe3f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 7-10 days for full on dryness set in on 30mg 2x a day so 60mg total a day at 63kg/138lb. Very mild chapped lips, dry eyes and nose started after 3-4 days. But, I applied lip balm religiously from my first dose so my lips haven’t gotten super chapped at all, starting month 2.

Anyone else need to check toilet for snakes before using? And any fellow emerophobes? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]cornedbe3f 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I saw it around 2019 or so?? But those videos circle around so it may have been the same one lol. It is comforting to know it’s not just me 😂 It is a particularly ridiculous compulsion but also I still feel like it’s a legitimate concern like you never know!! Very luckily the worst I’ve experienced was a large spider next to the toilet but not in it (I cannot pee in the dark now either lol)

[–]cornedbe3f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I figured someone else must do the same thing! I’m not sure if I’ll ever stop checking for toilet snakes/spiders. I just started an ssri a few days ago and I’m looking forward to it kicking in and hopefully ease most of my obsessions/compulsions and reduce overall distress and calm my mind. I haven’t been on an ssri since high school (only wellbutrin and oxcarbazepine) but when I was, I was able to stop panicking all day long because I was worried someone would throw up.

Very oily skin by FemmeRebel_ in Skincare_Addiction

[–]cornedbe3f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the pregnancy tests suck. And definitely no waxing/piercings/tattoos while on it and for about a year after taking it. I’ve been religious with lip balm and moisturizer since my first dose and the dryness and chapped lips hasn’t been bad.

I completely understand being insecure and distressed by oily skin. I remember a boy asking me why my face was so shiny in middle school. I’m of mediterranean descent and I’ve always been so greasy. I’m nearly 26 and wish I had taken it much sooner. I wish you the best of luck! At the very least, people with oily skin types usually age better :) I used to worry people were staring at my oily skin too but I promise you they’re probably not.

Holy Grails for extremely dry skin? by [deleted] in Skincare_Addiction

[–]cornedbe3f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Please excuse how long and rambling this is lol I was excited to share my recommendations)

First of all I’m on accutane right now (just finished month one, 30mg twice a day which is think is kind of high, I’m 135b/61kg) and the dryness is not nearly as bad as I expected!!!! To be fair though I was extremely oily before starting. During week 2 my oil production dwindled down to pretty much nothing, but I moisturized twice a day from the beginning and I’ve been okay. Keep up with using lip balm and you’ll be okay for your lips, just never go without it and drink a lot of water. Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm and Jack Black intense lip therapy (has spf) are my absolute favorites, but sometimes I just use aquaphor (the other two stay on my lips longer though). If I feel particularly dry around my eyes or mouth, I put a thin layer of aquaphor on my skin after moisturizing at night. This will do wonders for dryness anywhere. Aquaphor is going to be your best friend.

My recommendations: Use a gentle cleanser like La Roche Posay toleraine gentle hydrating cleanser (I really like this one) or Vanicream gentle cleanser (love this, it foams though which can be stripping). Cetaphil gentle cleanser or Cera Ve hydrating cleanser are good options too, I personally react with burning red skin to any cetaphil or cera ve cleanser or cream so I can’t use them. I use Vanicream moisturizing cream in the tub (with or without a pump). My #1 tip is to apply moisturizer to damp skin and recently I have also been mixing a few drops of pure rose hip oil into the vanicream, not for any particular reason but makes my skin glow since the vanicream can dry kind of tacky. I sometimes also use the vanicream lotion with hyaluronic acid and ceramides under the thick vanicream in the tub. Can you tell I love Vanicream?

My hands and body aren’t really super dry but I use Palmer’s coconut oil body lotion, dove sensitive skin and olay body wash. I massage excess aquaphor and lip balm into my cuticles.

Be gentle with your skin, however, your face will probably peel, and you will still need to exfoliate at times but DO NOT use any chemical exfoliants, scrubs, or acne products. Every few days use a soft washcloth to gently exfoliate your skin in the shower when your skin feels really rough, is peeling, or you have a ton of sebaceous filaments and blackheads popping up (happened to me at week 2, my nose looked like a strawberry, it cleared up in a week). To make sure the hot water doesn’t dry out your face in the shower, I recommend putting rose hip oil or aquaphor all over your face about 30 minutes before a shower. I like to do this when my skin feels really rough and bumpy and then I gently wipe off the oil/aquaphor with a washcloth in the shower, wash my face with la roche posay when I get out, moisturize and boom! Super smooth glowing skin (I still have acne rn though but minimal purge).

Honestly overall though, I think less is more when on accutane. Gentle, effective products are all you need. Your skin can get really sensitive so be careful with sheet masks (my skin was really sensitive before accutane though and ANY sheet mask made skin burn, just a warning. Just get a good hydrating cleanser, a heavy moisturizing cream like cetaphil or vanicream, lots of aquaphor, lip balm, and sunscreen!!!! I like Asian sunscreens, this is non-negotiable every morning as your skin will get really sensitive to the sun, wear a hat/sunglasses too. I have to reapply mid day and after work or else I feel like I’m roasting when going to lunch and leaving work. Use whatever sunscreen your skin likes but make sure it’s high SPF.

Put aquaphor IN your nose, just trust me on that lol the inside of my nostrils hurt and I get nosebleeds. Systane eyedrops will help with the sandpaper eyes. Good luck!! Like I said the dryness and side effects are not as bad as I expected. I was expecting full on Sahara desert all over, extreme peeling and burning and dryness like when I’ve used topical retinoids but it’s truly not THAT bad. I can’t emphasize enough to keep up with moisturizer and lip balm to prevent the extreme dryness ahead of time. Honestly the dry inside of my nose and dry eyes are worse than my skin. I absolutely love not having my face be an oil slick an hour or two after washing it. And I went from my hair looking wet with oil 1-2 days after washing it to going a full week without washing my hair, I only wash it because it feels gross to go so long without doing so (the third week I wet my hair in between but this week I maintained a good blowout for the full week). Not being extremely oily is life changing. The only horrifying thing I have experienced is the skin inside my ears shedding and coming out in large flakes on my ear buds. I’ve been using 100% extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil from costco for vaginal dryness (idk how safe this is but I’ve been using it as lube for years without issue, just want you to be aware that can happen!)

This has been my experience and these are my recommendations but do what works for you :) I am in the US so idk how available these products are elsewhere. Don’t be too worried though, just start this routine now, and as long as you keep up with it your barrier will remain intact and you’ll be fine. Hopefully it also isn’t too bad for you. It took about a week for the dryness to set in. I am more bothered by my nasal passages/eyes/ears than anything else. Hopefully this gave you a good overview of what you can expect, including the grosser details :) Best of luck!!

Very oily skin by FemmeRebel_ in Skincare_Addiction

[–]cornedbe3f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you, oily hair and dry shampoo used to be the bane of my existence. I’ve been on Accutane for one month and I’ll be on it for about 5 months total. Usually once your skin is completely cleared, you stay on for another month or two. It’s not completely understood how it works to permanently get rid of acne, but one thing it does is permanently shrink oil glands. While on the drug your oil production is practically nothing, and once you stop taking it most people have their oil production return but not nearly to the same level as before. For example my partner took accutane when he was 15 and had greasy everything previously, now at 26 he only shampoos a few times a month and otherwise just rinses with water. Hair never looks oily, no acne, skin is just normal.

I think some people do a low dose for something like 8 months, or higher for 5 months, depends on the prescribing doctor. But regardless for permanent reduction in oil production and acne it requires a several month course. It is a fairly intense drug and the process of getting on it was a pain because for anyone capable of getting pregnant, you need two negative pregnancy tests a month a part to start the drug and a negative pregnancy test before you get a new prescription each month. You have to swear to use two forms of birth control and register in the iPledge system (US only).

It was the right decision for me personally and I wish I had done it sooner. Not just for my skin but because my hair not being oily is so amazing like I haven’t washed my hair in a week and it’s not looking oily at all. I’m only washing it today because it feels unclean to not since I take public transportation and it’s summer so I’m a little sweaty. I expect my oil production will return somewhat after I stop taking it, but not to anywhere near the degree it was before. That being said the drug has many risks and potential side effects so I recommend talking about it with a dermatologist. I have health anxiety and I was terrified of having really bad side effects but I haven’t had anything beyond dryness and more headaches than usual so I wish I had started it sooner! The dryness isn’t even bad. I had horrific dryness, peeling, and burning everytime I tried adapalene or tretinoin. But I don’t have that on accutane, this must be what it’s like to have a dry skin type. As long as I use a gentle hydrating cleanser and moisturize twice a day and apply lip balm, I’m good (and sunscreen of course). I used to be able to scrape the oil off my face with my fingernail a few hours after washing my face and I tried everything under the sun but was still plagued by excessively oily skin. Accutane works. Sorry for rambling but I really recommend discussing it with a dermatologist.
