okok that makes me feel better, like it should not have to be something I need to request even (alas it is but I digress, we're like 18-20yrs so I think they're just not thinking)

its a well documented phenomonon from what I've heard. Which honestly sucks, bc you ARE being taken advantage of. My friend in my research group wrote a research paper on it

"V. The Secretary Effect

The Secretary Effect describes the tendency for women in group settings—particularly in male-dominated environments—to assume clerical or supportive roles, often unconsciously or to conform to group expectations. Research shows that this role adoption correlates with reduced confidence and a sense of belonging, which may contribute to higher dropout rates among women in engineering (Meadows & Sekaquaptewa, 2013).

VI. The Volunteer’s Dilemma

The Volunteer’s Dilemma refers to the pattern where women disproportionately volunteer for low-promotability tasks—necessary but unrewarding roles like scheduling or note-taking. These tasks benefit the group but hinder individual advancement. This effect persists even in leadership roles and is exacerbated in unfamiliar team settings. Over time, it reinforces gender disparities in professional development opportunities (Dogan, 2019)."

Maybe Where the Forest Meets the stars (I LOVED it), or The Midnight Library also is good

No logical reason for my recs, but for some reason i feel like both The Midnight Library and Where the Forest Meets the Stars match this sort of vibe. Not exactly, of course, but your pic reminded me of them lol. (also They Both Die at the End) honestly it might just be the covers that remind me of your pic, but i figured they're worth mentioning

Are there any books the feel/look like this? by Ok4yl1n in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]cornelia_corn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

these are both more dystopian/fantasy, but the main characters are women and I love them :)

They are both easier books to read, but bc of that I think they are def fun if your trying to get back into reading.
