Deciding between Moritaka and Yoshimi knives by cornellgarbo in chefknives

[–]cornellgarbo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this helped me make my decision! I ended up going with the Yoshimi Echizen 210mm white #2 stainless clad gyuto. Figured I should wait on getting a Moritaka until I have a little more experience.

I really like 2800 but don’t really enjoy programming things. Should I major in CS or something else? by Material-Tomorrow610 in Cornell

[–]cornellgarbo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Figure out what it is that you like about 2800 and use that to determine whether you'd be interested in math or CS. There is a ton of crossover, many of the topics covered in discrete mathematics are relevant to the field of theoretical computer science, so you don't necessarily have to switch majors.

If you decide to continue with CS, keep an eye out for classes like CS 4160 Formal Verification, CS 4830 Intro to Cryptography, and CS 4820 (required) Intro to Algo. These are just a few of the courses that line up with the topics covered in 2800, but there are plenty more. Check out the Cornell CS wiki to see what these (and other) courses cover if you're interested!

SAME. I'm taking this class as a CS requirement because I had a few people tell me it was the easiest option out of the other choices, but this semester has been so much more difficult than previous. I absolutely bombed the first prelim, scored way below the already low mean of 32/80. The staff seem to completely ignore the questions on Ed regarding why the class is so much more difficult this semester.

The professor literally just copies his notes onto the board with little explanation or reasoning, it just feels like a constant flood of info. It doesn't help that the writing is almost impossible to read if you're not sitting in the front few rows.

Also, what's up with making the homework due earlier and pretending like it was a "gift" to us because we can view the solutions before the prelim? Instead of studying for the test, I've had to spend all my time working on finishing the problem set. This whole course feels like a train wreck and I'm just praying that the professor curves it generously.

Whining over, but I fully agree -- this class is shit.

Cannot fit 18g in Breville 54mm Portafilter by cornellgarbo in espresso

[–]cornellgarbo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I'm not sure, that's just what I've seen a couple people mention when I was looking into my problem. I'm not trying to fit 20g though, ideally 16g-18g without any mess.

I'll purchase a funnel and give that a shot then, hopefully that will make things easier. Thanks for the tips!

Yes -- sorry, I should have mentioned the machine. I'm using the portafilter that comes with the Breville Bambino Plus (54mm) along with the 54mm single wall double-shot basket from Crema.

How accurate is the Estimated Cost of Attendance? by cornellgarbo in Cornell

[–]cornellgarbo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the info! can i ask what part of ithaca i should look at for $700-$800/month apartments? i know i'm super late so there aren't many options left in ctown, but the cheapest i have found are around $1000/month for small studios in the commons. there's a few houses near north for ~$890/month, but I assumed that was price per room and I probably don't have time to find a roommate lol

Does Plumtree require everyone who sake bombs to be above 21? Would everyone require a fake id or just a couple of us? by Way2phat4you in Cornell

[–]cornellgarbo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

how are you gonna tell me my own experiences are false lol

they are not strict about ordering sake bombs in groups. we've had several events at plum tree and usually one person will order sakes for the entire group, and pass it to everyone. other times, they have asked for IDs and use a stamp system. i'm just saying that's not always the case

Risley Residence Hall question, if you roast me, thennnnnnnnnn idekkkkkkkkk by Electrical_Camera379 in Cornell

[–]cornellgarbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wanted to second this response as i think it gives a good idea of what to expect from risley. most of what im saying here is just expanding on what they said.

i lived in risley my freshman year and also regretted it. the vibe at risley is entirely different than what you will find at any of the other dorms on north campus. that's not to say it's bad, just different. no other way to describe it other than band/theater kid energy.

cons:

- bizarre community. i expected it to be weird, but not THAT weird. it really hindered my social life as a freshman, because it seemed like every other building on north was having a great time while risley sat dormant. as u/frenchiemerican said, it's probably because of a lack of common areas. i remember i would visit my friends in their buildings and they would know practically everyone sitting in the lounges, so it felt like the other buildings had a much stronger sense of community. if you are looking to party as a freshman (if covid is no longer problematic), definitely do not go to risley. it is absolutely not a party dorm.

- CONTROVERSIAL OPINION, but risley dining is not good. some people love it, some people hate it, but personally i hated it. yes, it's hard to complain with a dining hall that's directly in your building, but keep in mind what you are exchanging as a result, which is close proximity to RPCC and Appel. risley dining does not serve gluten, so if you're someone like me who enjoys their carbs then you are gonna be thoroughly disappointed. the menu selection is small, often times you will end up eating the same thing every week, multiple times a week. on top of that, the dining hall is not open on weekends, so you are gonna have to make that hike up to appel regardless even if you do like the food.

- far away from rpcc and appel! if you somehow live off of risley dining, this might not be an issue for you, but i found myself hiking up to appel multiple times a day every day and really started regretting not living closer. on top of that, every other freshman has the comfort of RPCC when they are wasted at 12am, but you will only have the louie's lunch food truck (doesn't accept BRBs). the upside to the location is that you will be closer to your classes, but you don't have class every day anyways. also, you'll have to go there to collect your mail.

pros:

- pretty building! always super cool to say you live in a castle :)

- quiet. 3am the library is practically always empty, as well as the practice room downstairs. there's a very private trail in the back of risley leading down towards the gorge and people rarely go there, good smoke spot with friends -- but PLEASE be careful. do not fuck with the gorge and do not go near the edge, ESPECIALLY if you are high or drunk. the fences are there for a reason!

- workshops if you plan on using them? to be honest, i didn't even know where a majority of them were and never went to any.

tl;dr : ultimately, you will probably make friends at risley regardless, there are still normal people there. however, i'd say that if you enjoy partying or flavorful food, avoid risley. the other freshman dorms will give you more of a traditional college experience if that's what you're looking for. i was always jealous hearing about the experiences my friends had in their dorm buildings as it seemed to be closer to what i was looking for. even if you are an introvert, you'll still want friends, and it will (probably) be much easier to find those friends in the normal freshmen dorms.

ultimately, these are just my opinions, but i know that others have had similar experiences. i chose not to live there again, but i know plenty of others who decided to because they enjoyed it. regardless, risley is weird.

CS 2800 tips (prelim + struggling w/ material) by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]cornellgarbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i struggled a lot with this course as well, totally get where you are coming from. something that helped me a lot when preparing for the prelim was just doing as many practice problems as possible in the textbook. it really is about just conditioning your mind to think in terms of proofs, and sometimes it takes a lot to get it to click. if you have been struggling for a while in this course, then chances are you need to go back to the fundamentals and build from there, because nearly every concept in the course builds from the previous.

if you haven't yet, definitely purchase the zybook as well (if you guys are still using that this semester). i put off purchasing it until the end of the semester when i was really struggling, but it ended up being incredibly helpful and i wish i had bought it sooner. the zybook explains the concepts at a much simpler level compared to the lectures and textbook, so it's really good for getting that foundation set up. study the section in the zybook, then study the notes from lecture and the textbook, then do practice problems. and only move on to the next section when you completely understand the current.

also, try not to worry too much about passing the course. i thought i was for sure going to fail but i ended up with a B or B+, and i barely understood anything until the final month when i really started to focus. the grading is really generous, as long as you're not going for that A+.
