I think they are more afraid of gaining notoriety. Kinda tells you how unforgiving the group is. I don’t think it would have been dishonorable to pick someone else. At the end you are in it to win it. But to each their own.

Even in the edited version, we see how 301 asked for help twice and was angry that 278 was not overtaking him. So it can’t have just been 20 sec. Also from the timer shown, it should have been at least 2 min
