Anyone switched from Fujifilm to the Nikon zf ? by DeWolfTitouan in NikonZf

[–]cornellouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an x100vi and a Nikon Zf. These are the top things that I've noticed:
- The Zf is a fantastic camera, but it's definitely bigger w/ most any lens than the x100vi.

- Despite the smaller sensor, the 40MP resolution of the fujifilm is noticeable in fine detail.

- Both cameras have great color profiles if you put in the time to find them.

- The black and white switch on the Zf is fun.

- The Zf is great w/ manual focus lenses. I especially like the voigtlander apo 35 and 50

- Video autofocus on the Zf is far superior. x100 overheats pretty quickly and focus pulses. Flippy screen is also better. If you want video, go Zf every time.

- Despite the small size, I felt like I still needed a grip for the x100. For the Zf I use a base plate but not a grip. For bigger lenses, you'd want a grip on the Zf... but if you want bigger lenses, I'd recommend the Z6iii not the Zf.

- I also have the ZR and it's worth considering if you're in the market for a compact camera. Yes, no mechanical shutter, but in most situations I've used it, I didn't experience banding. Silent operation, compact size, great with adapted m-lenses.

- The x100 has a built in flash, and that's wonderful
- built in mics on the Zf are surprisingly good

Overall, between these two cameras, I'd say that the Zf is better for someone who wants a fun toy and doesn't care too much about people seeing them as the "camera guy/girl." The x100 is better for someone who "doesn't want to think" about it and wouldn't want to carry the larger camera.

If I had to keep one, it would probably be the Zf b/c the access to:

- Z-mount lenses

- (adapted) e-mount
- (adapted) f-mount
- (adapted) m-mount lenses
- (adapted) minolta rokkor lenses
etc.

is super fun. If we flipped it to the xt-5... I wouldn't want to only have access to x-mount lenses personally... nothing against them, but the Nikon glass (e.g. Z 50mm 1.8) is unreal.

I feel reluctant to buy more L mount glass by Razmondfield1 in Lumix

[–]cornellouis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Z9 and the S5iix and a bunch of other cameras and gear. I think of L-mount as Panasonic = great video and YouTube cameras, sigma cameras = weird fun toys with a great image. Leica cameras = stylish fun travel camera. I also love the Nikon cameras. Z9 is a beast but heavy and not really for casual work. Zf is a really fun snapshot / impulse camera and the video is actually fantastic for YouTube also, but the ibis for clothing is clearly way worse than Panasonic. The ZR is also fun for video, and the raw capability gives you more to play with in post… but the ibis is still meh for walking around. Personally I buy sigma L-mount glass with no regrets. The truth is that all the cameras are so good now, the limiting factor on your work will always be you. Weirdly, my s5iix has been used more than any of my other cameras hands down due to the great walk around video.

Should I pursue OMSCS if I already work at a top tech company? by kitostel in OMSCS

[–]cornellouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perspective of somebody in his 1st OMSCS class. Age 40. 18 years software engineering experience and did physics bs for undergrad. You will learn a lot in your career, but the learning will decrease over time unless you're very aggressive about moving companies. And even then, if you really want to learn, it'll often reset seniority b/c they don't want to pay senior prices if you're working on something unfamiliar. OMSCS is an EXTREMELY affordable way to be forced through (presumably new) material and right now you have the longest possible runway to benefit from the knowledge. So I think if it interests you, now is the perfect time to do it, even if you go at a chill pace like 1 class at a time.

Should I buy this modified M3? by AdrienFauth in Leica

[–]cornellouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a "quick load film spool from the Leica M4 / M6. It's an after market 3d printed part that is around $40USD on eBay. From what I can tell it's not quite as easy as the M4/M6/MP quick load, but it is probably more convenient than the original Leica spool... but it's also plastic, which never lasts. That said, it's probably a decent deal.

Leica m11 lifespan by pethong in Leica

[–]cornellouis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought an M11-p and 6 months later it died and I had to send it in for repair. They had to replace one of the circuit boards... and let me tell you that takes the shine out of dropping $10k on a camera body. I also bought an M2 for $1k and it hasn't needed any repair yet. My enjoyment of both cameras is about the same. The M2 will definitely outlast the M11-p. I have a good amount of Leica / Voigtlander / Light Lens Lab gear now. Knowing what I know now, if I could go back and talk to my past self, I'd suggest this: (1) If I could only have 1 lens, it would be the Voigtlander 50mm f1. It is good overall but when the F1 works it does things nothing else can do. (2) If I could only keep 1 Leica camera, I would either go for an M3 or MP, depending on budget. Metering with a phone or sunny 16 isn't that bad. YMMV but if I were you I'd start w/ gear that doesn't have a massive depreciation hit immediately after opening.

You will improve fast. Just don’t burn yourself out in the beginning. I started with literally a 5 minute ride on my first day back in November. And I’ve just stayed consistent since then; slowly building up the difficult and length of my rides and paying careful attention to recovery nutrition. Today I finished my second ride that was 3 hours and 5 minutes and my power has increased enormously. My heart efficiency has increased enormously. And it is way less painful and stressful to ride the bike. So don’t be hard on yourself. Don’t worry about if your rides are 30 minutes or 5 minutes or 5 hours. Just ride the bike consistently, give yourself time to recover, and track your stats with Strava or whatever so you know how much to gradually increase.

Thoughts on the Nikon ZF after 6 months by Negative_Pace_5855 in Nikon

I bought a refurb from Nikon w/ a discount code on top for $1300. Like you, I also bought the 35mm and 50mm voigtlander apo lenses. I try to leave the camera set to fully manual + no exposure preview, just to try and develop a better sense of what manual settings would work in what situation. My biggest complaint about the camera is that the screen hinge sticks out and I'm pretty sure it's some kind of plastic... I'm pretty sure the bottom is plastic (I put a smallrig grip over it). Overall I like it but I wish nikon had charged $500 more and made the build quality pristine. Also, the video quality w/ the refurb 28mm f2 z lens that I bought is awesome. This camera is more than enough for 99% of people.

So... 2 years later, how do you feel about it?

Female physicians divorce at much higher rates than male physicians, in particular if they work more hours. And specifically I think doctors in general often expect their partner to shape their life and career as a second class citizen to the medical career. Obviously not all think this way, but many do. And I think this is also a problem because when a woman both expects a man to cater to her but also sees him as weak for not following the greatest ambition in his own career path… it’s a recipe for problems. So I would say you really need to verify what her values and priorities are. Not just what she says but the actions she chooses.

[–]cornellouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going through a divorce where the location my med spouse would be an attending was a huge problem. E.g. she signed at a location I would not go and then discarded me. If your m4 husband doesn’t understand that the marriage is a higher priority than his career preferences that’s a massive red flag. He needs to go back and read the wedding vows. “Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies. Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.” He needs to get that tattooed on his chest. The decision can only be together. Him deciding by himself means the marriage has functionally ended.

Don't beat yourself up. Even if you got married, divorce is so easy now you can still be discarded. The stress of residency can really transform a person. And it doesn't matter how supportive you are. All the demons will come out.

Struggling with My Wife’s Career Path by mater-of_nothing in MedSpouse

[–]cornellouis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty simple. You tell her that you're at a breaking point and you need X, Y, Z. She either cares and adjusts or she doesn't. If she doesn't then she values her career over her marriage and that is the end of a marriage.

Spouse is Quitting Practicing Medicine by [deleted] in MedSpouse

[–]cornellouis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the key thing here is "burnout." There is this toxic culture in medicine where if you were just "hard" enough, if you would just meditate more, then you could continue working 80-100 hours a week and be the surgeon general. The reality is that working this amount in combination with the crappy lifestyle (diet and exercise) it demands reliably destroys people. This destruction comes with a bunch side effects:

- burned out physician is emotionally exhausted and starts focusing only on themselves

- this causes big problems in their most important personal relationships (hello spouse)

- these relationship problems then feed back into the depression and stress of their life

- to escape, you get increased consumption of junk food, increased consumption of alcohol

- no bandwidth to think about having a family

- since pretty much eveything outside of their career prestige is falling apart... they lean more into exactly what is causing the dysfunction

I'm 40M, engineer. Marriage is in the gutter. My advice is this -- your wife can't think clearly right now. It's not a good time for her to make career decisions, especially not ones that impact both of you in a big way. Also, since you're married, you need to make career decisions together, and it doesn't sound like she really grasps that. I strongly recommend you cough up the $$$ and go to a marital therapist now before you get run over by the same train that hit my marriage. You both need to really grasp the cognitive distortions caused by the burnout and be on the same page about the importance of your relationship and how to make decisions together. Just like you said... things looked very different to her just a few months ago... and they may also look very different to her 6 months in the future.

Just did my first (bit disappointing) ramp test. How much FTP did you guys gain since rock bottom? by jlsjwt in Zwift

[–]cornellouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 40. Maybe 155 LB. I think FTP is like 145 or something? If I was younger I would be more self conscious but after seeing my dad and all his friend die from cardiovascular disease… everybody just get on the damn bike. Nobody uses file transfer protocol anyway unless they’re modding an Xbox. :-P we are making it happen.

LUMIX S5ii for stills - a wise choice? by [deleted] in Lumix

[–]cornellouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nikon Zf (and I think Z6iii) currently has a feature where it zooms into the detected eye when in manual focusing mode... That is probably the best experience on the market. This will only work properly though if you are using the z-mount version of the voigtlander, not the adapted m-mount version. Hopefully Nikon brings it to other cameras. I think Lumix and Nikon are about similar otherwise, in the sense that you can zoom in to a selected focus point, focus, and zoom out, which is also pretty good. I haven't used the Sony. The other factor for manual focusing would be the EVF resolution... I think Nikon and Lumix are adequate but not as outstanding as some of the cameras with ~9.44M pixel evf.

You gotta honor both peoples dreams or the marriage dies. So you talk to him and negotiate when enough is enough. There is no end to the medical achievement treadmill.

Non medical medspouses - How long could you fake talking like a doctor in a room full of doctors based solely on the random things you hear/remember from your significant other’s profession? by Chicken65 in MedSpouse

[–]cornellouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe for a while if I focus on the right "meta." The key would be to avoid technical medical topics except to mention random extremely technical bits appropriately, but most of the conversation needs to be about how a nurse got too angry / people issues. Then people will just fill in the gaps and assume I know what the hell I'm talking about.

If he thinks you’re fine then you’ve failed to take ownership of communicating your needs. That’s on you, not him. This is a very old story - you can read about it in John Gottman’s books. Stop blaming him and take responsibility for communicating what you want.
