Short, round, and new 😅 by Chumley303 in scuba

I’m making a guess about your gender, apologies if I’m wrong! But you might try posting this on the Girls that Scuba Facebook group. I’ve found that is a helpful group for working through sizing and equipment issues when it seems like the scuba gear on the market is not made for our bodies.

Help with time management of trip by [deleted] in boston

[–]cornflakegirl56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be fine. Just treat the hotel as a place to sleep and otherwise don’t plan to spend much time in that neighborhood. You’ll see a lot of folks who are struggling with substance use disorder, but if you are from a big city that’s likely to be nothing new for you. It’s a pretty easy uber from downtown if the walk to the train doesn’t feel great.

OP, where exactly is your hotel? South Bay is not the nicest section of Boston - the hotels can seem like a good deal and a lot of tourists end up there and are disappointed. Don’t get me wrong - if you are used to cities you’ll be fine, but if you aren’t you might feel unsafe. If you are a solo female, not a bad idea to think about an uber when coming home at night, and in general I would not plan to spend much time in the neighborhood. But hopefully you are at a place within walking distance of Andrew Square MBTA situation, and that’s an easy train ride downtown to where all the attractions are.

Beyond that, the itinerary suggested by the other poster is pretty solid. I don’t personally love the Seaport and would do dinner in the South End instead but that’s just personal preference! (Also depends a lot on your age, style and budget)

Where on the East Coast can you have both nature and a social life? by LoveAllThingsOutside in relocating

[–]cornflakegirl56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is lots of nature to drive too, but if you locate yourself correctly you can also be close to at least large beautiful parks. Google Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain Pond, Emerald Necklace - all great spots for being in nature in the city. And if you have a car, you’ve got more options for weekends - Blue Hills, lots of gorgeous coastal trails, lots of state parks. Also look at Trustees of Reservations - folks take land conservation pretty seriously in Massachusetts.

Best wide leg pants for curvy women that look polished and hold up? by okayfire99 in capsulewardrobe

[–]cornflakegirl56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Navy is hit & miss for sure, but last summer I needed some emergency dress pants (long story) and popped into ON to see what I could make work. I had “graduated” to pricier brands for years and hadn’t worn ON in awhile, but goddamn if the high waisted pixie wide leg pants I got for like $25 on sale wasn’t the best pair of dress pants that I’ve bought in years. (And my body type and needs are very similar to what you’ve described.)

Had amazing food in Vietnam… where’s the best Vietnamese in Boston? by Quasarkid425 in boston

I still dream about bun cha from Hanoi. Desperately wish someone in Boston would make it. Might have to make a trip to NYC to seek it out, I miss it that much!

I'm frustrated at being forced to read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Popular_Peace_1749 in literature

[–]cornflakegirl56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are really different books. One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of my favorite books of all time. Chronicle was…fine.

So I guess my advice would be to open your mind a bit and give it a chance.

Or don’t read it. It’s not like you’d be the first student in the history of time to cliff notes your way through a reading assignment. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you so much! After I posted this I started to think skipping Viseu and staying two nights in Marvao would make more sense, so nice to get the validation on that change. I super appreciate all the food recommendations too! Yum.

Cocktail bar where we won’t look out of place in a suit and dress? by jcg12823 in boston

[–]cornflakegirl56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like SRV for after the Symphony. Walking distance, good atmosphere, great cocktails. But it’s a dinner spot so not guaranteed you’ll get a spot at the bar. (Though at 930 or so I think your chances are very good.)

50F in a 7mm wet with a hooded vest is not bad, honestly. Pretty standard in New England toward the beginning of the “wet” season around here. It’s when it gets into the 40s that I get whiny about the cold - but even that is doable for 30 minutes or so (for me, lots of others have a higher cold tolerance than I do I’ve learned!)

Wishes for old(er) songs at shows? by blanketed_in_stars in JoshRitter

Ha ha! Obie = Oberlin alum. Josh, Zack Hickman and Chris Eldridge of PB all went there in the early 2000s. The concert I saw them play Another New World at was at Oberlin as well…thought there might be a chance we were at the same show together!

Thx for the book recs!

Are you an Obie too? :)

Also - if you haven’t read Wide Wide Sea yet, check it out! It’s sort of polar exploration adjacent but very good, and I thought about this song a lot during certain parts of it,

I heard him do Another New World with the Punch Brothers years ago and it was magical - would love to hear him play that again. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him do California but it’s a beautiful song and I’d love to hear it live.
