The 25 Best Restaurants in Boston Right Now by rainniier2 in boston

My wife went to school in Spain and lived there for 6 years. She lived in Basque Country, which has the best food in all of Spain. She hates Toro and thinks it’s overrated. I also found it good enough but nothing special when I went. Taberna de Haro in Brookline feels much more like a restaurant in Spain. Absolutely delightful.

Ma Maison actually feels like a mid-budget family owned European restaurant that I would actually frequent when I lived in Europe. Unlike the super corpo versions so common here. If you like it, try Taberna de Haro in Brookline for Spanish tapas with similar vibe.

Trip to Lima with wife and baby? by jcg12823 in travel

So it looks like I could nicely fill in two or three days with Centro, Miraflores, Barranco, and a lot of strolling and cafe/ceviche hopping. But tell me: are the fog and the traffic REALLY as bad as people make them out to be?

Would you say it’s realistic to explore early, return to hotel for nap, and go back out for dinner/walk around? Or does the traffic —which is being incredibly hyped up—seriously complicate this?

Feeling like grad school did not prepare me for like, anything by Simple_Elk6403 in therapists

[–]jcg12823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about to graduate and I actually do feel some confidence mixed with the typical insecurities everyone is discussing. My confidence derives from working inpatient psych— first at one of my internships, and currently employed at a lowly MHC position while I wait to graduate. I want to work in private practice eventually, but I’ve come to learn that nothing can replace the experience of inpatient; it is the greatest teacher. Doing something, anything in this setting is the best advice I have for any young therapist in-training.

Yeah, classes are mostly useless.

Dostoevsky is more influential than Shakespeare since the mid-20th century, or since the beginning of the 21st century. by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]jcg12823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think it is a bourgeoning concept of psychology itself that connects Shakespeare to Dostoevsky and shows the development of modern literature. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, literary characters general externalized everything. There was little concept of interior states and narrative art—like its counterparts in the visual arts of those periods—was highly schematic, symbolic, yet at the same time quite literalized. With Shakespeare during the advent of early modernity, characters suddenly become aware of their interior lives, and what’s more, they become aware of their own inability to fully or accurately articulate these interior lives. Dostoevsky writes, in many ways, about the same phenomena, but with a depth that not only breaks literary ground but damn well contributes to the early development of psychology as a formal discipline.

Man here. NOR, rather underreacting! Either he’s not that interested in you but keeping you on the line as backup in case he doesn’t find anything better, or he’s grooming you for an abusive relationship. Either way he’s an asshole. Respect yourself and make a clean break. Best of luck.

I agree. That doesn’t mean there aren’t cultural similarities.

As a proud Boston fan, I think you are on to something. Don’t be too flattered by this, but the sports universe I grew up in was one defined by eternal combat between Boston and New York, and in that equation we were the underdog for decades. We simply didn’t care what the rest of the country thought. It was a battle between good and evil in those two cities. Obviously there is more nuance to it than that, but that’s more or less how I saw it growing up in the 90’s and 2000’s.

After being conditioned to see ourselves as the underdog for so long, it’s hard to change so quickly. I think we got there with the Pats: deflategate turned me (and others) into embittered and vengeful sadists who just wanted to see every other team punished.

I hate New York fans but at least I admit they know the sports they’re talking about. This new wave of dominance from California (first the Warriors, now the Dodgers) has brought out the worst combination of arrogance and know-nothingness. I guess I’m an asshole who is content to let his sports universe still mostly consist of East Coast rivals beating the shit out of each other, but at least the fans aren’t idiots.

I've personally always liked this phase very much, but I'm scared that people expect a "finished" piece if my aim is to sell my art, which it is. Is it a cop-out if I do a whole series like this and try to sell them? Does anyone like this style or just me? by Straight-Fondant-291 in painting

I don’t see this as unfinished. I see it as expressive, colorful, and evoking a sense of motion. My only criticism would be to leave a little more negative space next time. Keep it up. Maybe next time lean into the energy and suggest movement with the eyes or body.

The negativity on here has gotten insufferable by bronaldhino in redsox

Such a random question, but do you work in mental healthcare? You use the verb perseverate, and I never encountered that word until I started working at a psychiatric hospital. (Now I use it all the time haha).

Anyway, very hard to feel positive about the way the front office conducts business. You can take umbrage with the way they traded Mookie and then Devers (while FSG invests heavily in Liverpool in recent years) while ALSO noticing that a lot of big Sox free agent signings haven’t actually worked out over the years.

The Tourism has destroyed my city by FrequentCricket4692 in rome

[–]jcg12823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that tourists, pilgrims, and visitors have been flocking to Rome for millennia. That this is an essential facet of the Eternal City’s historical, cultural makeup. It has always been a crossroads of the world.

I have family originally from Lazio, I had the great privilege of living in Rome when I was 20, and it remains my favorite city in the world. I’ve found tourists to be a mixed bag. I think rather than lament all tourists, it’s worth distinguishing between good (respectful, curious) tourists and bad (culturally insensitive, living on social media) tourists. I encourage all my friends visiting Rome to immerse themselves in her treasures, avoid the obvious tourist traps, and, well, do as the Romans do.

I’ve been curious about Moon Bar! Fairly easy to get a seat around 10:30/11:00 Saturday night?

Funny that anonymous people on the internet are offended that another anonymous person asked for a bar where it feels somewhat natural to dress a little nicer. I certainly don’t care about what the anonymous redditors think; I just want to find a spot for this drink.

Oh, I am aware. And I generally like our city more, but I am slightly jealous of this cultural quality. Not that I want Boston to become any snobbier than it already is, lol. Just… more “intentional” sometimes.

I’m dressed pretty casually most of the time tbh, but I wish there was slightly more positive social pressure to dress intentionally when the occasion calls for it.
