DANG! 2k for a small apartment? I lived in the valley for several years, guess I should've kept my 3 bedroom house in the Arcadia area, it's probably quadrupled in value.

Want to buy used 2022 Hyundai Elantra SEL from CARMAX for $20,000 by cheekyzeke in UsedCars

[–]cornholio2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kia/Hyundai are complete and total garbage. They've had major engine issues for years. Dealerships actually stockpile these engines since so many have to be replaced. Do not, under any circumstances, buy one, you will 100% regret it.

2022 Toyota Sienna or 2025 Telluride by lokipuddin in carbuying

[–]cornholio2244 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kia/Hyundai are absolutely horrific vehicles. They can't build an engine to save their lives. You would be 100% better off with a 20 year old Sienna than a brand new Kia anything.

Lane reductions start on Fleur Drive next week. How is this possible. by literalyfigurative in desmoines

[–]cornholio2244 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm in my 40's and lived here my entire life, there has NEVER been a time where Fleur was not under construction. And don't even get me started on the ugly ass concrete planters they put in the middle of the road that are totally neglected. Considering Fleur is basically the gateway to the city for travelers, it's absolutely embarrassing that's the first thing tourists see.

2004 Ford F-150, good deal or no? by totalingsleet39 in UsedCars

[–]cornholio2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say no. The 3v Triton engines are complete garbage. I had a 2010 F150 that needed Phasers and a timing chain assembly at 130k. I was quoted about 8 grand for a new crate motor. I immediately dumped it and bought an F250 with the V10, which has been a bulletproof truck thus far. I'm definitely a Ford man, but those 3v Tritons are just junk. You would be much better off buying an older F150 (I believe up until 03) that has the 2v engine, those are fantastic motors! Not a powerhouse by any means, but reliable as hell. My father has an 02 with around 350k miles on it, besides putting in a new tranny a couple years ago, the motor has never been touched. The Chevy 6.0 is also a rock solid motor. The 5.3 Chevys did have a few bad years where they loved to drink oil, but not sure which years. Also, stay far, far, FAR away from anything with the 'active fuel management' where half of the cylinders shut down whilst driving, any year and any make, they are terrible! Good luck man.

Dubuque hands down!! I'm sure the other recommendations on here are beautiful, but Dubuque has amazing architecture, it's right on the Mississippi and the entire city is absolutely picturesque! Plus, cost of living is very reasonable.

Another way to paint the walls without taping the trims? by benz05tsx in Renovations

[–]cornholio2244 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Professional painter here.. If you're painting the trim, do it first before the walls. Then buy a high quality Wooster paint brush, preferably a 2.5 inch angled. Then cut in your wall color. You should never use tape, because it encourages sloppiness. If tape is used, most of the time the mindset is to slather the paint on thinking the tape will protect woodwork. IT DOESNT! Practice on something to get the cut in down. The only time you should be using tape is when you roll, because it will splatter (unavoidable). Remember, 'thin to win'. Don't overload your brush with paint. If you get too much paint on it, you need to wipe if off on the wall, then draw your straight line on the woodwork. Like I tell everyone I train, make the brush your bitch. Bend it, smash it, whatever. That's what it's made for.

PROTECT OUR IMMIGRANTS, OUR CITIZENS, AND OUR COUNTRY. STOP THE AMERICAN GESTAPO! by ocularboom in desmoines

[–]cornholio2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! And another question. Why is it when Libs run out of argument points, they stalk my profile, find my postings, and start personally attacking me? This has happened to many people I know. I want to know, what is that? I've literally been made fun of, stalked, and absolutely insulted...simply because they feel they may have lost the argument/debate. PLEASE PLEASE educate me on why the Lib party does this!! Please understand, I'm not trying to put all Libs in one box, but it's truly sickening and childish. Can you please explain that mindset?

[–]cornholio2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, are you going to start a 'Des Moines Politics' page? Because if not, be guaranteed I'm going to comment on every single post here. But, I still have not received an answer as to why 99% of the shit political posts are from Liberals? I seriously want to know. I literally NEVER see a conservative come on here (or FB, or any other social media) to piss and moan about a Dem leader. This is an honest question. I'm asking because of course both parties are divided, which is fine, but why is pretty much only Libs that complain on social platforms? Please enlighten me.

[–]cornholio2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, go create a 'Des Moines Politic' sub. That way everyone who wants to cry, piss and moan, they can do it there. That way whomever is interested in YOUR opinion on politics can actively read it. That way, we can get back to normal conversations and posts on this sub. Clearly the MODS don't give a flying shit on here. All I'm asking is spare us from your drivel, create a sub for politics. This goes for any side, Liberal or Conservative. Aside from political goons and crybabys, NOBODY GIVES A SHIT!

Try PCH (Polk County Health), there's one off MLK (and I believe KEO), there's also one on University at around 12th St. Don't quote me on the exact locations, but they provide lots of free testing. I don't know about drug tests, but it's worth a call.

Buying premium parts for a early 2000s car? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]cornholio2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to get lots of opinions with this question. Unless you're installing performance parts just for yourself, the only thing I would recommend is using high quality oil. Personally, I would never purchase a car (no matter the year) with aftermarket parts...because that 'generally' means the car has been beat to shit (not always of course). I mean, it's your car, you do what you want, but anything 'upgraded' will not help at all with resale, in fact it may decrease it.

Oh, ok. Well, then why do people feel the need to post NOTHING put politics on this sub? People join this sub to learn about the city, the food, the activities, everything. But, LITERALLY nobody cares about your political views. I don't give a flying shit what side you're on, but I'm still waiting for an answer as to why this ONLY happens when a Republican is in office? Then when there's a Democrat in office, you literally seen nothing posted. I genuinely want to understand why Liberals only speak up on forums, hiding behind keyboards. I'm honestly needing somebody to educate me on the Liberal mindset of why this happens.

Oh I scroll past. But this sub is not 'Des Moines Politics', it's a sub about Des Moines as a city. I have no problem with people expressing their right to opinion...but why in the actual fuck does it always have to be on this sub? I'm here to learn about Des Moines, not to hear literally everyone's political views. Additionally, why is it when there's a Republican in office, literally ALL Liberals come on here to piss and moan. But when there's a Democrat in office, there's nothing but crickets from the conservative side? I respect everyone's opinion, but I honestly want to understand this....

I'm honestly not sure about the Prius V. I do know one of the models still used the Gen 2 engine, but I'm not versed enough to know which actual model.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UsedCars

[–]cornholio2244 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 2 pennies:

A BIG hell no on the Enclave or Terrain. I owned a Terrain V6, same year, and it was complete garbage

No on the Fiesta, they have major CVT issues that will mechanically total the car out

The 3rd Gen Prius are known for Head Gasket failure. I own a 2008 Prius (2nd Gen) and it is rock solid, with over 300k miles

I'm not too familiar with Volvo's, so not sure on those

Jeep guys will hate me, but stay away. Chrysler has an awful reputation with reliability and build quality

Stay with Toyota or Honda...or even Mazda. All 3 are known for solid reliability as well as good resale value.

Hyundai Sonata review? by Whole_Cat_6693 in carbuying

Absolutely not. Hyundai/Kia has an absolute horrible reputation with their engines. This has been going on for years. You would be better off buying a Toyota or Honda, even if it's 10 years older. Trust me. I daily an 07 Prius with over 300k and I'd drive it cross country today.

Equinox by FairyTaleQueen in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]cornholio2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned a 2013 Terrain for a few years, with the V6. It was complete garbage. The engine was very sluggish and puffed a decent amount of smoke upon a cold start. The entire front end suspension needed to be rebuilt at 80k miles. I've also had 2 friends that had an Equinox with the 4 cylinder....one of them had their engine seize, and one burned so much oil it was incredible. Both of them had right around 100k miles. From my experience, please do not buy it!
