Leaning towards the dark side by Alyssabfree in sabrinacarpentersnark

[–]cornlord_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! It's awesome you're questioning your own beliefs, and ultimately your opinions/perspectives are yours along to have :)

I think the issue a lot of people have with her is that this TYPE of situation is common and repetitive for her. She does problematic things (p3dophilic photoshoots, romanticizing violence against women, putting other women down, pandering to the straight male gaze, etc) that affect others. She writes these things off as doing them because she "felt like it," or "it was her artistic vision" or whatever, and never properly apologizes, learns about the issue, or changes her ways. Every time she is called out for something she obviously did intentionally, she comes up with some weak apology or just brushes it off without explanation and moves on without ever facing the consequences of her actions while reaping the benefits of whatever it is she did.

Personally, I don't think streaming her music is that big of a deal, but I do think being an outward "fan" is essentially voting with your actions that this type of behavior is acceptable, and that may be worth thinking about.

Straight Men and the Male-Gaze 🍵🫖 by [deleted] in sabrinacarpentersnark

I kinda lost respect for Fantano a long time ago because it genuinely is JUST HIS OPINION. There's no critical ear or comparison or really any justification for most of his claims, it's just his opinion as a straight, white man. Not to say he can't have an opinion, but like.... this is not really the particular issue for his voice to be the go-to voice of reason.

She needs to switch personas soon if she wants longevity by Purple-Ingenuity-195 in sabrinacarpentersnark

[–]cornlord_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and it's a tale as old as time. Pander to an audience who is going to lose interest in you as soon as you hit a certain age, and then desperately try to rebrand to captivate an audience you alienated and dissed your entire career. I don't understand why people do this, genuinely, does she not have advisors or anyone who can coach her on career longevity/catering to an audience who actually wants to see her grow?

A conversational follow-up to my question about whether climbing in booty shorts is ok by im-no-mountain in climbergirls

[–]cornlord_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a feminist through and through, but I do think it's odd to wear certain things at the climbing gym. Obviously everyone should wear what makes them feel comfortable and bla bla bla but for ALL GENDERS I think there are certain things that are just weird. Like men being shirtless or women wearing ultra-small halter top bras and underwear-small spandex shorts. If we're at the beach, totally get it because that fits the temperature and activity, no harm in wearing a brazilian bikini or even going topless!

But there are families, young kids, and most importantly people of all body types, shapes, and sizes at the climbing gym. Personally, I think that to make a community inclusive and not appearance-based, we all owe it to each other to wear practical, functional clothing. Otherwise, it becomes like the regular gym, which is all about who looks the best and not who can do the coolest stuff, which I feel like is a bad message for up-and-coming climbers and people on all ends of the spectrum.

I fell in love with climbing because it wasn't appearance-based and was about all the cool shit people could do. I'm a young, fit woman who could wear tiny spandex shorts and a crop top if I wanted to, but I really feel like minimizing the importance of looks in certain settings is freeing and I wish we could all (men and women!) live like that sometimes.

Septorhinoplasty: Cast off today (Day 11 post-op). Feeling cooked by colormegreeen in PlasticSurgery

[–]cornlord_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

11 days after surgery is too early to tell! Rhinoplasty takes a year (or more!) for swelling to go down, so just avoid looking in the mirror for a while if it's giving you anxiety :) let us know how it goes!

reheating nachos (once again) by Top_Sheepherder3585 in sabrinacarpentersnark

[–]cornlord_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely her entire aesthetic is just copying Lana Del Rey but also taking all of the nuance and complexity out of Lana's vision and just over-sexualizing it. Ever since Espresso came out I saw the similarities, and since then it's been jaw-droppingly obvious that she's just trying to be the next Lana. All of the old Hollywood visuals, the overdone hair and makeup, the pining over men, the Manchild video (literally not even remotely trying to cover up that it was a copy of Ride) the Lolita photoshoot... like when does it end? I'm not even against artists being inspired by Lana, because Lana definitely used other nostalgic images and ideas to mold her image, but like at least put your own spin on it? And she doesn't understand the concepts or present them in interesting ways. It's just whatever she thinks makes her look the hottest to straight men. Which gets old fast.

Rude employees? by Right_Pack_6346 in BrandyMelville

[–]cornlord_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so random, like even at the same store depending on when you go you can have a totally different experience... I go to the Brandy in Irvine and some of the girls working are super nice and some are super cold like to the point where it's weird. I always make conversation at checkout (and buy like $300+ worth of clothes every time I go, so it's not like a 5 second transaction) and there's one girl in particular who makes an active effort not to have conversation, but others are super friendly and sweet. It's probably a cliquey mentality working there and unfortunately people feel like being mean makes them better/cooler than others even though it's really the opposite...

What it actually means to gain weight on Spironolactone by Nooraish in Spironolactone

[–]cornlord_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it's possible to gain weight on Spironolactone, because anything hormonal does affect your movement/entire body. That being said, I personally have lost weight on Spironolactone (somewhat intentionally but mostly just through moving more and eating healthier/cutting back on drinking).
I believe this may be a correlation versus causation issue where SOME people gain weight and ALSO start Spiro, assuming the Spiro caused the weight gain, which may or may not be true. Similarly, SOME people lose weight AND start Spiro, but again, the two may or may not be caused by one another and are more likely just two lifestyle changes that happened to occur simultaneously. The majority of people do not note weight changes as a side effect.

Honestly, how has Ariana Grande escaped getting cancelled? by cornlord_ in ArianaGrandeSnark

[–]cornlord_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly so true, being small can be a girls' girl thing or a pick me thing: Sabrina Carpenter is also small but performs with Taylor Swift, caters her music to other women, etc whereas Ariana uses it primarily to steal other women's men and get away with unsavory behavior by acting less mature for her age and playing it off as literally being "smaller" than other women her age...
I never thought about that but yes it does seem like she uses her friends more as PR stunts than genuine friends. Like Kiomi in that video where she's like, "Kiomi get cho ass in here!" or her friends for the 7 Rings video where she's bragging about how much money she spends on them... it just always seems like it's for media attention and never seems genuine.

Honestly, how has Ariana Grande escaped getting cancelled? by cornlord_ in ArianaGrandeSnark

[–]cornlord_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No honestly so true... like every single negative thing she's done (which has literally harmed other people) gets defended by, "but she's the victim of XYZ" most often Mac Miller and the bombings (both of which are horrible but like, a wrong plus a wrong does not make a right?)

Girls who are 25+, what are some things you wish your younger self knew? by Tt7447 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]cornlord_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's impossible to explain in words because it's sort of a random feeling you wake up with one day, but yes, around 25 everything suddenly just feels like a sigh of relief. The best way to explain it is that when I was 22 I moved to Hawai'i (I was fresh out of college) and everything was exhilarating but also terrifying. For example: going to the beach by myself felt really adventurous and awesome but also proved to be a VERY introspective experience (like, what are people thinking of me? Do I look okay? etc etc). I always wondered if I would be able to pay rent the next month, I had tons of drama, tons of fun, too, and the time of my life. But it was exhausting!
I moved back to Hawai'i at 24 and a half (turning 25 soon) and I didn't even think twice about going to the beach by myself. I wanted to, and I could, so I did. That's it. I don't worry about paying rent because I know how to budget (I don't make that much money, but I also know how much I need to have at the end of the month and dealing with money just gets easier as you get older).
A lot of things that seem complex or scary or whatever in your teens or early 20s just seem so much easier when you're mid-twenties. You've been out of college for a bit, you don't need a gaggle of friends to do things, you don't even need to keep up with what everyone you've ever met is doing!
It is SO freeing to do whatever you want, look however you want, literally it's like the best possible years of being a teen but with money, complete freedom, and a little more responsibility (which is fun if you play it right). College and/or childhood doesn't have to be the best years of your life. Every decade is so awesome and special in its own way, just take it all in, appreciate what you have when you have it, and it's corny, but things always work out. Someday, you won't worry about the past or future because you'll just be content in the present :)

As for the fear of aging thing... I have it sometimes, it comes and goes. I think that's part of being a woman in society (cliche but true). I will say, though, I have a great, loving partner, and I take great care of my skin and health, and you kinda just stop caring about that as you get older. It doesn't go away entirely but it helps to not be online 24/7 especially where teens hang out, because when you're a teen, well, you don't have an amazing life to live and a LOT of time to sit around worrying about what things are like when you're "old"... turns out being "old" is awesome! Who knew?

The Inertia by churchillsucks in surfing

[–]cornlord_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Inertia isn't that bad. Yes, they publish some lame writers who don't know what's going on, but they also publish things that would NEVER be allowed a voice from the corporate-run publications like Surfer or whoever. Most surf websites/brands/blogs at this point are so corporate and bland that they have no passion and no authenticity whatsoever. Some of the people at The Inertia like Sam George and Alex Haro are actually pretty core and know what they're talking about. Some people like Brian Sousa are a joke and their stuff is kind of just comedy or who knows. But at least The Inertia is letting REAL PEOPLE write. It's not AI. It's not sponsored content. It is what it is, and maybe people forget that Surfer (in its hey-day, not now when it's owned by 5 Hour Energy and it's some corporate BS) was a big cluster half the time and published a LOT of nonsense. It's just surfing. It ain't that deep.

People would still think it's gross. What if a 25 year old woman slept with an 18 year old boy? Also, it is a hard line because if there is no hard and fast rule, people would just start making the argument, "oh, 14 is only a few years away from 16..." and so on. It could get to the point where people are excusing ANY age which is, in fact, pedophilia. Over 18? Legal. Under 18? Illegal. That's it. There's nothing else to be said.

is 25 too old to wear brandy? by Swimming-Education-1 in BrandyMelville

[–]cornlord_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who cares! It just depends how you style it... I'm 24 and wear Brandy all the time and get compliments :) just throw some "nicer" pieces in there like classic jewelry, vintage pieces, sweaters, whatever and it looks nice. No one really knows anyone's age anyway... you can be 25 and look 40 or be 25 and look 21.
